With all that has been asked of educators this year (and every year), adding in poorly designed professional development feels a bit like putting hot fudge on your ballpark hotdog—maybe not be the most efficient use of resources…on so many levels. Adults are unique in how they learn. There is a specific finesse that is required from people wanting to instruct adults. When done right, professional development can be more than just “valuable;” it can spark real growth and change. What really drives adult learning? How can understanding the process behind how adults learn drive professional development? How can we get the hot fudge on the sundae and keep the hotdogs out of the conversation? Adults have a higher sense of self-direction and motivation Adults tend to learn because they want to or they see the direct benefit of learning, rather than because they are told to or are expected to. To use self-direction to your benefit when teaching adults, consider creating learning outcomes before diving too deep into content. Identify the value and benefits of the learning material. Curate learning paths that are tailored to your audience. If you have science teachers in the room, your examples should include science concepts, not Roman history. Make accessing knowledge simple and immediately applicable to help teachers get started. Adults use their life experience to facilitate learning Adult learners rely heavily on their experiences when they engage in learning, and they benefit from instruction that understands this. Use content that draws from real-world examples and relatable scenarios and that builds on direct experience. The challenge can be that some in the room might have experiences that are outdated, incorrect, biased, or incomplete. Be aware of this common point of contention. Start with a baseline of creating an understanding how to search for resources, expert opinions, proven data, and relevant publications. This is a skill that all learners will find valuable. Adults are focused on achieving goals Adults enter the learning process focused on solutions. They need to know how the information will help them achieve their goals, whether personal or professional. In giving a group of adult learners the space to create a recognizable, achievable goal in the form of a problem that they must solve, you will be able to encourage the development of knowledge, skills, and teamwork. Adults need to know how the information is relevant The immediate, short-term relevancy and the long-term benefits of engaging with the content should be underscored. It needs to demonstrate that there will be value in the time spent learning—that the information is practical. This goes back to understanding that the information, while it might be new or different, has purpose for the adult learners. Adults are practical Learning materials should be constructed with practical examples using real-world scenarios and problem-solving activities that require learners to access their experience and knowledge. Focus on delivering knowledge that can quickly be called upon in the learners’ day-to-day roles and applied immediately. Adults are looking for help and mentorship Create opportunities for watching the action unfold before the eyes. Provide a demonstration. Give learners the time to absorb processes and procedures. Use scenario-driven activities and case studies that are founded in research to demonstrate the content. Identify mentors who have exercised these new skills successfully, and let them share. Education is a unique passion, and every teacher has a different set of challenges. When learning new skills, hearing from someone who shares these experiences builds trust and credible insight. Adults are open for modern ways of learning Provide a flexible way to access the information. Adult learners understand that learning can be gained in a variety of ways, and they are willing to try new formats. By offering a variety of sources and options, a school can ensure that learners have access to the processes that engage them. Lear

At the end of each school year, I sit down with my daughter to discuss what topics she most wants to learn about the next year. One of her science topics she picked to study this year was the human body. Instead of ordering a boxed curriculum set, I decided to put together my own human body unit. In this 3 part series I will share some of the activities and resources we used for each of the body systems starting with the skeletal and muscular systems. The Human Skeletal System Our skeletons are the frame of our body. They give us structure, without them our bodies would be limp like noodles. They also provide places for muscles to attach so our bodies can move. Why Does Your Body Need Calcium? Experiment: This is a simple experiment you can do to explore why calcium is important for our bones. You will need: -several clean chicken bones -vinegar -a bowl with a lid or plastic wrap to cover it Let your child examine a clean chicken bone. Note how hard it is. Place several clean chicken bones into a bowl and cover with vinegar. You should notice small bubbles forming on the bones. This is the product of a reaction between the vinegar and the calcium in the bones. Cover the bowl and set aside. After several days check your bones. They should begin to feel soft and spongy after a while. This happens because the vinegar has reacted with calcium in the bones. Calcium plays an important role in bone strength and hardness. Without it our bones wouldn't be as strong or hard. Resources For Learning About The Skeletal System: -Bones from The Dr. Binocs Show is a great video for kids about the human skeletal system. -Bones And The Human Skeletal System from Ducksters has lots of general information about the human skeletal system plus an online quiz. -Skeletal System from Biology Kids has lots of great information about bones, the human