If you’re heading into the backcountry, a compass is one of the most essential pieces of gear you can bring. A map is virtually useless without a compass to indicate where north is. While a GPS for hiking may have its uses, it’s not smart to rely only on that. The battery can get exhausted and without map and compass skills, you can be left stranded. How to read a compass, along with knowing how to read a topographic map, is among the most important survival skills. THE BASIC PARTS OF A COMPASS There are many different types of compasses on the market

Have you seen The Lorax yet??? Seriously, one of the best movies I've seen in a while. So so cute. I didn't know I could tear up about trees, but it happened. And I may or may not have laughed out loud at a few parts by myself, but that's pretty much normal for me in a movie theater. My little babe is turning 3 this month and has now requested a Lorax themed birthday party so my party planning wheels are a turnin' fast! Back to business.... here's a little treat for ya. Click on the pic to download. Are you sick of seeing these 3-D shapes?!? Ha! I can't promise it won't be the last cause I do have a little extra time on my hands this week. Thank heavens for spring break!!!! :)
Critical thinking skills are an absolutely essential part of of learning. This is an often overlooked skill that is set aside in favor of skills that are more measurable like reading and math. But critical thinking skills build a strong foundation for all other skills. Being able to work out the details of a math problem or decode a word both rely on critical thinking. Taking apart the pieces of a problem and put them together into something that works is what critical thinking is all about. Today, I want to share with you how we've been working on building critical thinking skills through sorting buttons. A simple activity, with a lot of great ways to analyze!

Build essential critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills with this dinosaur themed logic pack, which includes: 6 Directional Mapping Puzzles Following controlled vocabulary prompts, students move up, down, left, and right through a 3x3 or 4x4 grid to discover where they’ll land on the grid. 5 Visual Rotation Puzzles Focusing on mental flexibility and being able to mentally rotate objects, students are challenged to discover which one of three dinosaur pictures is like the prompt. 8 Verbal Analogies Using prior knowledge about characteristics of basic dinosaurs, students build verbal connections between concepts. You can adapt this activity by presenting it orally to non-fluent reading children. 4 Table Logic Puzzles Ending your unit with these table logic puzzles allows your students to show off their acquired knowledge while you build in deductive reasoning skills. Pre-read the puzzles to be certain you cover certain basic facts about different dinosaurs. For example, students will need to know that Stegosaurus used its tail to defend itself and Apatosaurus had a long neck. The puzzles increase in difficulty, moving from 3x3 to 5x5 tables that must be sorted by facts. Use these worksheets as whole class or small group activities or incorporate them in take-home packets. They're perfect for early finishers and enrichment for your GT early elementary students who need an extra challenge.

“I have, Who Has” is a great whole class activity to review what has been learned in class. It is a looping activity, which means that the review involves each person around the classroom until each student receives a card. It begins with a student asking the question and another student answering. The questions and answers rotate/loop around the room until it reaches a student with the final card. To make it fun and more competitive, I time my classes and have my Pre-AP classes compete against each other & my On-Level classes compete against each other. The class with the lowest time receives an award. This activity is great to review content in that it incorporates reading, speaking, and listening, which are all essential to learning. About the Book Learn to master essential volleyball skills such as serving, receiving, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging. With this book's coverage of scoring systems, rules, rotations, and common tactics, it's never been easier to teach or learn the game. Book Synopsis Learning to play volleyball has never been more effective--or more fun--than with Volleyball Fundamentals, Second Edition. Parents, coaches, and instructors of volleyball skill courses will immediately benefit from the solid foundational information and practical tips on how to teach every aspect of the sport. Players will enjoy using this resource because they will learn by doing--spending less time reading and more time engaged in playing the game. Volleyball Fundamentals begins by teaching the basics that get players ready to take the court. The book covers positioning and the importance of reading the opposing players, communicating with teammates, and preparing for movement on the court. The guidance on formations and rotations will help students get an immediate sense of where they belong on the court. Clear instructions, accompanied by illustrations, for drills help players master specific skills such as serving, receiving a serve, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging. Each skill is introduced through a simple four-step sequence: - You Can Do It: The skill is introduced with sequential instructions and accompanying photographs. - More to Choose and Use: Variations and extensions of the primary skill are covered. - Take It to the Court: Readers learn how to apply the skill in game play. - Give It a Go: These sections provide direct experiences--such as drills, small-sided games, and six-versus-six gamelike activities--for the reader to use to gauge, develop, and hone the skill. Throughout the book, teaching cues offer advice for avoiding common mistakes. New to this edition is a chapter on how to effectively use the libero position (defensive specialist) in game play. Sections on offensive and defensive tactics, scoring systems, rules, and modified games have also been updated to make the game as easy for you to teach as it is for your students to learn. As part of the Sports Fundamentals Series, Volleyball Fundamentals will help you teach the basic skills and tactics of the game so that your players can compete on the court in no time at all.
