Algemeen DW Drums heeft met de Performance serie een reeks drumstellen op de markt gebracht die opvallen. Niet alleen vanwege de fraaie en herkenbare details, zoals bijvoorbeeld de spanbokken, maar ook vanwege de uitstekende klankeigenschappen die de esdoornhouten ketels hebben. Als je op zoek bent naar een professioneel drumstel waar je op kunt bouwen, dan zijn de Performance shellsets zeker een interessante optie om te bekijken. Deze shellset, in de kleur Black Diamond, wordt geleverd zonder snare drum, hardware en bekkens. Houders voor de toms worden wel meegeleverd. DW Drums Performance Black Diamond 22 4-delige shellset Deze vierdelige configuratie is geschikt voor de allround drummer. De 22 x 18 inch bass drum levert een diepe, warme klank met veel punch en focus. Die diepe, warme klank wordt doorgetrokken in de 10 x 8 en 12 x 9 inch toms. Beide toms worden los van de bass drum opgehangen, wat de klank van alledrie de ketels zeer ten goede komt. De 16 x 14 inch floortom is voorzien van drie stevige poten die niet snel zullen verschuiven. Constructie Voor de Performance drumstellen is bewust gekozen voor een langzaam groeiende esdoornsoort (maple) uit Noord Amerika. Omdat deze boom langzamer groeit als bijvoorbeeld de Japanse esdoorn, is de dichtheid van het hout groter. Dat betekent dat het hout meer kan resoneren (en dus meer klank produceert). De 8 dunne laagjes esdoorn zijn niet zomaar willekeurig op elkaar gekwakt - er is goed gekeken naar de richting van de houtnerf en wat het beste resultaat oplevert. Deze constructie staat ook wel bekend als HVX-constructie. Op de tweede afbeelding kun je zien hoe de ketel is opgebouwd. Om de beste klank uit de ketels te halen werden de draagranden in een hoek van 45 graden afgerond. Dikke triple flanged spanranden en TruePitch spanschroeven dragen bij aan een stabiele stemming.
