Shisha (the Hindi word for “little glass”) embroidery is also known as mirror-work or abla embroidery. Originally, pieces of mica were used as the mirrors, but later, thin blown-glass pieces were broken and used. Today, small mirrors are commercially available for shisha embroidery. If you use these, make sure to file the edges first so […]

Buy the 221 Adult/Child English Smock sewing pattern from Folkwear. Smocks have been worn by rural labourers as protective overgarments for hundreds of years. The technique of hand-smocking evolved from the way many of these early garments were fitted, sized, and embellished. English smocks were most widely worn during the late 18th century. Today, smocks are favoured by artists, craftspeople, and fashionable folk everywhere. This loose-fitting smock is sized for both men and women, and the Round Smock version is sized for children as well. The Round Smock is mid-calf length and slips over the head. For children, the smock is knee-length. The Smock Frock has a button-front opening and is tunic length. Both versions may be hand-smocked on the front, back, and sleeves, or easily 'mock-smocked' by machine with elastic. Instructions and designs for smocking and embroidery are included in the pattern. This sewing pattern is available to buy in the following formats: – PDF (available to download immediately after purchase). What is a PDF? – PDF pattern + Printed A0 copy shop (We print out the A0 pattern sheets, but you’ll need to download the digital instructions, as we don’t print these. Do you remember these little designs from almost 2 years ago? Some of them have crept onto various blog headers.... Finally, after being scrumpled and distressed, all the pieces have been 'pasted' into my 'Edwardian Nature Scrapbook Page'. (Sorry about the the poor quality photos, but I completely forgot to take a picture before it was framed - duh! More haste, less speed should be my mantra...) I wanted to achieve something completely different from my 'normal' stitching style, and mix up techniques. Inspiration came from journalling and some of the amazing mixed media work on the net. It was great fun creating this, although initially, distressing and chopping /pulling threads felt odd, I found stepping out of my comfort zone very liberating!. What risks have you taken with your art or stitching, and how did you feel? Or maybe you are thinking of doing something radically different? I would love to know.x

These are the digital files to make the embroidered fichu and apron as featured in my images and instagram. These are loosely based on an extant that sold at auction. No closeups were available for certain regions so I ended up making those up. Please note tha that there are 35-45 color changes per section, and that an apron is 10 embroidered parts. No map is included but the files are in numerical order so that sewing piece by piece will result in a completed apron. Please note that I rate this projects difficulty level as ADVANCED. The apron pattern is for a 14x8" hoop. The fichu pattern comes in two versions; for a 11x8 and a 14x8. To do the 11x8 version, please replace Pt1 with the two parts Pt1a and Pt1b. These files are PES only. I am able to convert it for you; just send me a DM with your machine type, preferred file type and your email where you would like it sent. These requests can take up to 3 BUSINESS days. These files were made on a Palette 11, which is compatible with PE Design 10 and 11, but has trouble opening on a PE Design Next. Please note that due to the digital nature of these files, returns are not available. Please read the Readme for detailed instructions on how to use these files.
