Dumpster Diving: the Right Way: Let me start out with this -- the only reason I'm sharing my tried and true method of dumpster diving is because it hasn't been shared on this site before and the likelihood of one of YOU encroaching on my dumpster diving territory is highly unlikel…
You might have heard all about dumpster diving, and think it is just for people who are in desperate situations. But the truth is more and more people are giving dumpster diving a try, as they see it can be a valuable way to turn someone else’s trash into

Dumpster Diving - Funny Bad Repairs
'Dumpster Diving' is a subreddit dedicated to urban foraging — searching through the trash for usable items.
This was the initial fabric sort for what will become my fifth Dumpster Diving quilt. (you can see the others HERE) The floral fabric will be the quilt's backing and the stunning turquoise blender will be the quilt's accent color. After weeks of stitching short pieces of 1.5" wide fabrics from the scrap stash end to end (over and over) as leaders-enders, I finally have workable lengths to test out my plan. I didn't count or measure as I was working, I just sewed and sewed and sewed. And ironically when I stopped and pressed the lengths, all three color groups were within inches of each other. This has been my working inspiration quilt. Wendy Hook's “Backward Log Cabin” (2018) Hand dyed and commercial cotton. Machine quilted. 40” x 60” Tuesday evening I started stitching . . . and I was delighted to see that my plan just might work. Then on Wednesday I chanced across this image. Designed by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr of Modern Quilt Studio, FRAMED appears in Modern Quilts Illustrated #13. And my brain took off in an entirely new direction. A few hours later with the help of an Excel spreadsheet I now have an updated working design for Dumpster Diving 5 aka Catharsis. DD5 may not be a finished top in time for my Dumpster Diving workshop with members of Scrap Club hosted by Kevin the Quilter on March 1st, but I will definitely have a terrific work-in-progress to share. (and from a teaching standpoint, that may actually be a good thing) Quiltdivajulie ----------------------------------------------- Catharsis (noun): The purging or release of emotional tensions, especially through kind of art or music.

One person’s trash is another’s treasure, and the ‘Dumpster Diving’ subreddit believes it quite literally, fully embracing the saying. It’s an online community of over 130k members that’s been celebrating the cool things (including pets!) found among the trash since 2009, the year it was founded. With a tagline like ‘Fun with Garbage,’ there’s no way that somebody wouldn’t be intrigued to open the lid and take a peek at what’s going on in the group!

I just about fell over when I first saw the 30 boxes of strawberries. My immediate thought was strawberry jam. Then strawberry smoothies, then what the heck am I going to do with all these berries? The chickens have some pretty fierce competition these days for the free produce scraps. At this point I still Read More >>

In 2020, I started living entirely off food from the garbage. I don't spend anything on groceries.
Dumpster diving is a big part of my life right now, due to my Stop Shopping Challenge. But because there is always so much free food available and not enough committed individuals who dive regularly, I would like to spread the word about it and provide some basic tips and instructions here.

A little while ago I shared the center portion of this quilt top (click HERE). But now the quilt top is really, truly, finished with its inner and outer borders. Dumpster Diving 12 - Confetti, the flimsy, measures 56" wide x 69" long. Here is the upper right hand corner detail . . . and here is the upper left hand corner. The inner border is Brandon Mably's 'Brollies" fabric. I tried the green from the abandoned sashing strips but it did nothing. Then, at Lynne's suggestion, I tried a bright orange. I loved the energy but the single color stopped the riot of color cold. When I tried this busy, bright, slightly wacky fabric I knew it was absolutely 'the one' to keep Confetti's party going. * * * Next up will be getting the blocks for Moxie laid out on the design wall. They can then be clipped for webbing and I can continue sewing the HSTs for Tussie Mussie in the process of creating Moxie's quilt top. (poor Macnas is still rolled on the pool noodles waiting for me to do its pin basting . . .)
