We've just started our Geometry Unit. I heart geometry. It's one of those things that kids just get excited about. Shapes are everywhere! There are so many hands-on activities you can do with geometry. One of the first things we do is learn the names of common polygons. That can be trickier than it sounds - pentagons, hexagons, octagons....oh my! As a child, I was one of those nerds who came up with mnemonic devices to learn anything and everything. It just makes learning and retaining information so much easier! I mean, who doesn't still remember these.... ROY G BIV = Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally = Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction In 1492, Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue I could go on, but you get the point! ;) So, whenever my students need to learn something tricky, I try to come up with mnemonic devices for them. That's how this "Polygon Chant" was born. {Click to download} A little more details about it.... Triangle Verse: The first thing we do when starting Geometry is read The Greedy Triangle. That's where the "triangle on the hip" comes from in this verse. ;) Quadrilateral Verse: We talk about QUAD as meaning 4...my students know about twins, triplets, and someone usually knows quadruplets. Pentagon Verse: I stress that there are 5 fingers on a hand and we hold a PEN with our hand....therefore remember that a pentagon has 5 sides. Hexagon Verse: I tell students that HEXAGON has a letter in it that we don't see in a lot of words - X....siX also has this letter....therefore remember that a heXagon has siX sides! Octagon Verse: We talk about the prefix OCT as meaning 8. Where else have they seen this? Octopus which has 8 legs! Here's a little video of my students singing it on Day 1...they caught on pretty quickly! As I was preparing for my Geometry Unit, I realized that had NO geometry centers. Like none. Seriously. Out of all the center packs that I have in my classroom none of them included geometry centers. I am SO thankful I got the Geometric Masterpieces centers completed before starting this unit. My students are already eating them up! They love getting to use their "paintbrushes" (dry erase markers) to draw, divide, and shade shapes! If you'd like to WIN this set of 10 Geometry Centers for your classroom, just leave a separate comment below for each of the following that you do: 1) Follow our shop on Facebook (Teacher's Clubhouse) 2) Follow our shop on TpT 3) Follow me on Instagram Good luck friends!

I LOVE saving figurative language until June - it's such a fun language unit ... and perfect for our "dreaming of summer brains". We finished up our EQAO testing mid week, and this onomatopoeia activity was the perfect break from testing. How fun is that??? Students chose two contrasting colours - one for the background and one for the word and border "bursting out of the page". They also needed newspaper (cut just a fraction smaller that the "bursting out of the page border" and glued the newspaper on top. They glued their word on top of that (we had brainstormed a lot of onomatopoeia words, but for some reason most of them chose SPLAT for their word). I also had them do a little shading under their letters for that little extra POP (see, I know some onomatopoeia words, too). ;) I had seen this awesome idea on Pinterest and followed it back to Artisan des Arts. Her examples are FANTASTIC!! We also wrote simile poems this week. I found a little template HERE for the students to use for their rough copies. When students were finished their templates, I had them write out their good copies, and illustrate a few lines with a small image. I hung these up, too ... LOVING our bulletin board switch up ... even this late in the school year!!! (I have two of these "smART class" bulletin boards side by side in the classroom. 15 more school days left ... I think I can ... I think I can ... Happy Friday!!!

Hi Everyone! Happy 3 Day weekend! :) This will be a quick post... I will be diving into inferencing next week. (although I've dabbled in it here and there) I LOVE to start with this book: It is quite a simple read with MANY opportunities for the children to use their inferring skills. I first start off by reading it orally and talking about what inference really means- Use the text clues + Use what I know (schema) = Inference The kids catch on pretty quickly! Then on the second day we use an organizer to fill in our thinking. I find that this helps those that need a visual, will understand more clearly after practicing it this way. (click above to get a copy) The sample is filled in with references to "The Stray Dog," but it could be used with any book! I also found this website that has a inferencing game!! It will give clue by clue and then allow the children to make a guess. It is super cute and VERY appropriate for young children! I have also discovered that there are TONS of people that have created inference boards on Pinterest. Oh Pinterest, what would I do without you ;) If it works... click HERE to see all the boards!! Finally, I end my unit with this AMAZING activity!! This is so fun for the kids and it pulls our "unit" together. There is a lot of prep to this, but once you have it all put together it is so much fun. If you bought this, I added a new recording sheet to it and also made a final "what really happened" story. I'd be happy to share! Just leave a comment or shoot me an email! :) Thanks to those that entered my Narrative Writing giveaway!! Amanda and Kathy were the big winners!! :) Don't forget my buy one get one offer ends tomorrow night!! Just email me for details or to tell me of your purchase!! I leave you first with my mustachey class :) (this was part of my valentine to them... BIG HIT!) ...and a tiny sneak peek at my upcoming product...
You're in the middle of your writing block during the day and students are sitting at their desks (maybe on the floor or in bean bags dispersed throughout the room) writing. Smoke is coming out of their pencils. They are writing epic stories about dragons, or spaceships -- or something equally as epic. This is your classroom every day, right? (Not) "I don't know what to write about!" (now that's more like it!) At least that's what *I* used to hear a lot. Well, no more. Give even those most reluctant writers something to talk about with "Roll and Write." You can make anything work if you turn it into a game, right? Here's how it works. You give each student a copy of the page below to place in their writer's folders. When they are stuck on what to write about, they simply roll a die three times. The first roll indicates the setting of their story (so if I roll a 3, my setting is a party on Friday night). The second roll gives them a character, and the third roll gives them a plot. The stories can turn out pretty hilarious. It encourages creativity and originality. No three rolls are the same. This freebie even includes a blank 'Roll and Write' sheet for you to swap out new combos every so often. Even that student that hates writing can get on board with a story about a frazzled teacher at the beach last summer that breaks her ankle. Oh shoot - did I just jinx you? I wish you no harm, a teacher needs her summer! :) Grab your freebie here! I'd love to hear about the stories your students come up with! Pin this post for later:
