If you're on Pinterest, chances are good you've seen this activity. But for the few who haven't, get ready for some seriously cheap science fun. We made a hovercraft! Supplies An old CD that you no longer need Glue gun and glue sticks thumbtack soda bottle screw top (you want one that's fairly deep) latex party balloon Assembly Poke several holes in the plastic bottle top with the thumbtack. Use a hot glue gun (Adults, please. No children. Those things are H-O-T) to apply a bead of glue to the edge of the bottle top and glue it to the center of the CD, over the hole. If necessary, apply a bead of glue around the cap to make sure it's totally secure. You're almost done. Now blow up the balloon. Twist the neck of the balloon to keep it inflated and pull the lip of the balloon over the edges of the bottle cap. Ask your child to make predictions. Before we released the hovercraft, my son thought it would glide through the air more like a hot air balloon. Let it Go Set on a flat surface like a countertop or wood floor. Release the balloon and watch it glide along without any effort just over the surface. Invite the child to form a hypothesis about why and how this works. How it WorksThe force of the air that exits the balloon as it deflates goes through the holes in the bottle cap, pushes against the surface (floor or counter), and creates a cushion of air over which the CD glides freely.

We're supposed to have sun for the rest of the week, but it's never good to take chances with the weather. So, when the sun came out today, we hit the ground running with three solar thermal projects at once. This time, instead of working with complicated, photovoltaic, solar panels, we experimented with harnessing the heat of the sun to expand air, purify water, and turn a pinwheel. Each project was simple to put together, and provided easily observable results, but with lots of little details that could be tweaked, adjusted, or expanded. Really I had a hard time deciding which one to write about first, finally settling on the simple solar chimney, or updraft tower we found archived on the National Research Counsel Canada website. The chimney is made by taping together three, large, empty, clean tin cans, with the tops and bottoms removed. A wire arch (made from an unbent paper clip) is taped across the opening of the top can... ...with a thumbtack, or straight pin, taped to the center of the arch, pointing up. The chimney is placed on top of a couple of books, to allow air to flow in from underneath. Finally a pinwheel - made by cutting diagonally in from the corners of a 6 inch square sheet of paper, to within a quarter inch of the center, bending the every other point from the corners to the center, and taping them in place... ...is balanced on top of the thumbtack, taped side down. When placed in the sunlight, the heat from the sun will warm the air inside the cans, creating a convective updraft, and spinning the pinwheel. Questions for thought: What would happen if the tower was not on the books? Would a paper tower work in place of cans? Would pinwheels made of different materials, or in different sizes spin faster? What if the tower was painted black? Could enough power be generated by the spinning pinwheel to turn a generator?

Inspired by my previous post, I have created a series of 6 doodle sheets that are free to download. I have produced them at A5 size (though they could be made smaller or larger if you choose) and they can either be printed off and used as they come, or trimmed and laminated to make re-usable doodle sheets, as illustrated here. If laminated, they should be used with special dry-wipe pens to allow them to be wiped clean. I also punched a hole in the corner of each sheet and tied them together using a keyring so that I could carry them about more easily. You are free to use these however you choose (except commercially of course!) However if you do wish to use them, please consider making a small donation to help support my personal blog.
