I'm taking Mindy Lacefield's water color class and it's been sooo much fun! These are the mini faces I recently painted. I couldn't wait to turn these little faces into paper dolls.I cut out the faces and added them to some random paper dresses. The dolls just come to life when you add the body!
I want to paint something I've never painted before. I want to make bold brush strokes up against the meandering vulnerable line of charcoal. I want to make scribble marks from my 3 year old self. I long to listen and welcome fear only to squash it by pushing forward. I want to show up every day. I long to work and muddle and mess it up...only to bear witness to miracles. To discovery. Embracing fear...kissing it on the cheek goodbye. There is aliveness in moving paint. There is awakening and spirit energy. Dancing together with color. Creativity overcomes. It brings light where there was only darkness. Rainbow reflections in water. A simple morning Fleeting but sweet Child Spirit print

I am super thrilled to announce that I made the Prima Design Team!! I totally fell in love with their products when Finnabair introduced me to the watercolor pencils, oil pastels, and art alchemy paints. After working with the products on several projects, I knew that I wanted to try out for the team. I am honored and cannot wait to start creating more projects with their stunning products!! Thank you Prima! <
This past weekend I was in Santa Rosa, CA for the Art-Is-You retreat. I had the pleasure of taking two all day classes with one of my favorite artist, Mindy Lacefield. I was so excited to meet her in person (whose's from Arkansas) and be able to learn how she paints her adorable girls. Here's a couple of my favorite pieces I made from her classes... I painted the above girls in my really large journal (repurposed urban outfitters catalog). The picture above was painted by Mindy, it was our class sample - so beautiful and mysterious. Above, was my attempt of the same picture. Then below are a couple more interpretations of a simplicity girl. The picture below started primarily black. It was super challenging to create a face over a black surface, but I was happy with how it came out. I painted the pieces below on 12"x12" piece of water color paper, where we explored creating a fun - playful background. I wish I could have a dress like the one below. :-) Another girl painted in my large journal. Following are some pictures from the class... Mindy did a great job at explaining her techniques and sharing her favorite products. Below are some photos of other students' work... My friend, Lois's girls My friend Niley's girls Mindy is very tall or I'm just really short. :-) The two photos below are pieces that Mindy painted during our class - so Adorable! Mindy's piece - love it! My favorite painting that Mindy created - so Sweet! What a special weekend, Mindy is an amazing artist and was so generous in her supplies and her techniques...a wonderful teacher! Also, it was so fun to take the Saturday class with my sister, Lana and my friends Lois and Niley. A weekend I'll remember for a long time. And, I was thrilled to receive my complimentary issue of Somerset Studio today for having my altered bird houses published. I bought these wooden bird houses from Jo-Ann's for a $1 each. I was looking for more surfaces to paint my Paige dolls on. They all have my signature graphic dresses made with printed tissue paper. Thank you Somerset for publishing my bird houses - it's a wonderful issue of inspiring projects! And on a last note, I'm so excited for my daughter, Rachel, who got accepted to Stanford! She's a hard working, smart, creative and passionate individual whom I'm so proud of! Go Cardinals! Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the rest of your week!

I have been painting every day lately. Getting in the studio is sometimes tough. Maybe the desire wanes. Maybe I'm a bit lazy. But once I fill my water cup and sit down at my painting table, it starts. Not always does it come easy. In which case I make lots of silly scribbles with lots and lots of colored pencils. I really love the faber castell brand. They are a bit more sturdy. The lead is harder. thank you scribbles for allowing me to feel like a kid again and for giving me an outlet for not knowing what the heck to do. It is a start! I'm still practicing drawing primitive faces. I'm taking Mindy Lacefield's on-line course, Primitive Portraits and this week I've moved on to adding color. Now these girls have really popped. This one below is probably my favorite...I love the pink hair and dress! Mindy recommends using Peerless watercolors for some of the painting. I've never heard of them before, but they're so fun to use. The watercolor comes on pieces of paper. I ordered the Peerless basic and bonus pack and here's how I organized my watercolors... I cut the watercolor paper into 1" squares. I created an MS Word document, so that I could glue the color swatches in and printed the names in each square. I used a water brush and painted the sample colors next to each square. There's also a plastic sheet between the pages, so if the paint is wet, it won't mix with the paints on the opposite side. This little folder that I made is 7" x 5" and so thin, it makes it possible to take it everywhere. Below are pictures of the progression of one my dolls... And below are the dolls I painted this week in my 7"x5" sketch book. You'll see a theme to my dolls. I like to add vintage text paper, black and white striped paper and often use this Metro tissue paper that I bought from Mark and Graham. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet, but I think I'll use them to make greeting cards or use them in my art journals. I still have several more lessons to go, but I want to take my time and enjoy the learning...it's been so much fun! I even convinced my sister, Frances to give it a try...below is her adorable doll she painted. We reduced it by 50% and made cute little versions she can use for tags or cards. I hope you're enjoying this long three day weekend...I know I am!

It took me 4 years to paint like Raphael and a lifetime to paint like a child - Picasso It is so true. Children are true artists in every sense of the word. They don't question themselves and have such a raw quality to how they create. To get back to that place of creating like a child is my ultimate goal as an artist. I believe through working in a journal, the walls are a bit broken down. I feel more at ease with playing and not worrying about the outcome. If I find myself getting to tight, I reach for my favorite tool!! (more about this in class!) I will be your guide through this childlike play and give you some tools....literal and figurative to achieve a looseness and rawness just as kids do. I still struggle with staying loose, but it is where I want to be. I don't think there is any right or wrong way to create art or journal. It is about bringing a child-like mind to the table and playing for the sake of playing. It's about getting quiet and listening to what we need to journal about. It is healing for us. We don't have to carry around all that makes up our past....or present for that matter. We can come to the page and release what is there....whether it be negative or positive. To release is to give life to the positive and bury the negative. That is the beauty of art. It fixes. It saves. It is my realm of sanity. I'll give you lots of ideas and prompts to carry you through this journaling escape. Come with a child-like beginners mind and let's PLAY!! I've been jumping back into painting a bit more messy these last several days. I picked up a supply I have used in ages, the black marks all stabilo. It is not as forgiving as the graphite version but I love it's messy-ness and it's ability to really make the features pop. It is water soluble so you can activate with water and scrape with a No. 6 wedge. Intertwined - SOLD prints available upon request Patreon 4x4 rewards: I've been thinking of Halloween already and what lessons I want to do for my annual Halloween class. I'm still working it out and not quite sure of the exact direction. But I thought I'd start with this cute Vampire Mickey. I used the stabilo marks all in black as well as some acrylic ink and gouache. Garden house

Are you ready for some Elf Magic?! We will be drawing and sketching and painting with watercolors and acrylic paint. I have loved painting these cute big eyed girls and just had to share this process. I have had fun experimenting too with my new favorite watercolors... the kuretake japanese 48 color palette. If you are looking to transition from acrylic to watercolor or wanting to experiment with watercolor, you will have fun with these. They layer beautifully with awesome coverage but you can also thin them with water and they act more like a traditional watercolor. REGISTER HERE $39 I have a teaser video here : Here is another elf we will be creating:
