Let's Have a Lemonade Tasting (A Fun End of Year Experience) 8 comments End of Year, Freebies, Lemonade Day, Lemonade Tasting Today we had a Lemonade Tasting, and it was so much fun! I typically do several themed days at the end of the year. We've run out of curriculum, the kids are in summer mode, and it's an easy way to keep them engaged with meaningful learning up until the end. So, what goes into a lemonade tasting? Let's find out! As the students walked in to the room today, they were greeted with these pink and yellow ribbon streamers. To attach them to the door frame, I simply taped them with Scotch tape. Nothing fancy, I promise. Then, I taped a few lemon slice cut outs to the ends of a few pieces of the ribbon. You can grab the lemon cut outs HERE. We started the day by making new words from the words "cold lemonade." Some really great words they came up with include "noodle," "candle," and "melon." This got them ready for the next thing: the lemonade tasting! We headed outside to our courtyard where I served the students small portions of pink and yellow lemonade. Small, as in, those are bathroom sized cups. ;) To add a bit of novelty to this experience, I made drink tickets for the students to cash in when they grabbed their lemonade. This actually helped make sure the process remained orderly. As a student approached the table, he/she dropped his/her ticket in the provided bucket and then grabbed the matching drink. They loved their little tickets! After the tasting, we came inside and conducted a whole group poll to find out which flavor of lemonade was most popular. The students graphed the results and then answered some questions about their graph. I gave each student a wristband (card stock cut into strips and labeled "Team Pink" and "Team Yellow") to represent their favorite drink. This helped them to be consistent during the poll. Second graders sometimes forget their choice when participating in activities like this. Hehe. Plus, they thought it was pretty cool to sport their paper bracelet for the day. After graphing our favorite picks, the students brainstormed words to describe their favorite lemonade and then wrote opinion pieces about which lemonade they liked best. The opinion pieces were written in these super fun shape books. After all that sitting and writing, it was time to get up and move a bit! We played a game of I Spy. We used these lemonade themed money word problem task cards to review our problem solving (and money counting) skills. Finally, we practiced our parts of speech skills by completing this lemonade themed word sort. Some of the words really got them thinking and it was fun to hear them talk it out with their teaching buddies. The question of the day was whether they should put "drink" in the noun or verb category. It was so great to hear them think it out. Ultimately, they decided it went with the verbs so that each category would have an equal number of words. So logical! (But, for the record, I would have accepted its placement in either category). Our Lemonade Tasting was lots of fun! The kids absolutely loved it! Best of all, they were engaged in all of the activities and didn't even realize that they were still learning! I'd love to share some of our favorite owl stories with you today. This post contains some Amazon affiliate links. Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise by Sean Taylor is a lovely fun and engaging story. I loved the humour and subtle irony in the text and my son Sam adored the illustrations and gentle silliness of Hoot Owl. This book is perfect for introducing some basic figurative language. 'The night has a thousand eyes and two of them are mine', for example could be used perfectly as a mentor sentence and unpacked to understand metaphors. Owl Babies by Martin Waddell would be ideal to read accompanying a lesson on the comprehension strategy of making connections. This story is very relatable for most children who would be able to recount a time in their life when they missed their mother or someone else with whom they share a close bond. It would also provide an opportunity to introduce the skill of inferring. I noticed that Sam kept track of the details emerging on each page of the three little owls and how they gave clues to their personality, particularly Bill. He inferred from the illustrations and Bill's dialogue that he was the baby, or the more needy of the three and by the end of the story was anticipating or making predictions about him. Owl Bat Bat Owl by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick is a wordless story, providing opportunities for students to find meaning in the illustrations and perhaps tell the story themselves. I would suggest giving them plenty of time to study the pictures. A bat family arrives on the home branch of the owl family and at first it appears that things will not end well. Themes of friendship, acceptance and tolerance can be explored. Flip the book upside down to consider things from a different perspective too! Sam and the Firefly by P.D Eastman was perfect for us this week. Of course Sam loves that his name is featured in this story but he has become so confident in his reading that he was able to read this one to me (cue huge big fat mumma tears). There were lots of sight words to reinforce and rhyming words to encounter while still uncovering quite an entertaining story. Sam the owl longs for a friend and he finds Gus the firefly. Antics ensue, which are appealing to little ones like my Sam who is beginning to be very interested in writing words, playing tricks and making new friends. Reading this story provides opportunities to stop and discuss friendship and how the actions of each character impact their relationship. Sam the owl enjoys the tricks of Gus initially but soon notices that Gus' behaviour is worrisome. He shows admirable friendship qualities by: encouraging his friend to have fun, but to do the right thing telling Gus the truth - 'Stop your tricks', 'Stop, Gus! Stop!' standing by Gus and being loyal - 'Sam was there too' encouraging him to do the right thing and use his talents in a positive way forgiving him and reestablishing the friendship after a disagreement All of these qualities can be discussed and related to personal experiences of the children in your class too. Make an anchor chart of qualities of a good friend and some behaviours that good friends demonstrate. Ask some of your students to role play how these look and sound to an observer. Talk about strategies for friendship when things are not always happy and positive. Friendship is a complex and at times abstract concept for little ones to understand. Remind them that sometimes friendship is 'up' and sometimes it is 'down' and that this is very normal. I've prepared a worksheet that you can use following on from a story about friendship. Ask your students to draw or write 4 things they can do as a good friend. Hey everyone! So as I've been prepping for my classroom this summer-- I've absolutely fallen in love with succulents! Not the cacti type-- but the fat, round, and colorful type. As a result every piece of decor I've been making lately has a shiplap and succulent theme! Take a look below: Most of the items pictured above can be found in my TPT store-- you can find them by clicking here. Now on to to the real reason you're here. Paper succulents. I'm not going to lie to you-- it is time consuming. And if you have a cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette-- you can save yourself some serious time (plus you can make larger sized plants). So here we go! Here are the supplies you need: Cardstock (I bought 2 packs of green cardstock from Walmart for $5 each), scissors, pencil (if tracing), and hot glue. Each larger succulent took about three 12x12 pieces of cardstock, and the smaller ones took two 8.5x11" pieces. This first succulent was made from a template I found online for free. I didn't really follow their directions-- so you can make them either way. First, I printed the 2 pages onto the color of cardstock I wanted. Next, I cut out the pieces. I laid the largest piece aside as a base. Next, I cut all the other pieces in half (and I also cut an extra piece of the smallest size). Cutting them in half let me make a small slit along the bottom-- where I used a small dot of hot glue to press the flaps together (giving them more of a standing look). You can see my process below... After that I began assembling my succulent: I tried to make sure the petals were overlapping in each layer as I glued the pieces together. The very middle is the hardest to explain because I usually played it by ear-- bending and gluing the smallest pieces (sometimes even trimming them) until I was satisfied. Succulents 2 & 3 were created using my Cricut-- but I was able to trace a template for any lovers of the "trace and cut" method. If you want to make them larger-- you could always set the largest piece down on some paper and trace a larger figure around it. Basically for succulent #2, I used the largest piece as the base and bent all the other pieces upward at the petals. Then you glue and stack, glue and stack-- and make sure the petals alternate (so you should see the previous layer in between). Here is my finished result with my original: The last succulent is my personal favorite! Also the easiest (in my opinion). It's the same process as above: Cut out shapes, bend the petals, and stack and glue the layers.
