I have posted about this before, but I REALLY love the Pass the Pumpkin song/activity. This year, I came up with a new powerpoint for my first graders and I used it just this morning and am really happy with how well the students sang and played. One thing I love about this song is that it is "safe" for schools that do not celebrate Halloween; there is the word "spooky" but that is, technically, NOT a Halloween word. I hope you enjoy the slides below.. save each one and put into a ppt. or email me at [email protected] and I'll send you the pdf! The directions and song are on slide 2, slide 3 is a beat slide and then subsequent slides show the progression from iconic rhythms to actual notation. The final slides show what instruments play on the various parts of the song. Happy Fall!
Steady beat vs. no beat is a great concept for K-1st grade music. Combine children's literature, folk songs, and instruments in this lesson.

Ah, Fall... the leaves are changing colors, the air is getting cooler, the coffees are infused with pumpkin spice... It's a nice time of year. I'm linking up with my blog tribe to share some of my favorite fall lessons! I am lucky enough to teach in a school that is very pro-Halloween. We have a huge costume parade and every class throws a party. It's easily one of my favorite days of the school year. So I have lots of fun doing Halloween songs along with other seasonal songs this time of year. I'll share some great things I've found to do with each grade level... Pre-K Our Pre-K students just learned the letter "M" in their classroom, so I decided to reinforce that literacy component with a fun movement activity called, "Monsters Stomp Around the House." This is a piggyback song to the tune of, "The Ants Go Marching" which we are going to be learning later in the year. Now that they've heard the melody in this song, it should be more familiar to them when we get to it! Kindergarten I learned this song in college and love doing it with my primaries: To trace the melodic contour, I use foam leaves that I bought at a craft store a few years ago. You could also use scarves or paper cutouts for the same effect. 1st Grade Another favorite song that I learned in college is a piggyback song to the tune of "The Muffin Man." This one is called "The Pumpkin Child." Oh, do you know the pumpkin child? The pumpkin child, the pumpkin child! Do you know the pumpkin child Who goes to [ school name]? I start the lesson by telling my students a story of a day when a little pumpkin came to the school and he went to different teachers in the building and asked them if they knew the pumpkin child. Each time I mention a new teacher, we sing the song again. By the time I've finished the story, they've had at least six or seven repetitions of the song and can sing it independently. Then we play a beat passing game and pass a pumpkin around the circle. Whoever the pumpkin lands on is the pumpkin child! I let the pumpkin child pick a movement (pat, clap, snap, etc.) for us to use to keep the steady beat. 2nd Grade I LOVE the book "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" But do you know what I love even more than the book? This great video that has the story set to a song! I had my students sing along and then act out each part. After singing the song, I bring out the book and we add instruments for each part as well. 3rd-5th Grade For my intermediate students, I've found a couple of fun activities on Pinterest that I use... The kids love reading the notation for Ghost of John in this shape! And we sing it in a two or three part round. I'm excited to try this cup passing game next week. I also do a contest with The Addams Family Song... since music class is a place where we practice performing and stage presence, I challenge them to sing the song like Wednesday Addams: with a frown the whole time and NO SMILING. There is nothing funnier than watching a bunch of kids try their hardest NOT to smile!!! I hope you enjoy these Falloween (as my second graders called it) activities. Students in Kindergarten and First Grades listened to the song "Autumn Leaves" which is in a minor key. We responded to the music by moving back and forth to the beat like trees waving in the wind. Next we added "leaves" to our dramatization by holding scarves and moving to the flowing, minor melody. I love how the kiddos were so passionate and expressive!

Here's another Halloween song for you (surprise, surprise). This one I first taught during my practicum time with Cindy McCaskill in Boulder, CO. It can be found in Grace Nash's Holidays and Special Days book. (Grace Nash is very well known among Orff teachers. . .. some day I'd love to take a level.) Here it is: Verse 2: Halloween, Halloween, ghosts fly high. Halloween, Halloween, ghosts fly high. Goblins sit on fences, weating pumpkin pie. Halloween, Halloween, ooh, OH MY! To be honest, I actually forgot the second verse until I looked it up tonight. And Grace Nash has the last word of the first verse as "cats". Over the course of my teaching I accidentally changed it to bats. I do this with my 1st graders so I simplified the Orff part. In her book, Ms. Nash has a broken bordun, where as I have them play a straight bordun. I also have them add a triangle on the rests (as I'm using this to prepare rest right now.) Here's my Orff part: (The second line is the triangle and the third is a bass xylophone): Here's the slides of the PowerPoint that I use with this song: First, we sing it reading just the words of the song: Second, we sing it, keeping a steady beat and reading the words (aligned to the beats of the song): Third, we sing the song (text) while clapping the rhythm. I have replaced the text with iconic represtentation of the rhythm. As a class, we review that two small pumpkins on a beat are ti-ti and one big pumpkin on a beat is ta. We also talk about why there is a leaf (there is no sound on that beat). Next, we read the known rhythms of the song. Again, we talk about the leaf and how that is a beat of silence. We have not yet presented quarter rest so we leave the iconic notation there: Finally, after ta rest is presented, we revist this song and read it with the full rhythmic notation: I've got a "double-header" concert (4th and 5th grades) on Thursday, so we'll see if I can squeeze in another post before then. In the meantime, have a GREAT week everyone!
