In my three years of teaching I'm yet to have a sick day (now that I've written that I will probably be bound to my bed with some sort of ailment tomorrow or next week during Spring Break). Sure, I've had subs, but conveniently for me I've always been able to plan out lessons in advance. As all teachers know--SUB PLANS WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOU. When I start to write them I always ask myself, "Do I really have to be gone, this is just too much work!" And then I have to think about "will my sub actually be an 'art' person?" Not knowing this I don't always want to continue on with our projects because you know...I don't want them to be destroyed! Ye of little faith, I suppose. Anywho, I try to simplify it as best I can for the sanity of the sub and myself. This lesson here was awesome. I was doing mono printing with 4th and 5th graders and no way was I about to continue that with a sub (my head hurts just thinking about it). The only resource they used was this handout to draw, otherwise the rest was up to them. My favorite resource to inspire sub lessons is Art for Kids Hub. The "how to" drawing instructions ROCK, plus the videos are pretty cool too. We all know how I feel about erasers and the drawing how to's don't even require erasing lines! Let me just start by saying that the sub plans I am sharing were created for my kindergarten through fourth grade kids. I ALWAYS make a lesson that's age appropriate for all my classes. This makes my prep life so much easier and the life of the sub all the better. For more tips and tricks, check out this video! Lessons like this require a lotta prep. Yeah, I will be keeping it much easier this time. More about how I prep for a sub can be found in this blog post. 1. James Rizzi Cities! This sub plan was a huge hit with all of my kiddos. They started it while I was away and I was able to easily slide back in to a low-mess/low-stress project for them to continue. Lesson, handouts and video can be found here! 2. Loud Mouth Collages! My kids thought these were the most fun ever...while I thought they were the most funniest ever. Complete video lesson and plans here! 3. A Colorful Village! Again this is another lesson that the kids work on while I'm away and we finish up with oil pastel and watercolor when I return. Easy, fun and super colorful. Video and lesson here! 4. Chris Uphues Inspired Hearts! Who doesn't love Chris Uphues and his happy artwork?! My kids love learning about him. I've not only got a video lesson but I have a short clip of an interview I did with Chris and his wife Jen. More here! 5. I am a Super Star! This lessons is so fun...it really incorporates so much, from mixed media to literacy to a good ole boost to the self esteem! I DID ask the sub to make the stars for the kindergarten before they arrived because I'm not that crazy. Lesson here! 6. Collage Monsters! Another fun lesson that the kids really enjoyed. This one required more prep than most, just an FYI. Complete details and video here! 7. Kerri Ambrosino-Inspired Still Life! Need a pop of colorful happy for spring? Try this sub plan on for size. So fun and we busted out the PUFFY PAINT! Lesson here. 8. Wings Mural! I know, you've seen it a thousand times...but the lesson originated here! The feathers were created while I was out on jury duty, I believe...and then we assembled it when I returned. Lesson and video here. 9. Britto-Inspired Collaborative! I love having the kids work on collaboratives when I'm out. It means we have a big beautiful work of art to hang when I return! Lesson video and details all right here! 10. Monochromatic Self Portraits! Lastly, here's a lesson that's always a hit: monochromatic self portraits. We love hanging these in rainbow order for a beautiful display. Below are listed some great resources for sub plans. When I have to be out, I usually leave "pencil/paper" assignments for the students. I learned the hard way that a guest teacher will have difficulty managing any other art materials and that students (especially middle school students) have a tendency to show their more, (ahem!) destructive sides. I love to show the "Who Is the Artist" interactive videos as well as leave a drawing assignment. My favorites are these "mystery grid" puzzle drawings. The substitute teacher has directions to place one bin on each table and the class is self run. The sub just makes sure everything runs smoothly. I have an example, directions, and clean up directions in each box and of course everything is laminated. I also have any extra materials they would need such as rulers and shapes." Here are other ideas from Beverly's Sub Bins: 1. "Oh, the Places You Go," - students take off one of their shoes and trace it in the middle of the paper. They design the traced shoe by drawing symbols or pictures of places they would like to visit. Or, older students can draw pictures of what they would like to accomplish someday. "Number Creations," students draw any number and then turn it into something 4. The Circle Game asks students to come up with as many different things as they can from one circle. I thought this activity was really fun! However, my elementary students were not that interested. Most of my kids' papers were dull circles with a scribble on them. I think older kids might "get it" better. I have included the handout from Ande Cook's Art Starters as well as my lesson plan with all the directions for a sub.
