This comprehensive guide presents nearly 500 sayings, each drawn from various elements of the natural world and tied to human experiences, events, or contexts. The dual-language layout, with texts in both Māori and English, makes it accessible to learners and fluent speakers alike. Divided into thematic sections like birds, body parts, and animals, this book not only teaches the sayings but also explores their meanings, uses, and cultural significance. The title, inspired by the proverb "The words are small, yet their meanings are substantial," highlights the profound impact these sayings have in the Māori cultural landscape. I LOVE saving figurative language until June - it's such a fun language unit ... and perfect for our "dreaming of summer brains". We finished up our EQAO testing mid week, and this onomatopoeia activity was the perfect break from testing. How fun is that??? Students chose two contrasting colours - one for the background and one for the word and border "bursting out of the page". They also needed newspaper (cut just a fraction smaller that the "bursting out of the page border" and glued the newspaper on top. They glued their word on top of that (we had brainstormed a lot of onomatopoeia words, but for some reason most of them chose SPLAT for their word). I also had them do a little shading under their letters for that little extra POP (see, I know some onomatopoeia words, too). ;) I had seen this awesome idea on Pinterest and followed it back to Artisan des Arts. Her examples are FANTASTIC!! We also wrote simile poems this week. I found a little template HERE for the students to use for their rough copies. When students were finished their templates, I had them write out their good copies, and illustrate a few lines with a small image. I hung these up, too ... LOVING our bulletin board switch up ... even this late in the school year!!! (I have two of these "smART class" bulletin boards side by side in the classroom. 15 more school days left ... I think I can ... I think I can ... Happy Friday!!!

Poetry is the genre of open literature . The amount of tools, techniques and styles are amazing. However, knowing when and how to use these elements are essential for writing and understanding of poetry in its best points simile poems. One of the most popular techniques used in poetry, is the comparison . The comparison is easier to describe the use of the word "like " or "as " to compare specific objects , people or things to others. This contributes not only to the imagination , but also helps the reader understand what it feels like something that looks , sounds , or do at any time simile poems. An example of a comparison can be seen in much of the poetry of Emily Dickinson . Let's take a look at his poem "The Mountain" The seasons prayed around his knees , As children around a parent Grandfather of the time it is, Since the dawn of the ancestor . This poem is Emily Dickinson acerca Nature - mountains to be more specific. To enhance the reader's mind on the subject to help you understand the true nature of the mountain, using a metaphor of an elder. Comparing " like children around a father " comes into play to help them use the comparison. This helps the reader visualize elevation changes that occur during the season. The comparison is really an amazing tool simile poems. Can be used as a way for readers to relate better to a person, place or thing. When used in a metaphor more like Emily Dickinson "The Mountain" , a comparison is gaining more strength simile poems. Use it wisely , though. A great tool should never be taken for granted simile poems.
A quick little recap of our week... On Monday, we had an author come visit to read and autograph books. I'll post about that book (along with a freebie) on Monday for my Must-Read Monday linky, but I'll give you a little clue... This week was kind of a blur...it went by super quickly, but hey, I'm not complaining....SIX more weeks! We still have a LOT to squeeze in though, so it's no surprise that we are hitting multiple standards with each activity we do. In this activity, we hit identifying properties of solids, using adjectives to describe, partitioning rectangles into rows and columns, and writing similes. Whew! They rocked it, though! Speaking of similes, we're preparing for our poetry picnic celebration and created our Simile Sandwiches. These are always one of my favorite displays...and they're similes for each layer of the sandwich were AMAZING! Be.still.my.heart. These are a part of our best-selling Poetry Pizzazz unit. We also wrote "sandwich poems" as one of our displays for this unit. I love that students have the choice of using syllabication or rhyming to write these poems. And, we had some very creative ants! Since we just finished our Economics unit, we're holding our "Madden's Marketplace" on Monday. As usual, I combine a lot of skills with this unit celebration, and I'm working on a new product for it....I have students become producers as they create a good from paper to sell at our market. They have to write persuasive commercials to convince consumers to buy their products. Then, they become consumers! Well, there's a lot more to it, but you get the idea! Today students started bringing in their products and they were AMAZING! So, so creative... More on our Marketplace next week!

Last week we covered similes. Just wanted to share a few pictures and ideas for teaching this skill. First we watched this video and the kids LOVED it! It has a catchy little tune and it uses drawings and simile examples from kids their age. After it was over we talked about the ones they remembered and I told them they would draw one of their own. As they worked we listened to it again. One, because they begged me to but two because I wanted the ones that couldn't come up with anything to get some ideas by listening again. Here are some of their drawings. {Big as a house and hungry as a wolf} The next day I let them make these flowers out of scrap paper. They had to draw their face in the middle and come up with four similes that described them. Don't you just love the side bangs?!?! We, of course, used Amy Lemons simile packet that you can find for free {HERE}. It has a flap book, sort, and more. If you are going to be covering similes in December I recently found these free Christmas themed task cards. Click {HERE} to check them out. Super cute! Happy Monday and two-day week {for me at least}!!