skeleton, x-rays, and more. -Pasta Skeletons a fun anatomy activity from Martha Stewart -Skeleton Worksheet And Craft from Layers Of Learning The Human Muscular System Our muscles are what allows our body to move. Muscles are attached to bones with ligaments. When our brains send the signal, our muscles contract, moving our bones. Articulated Hand Activity: This is a really awesome hands on activity for learning about the muscular system. This activity requires a little patience but turns out really awesome! You will need: -Construction paper -A pencil -Scissors -A few plastic drinking straws -Tape -String Start by tracing a hand, the bigger the better, so an adult hand is preferable. Next cut the hand out. Cut the plastic straws into small pieces about 1/2 inch long. Tape the straw pieces in a row down each finger. Try to fit 3 on each finger and 2 on the thumb. You can use a few longer sections to run down the hands to the wrist. Taping the pieces on is the part that requires a little patience. It can be a little hard to get them all in place. Cut 5 lengths of string long enough to run down from the tips of the fingers to a few inches past the wrist. Tape a string to the back if each finger tip. Pull the string over the tip of the finger and string it through the plastic straws running down that finger, then through the straw running to the wrist. Once all the fingers are threaded, you can pull the strings to make the fingers bend open and closed! Resources For Learning About The Muscular System: -How Your Muscular System Works from TED-Ed is a video about how our muscles work to move our body parts. -Biology For Kids: The Muscular System from Ducksters has lots of general information about muscles and the human muscular system. -The Muscular System from Kids Biology has information about how muscles work and the different types of muscles. -Label The Muscles Printable from kidshealth.org -Muscular System Word Find Printable from kidshealth.org And be sure to check out: Part 2: The Respiratory And Circulatory Systems! Teaching students that failure is an opportunity to learn is a shift in the lens of instruction, and is one of the most fundamental elements of a STEM education.
Last summer I attended a GT training and was introduced to choice boards! I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! I think that students are more engaged and even challenge themselves more when they are given choices. The great thing is....they aren't just for GT students. Choice boards work similar to tic-tac-toe; the student completes 3 activities in a row {up, down, diagonal} They can be adapted for ALL students and actually lend themselves well to differentiated instruction. On Tuesday, I will be attending another GT training specifically on choice boards and differentiated instruction {I'm super pumped about it!} I can't wait to learn more about these learning tools! {I promise to share what I learn!} Choice boards can be set up in many different ways. You can base them off of abilities, learning styles, intelligences, and even levels of questioning. I have found it easier, if I focus on just one of these types. When creating the board, you want to plan out what type of activity each square will focus on. {You don't want to have 2 of the same type of activities in a row} The goal of the CBs are to have equally acceptable activities that you want the students to complete that are similar end products, but have varying ways to accomplish the final product. {For example, you are studying the Alamo. Students could choose activities from writing a diary from the viewpoint of being in the battle, recreating a model of the Alamo, creating a movie, etc.}The wonderful thing about CBs though...students can choose an activity they are willing to complete {taking into consideration their own likes/learning style/intelligence}, but they will have 2 other activities they will need to complete that will focus on other skills that they possibly may need to strengthen {but at the very least they're practicing other skills}! It's a win-win situation! I recently put the choice boards I created for my homework reader's responses in my shop. My students are required to read 20 min nightly, however I found that many of them weren't really reading every night! These choice boards give student's different options to respond to their books, while focusing on varying skills. I've also included 4 blank {editable} choice boards so that you can create your own boards! .....And I used the adorable sneakers clipart to jazz them up from KPM Doodles {love her stuff!} Here is an example template of how to begin creating a choice board based on Multiple Intelligences: Source: Dare to Differentiate Here are some great resources: Dare to Differentiate (AWESOME site for resources!) TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tiann B. says, "Just like all your other anchor charts, these are an invaluable resource especially for busy teachers (and those like me with little artistic skills and the desire to have everything look perfect). These make using anchor charts easy, plus students can have a copy for their own notebook. Very excited to use these this year.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tiffany W. says, "My students loved how simplified these anchor charts were used to address each of the expected science standards. It was also a good guide for me to use as I taught the lessons.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Xatavius H. says, "These were very helpful to have displayed on the board throughout the unit. I even printed them to put in the students' notebook as a reference throughout the lesson!” ___________________________________ YOU MAY ALSO LIKE… → Exit Ticket Sticky Notes → Holiday Themed Reading Passage Bundle → 4th Grade Math Posters →5th Grade Math Posters ___________________________________ Copyright © The Stellar Teacher Co.
