Lots of scraps from Kate Spain's Terrain collection makes this beautiful bright quilt. The strong pink & orange colors really stand out against Kona white and luckily I had enough dark blue from the same collection to add some balance. Every unit in the flower block and the small drunkards path pieces were trimmed to 4" x 4". The flower curves were made with the Quick Curved Ruler and the smaller drunkard's path were cut with an Accuquilt die. The Quick Curved Ruler was developed by the ladies at Sew Kind of Wonderful, and on their web site or YouTube you can find patterns and tutorials. The free pattern they have that is very similar to these 'flower' blocks is called Spring Fling. There are so many places to learn how to do this wonderful curved piecing - here were my sources: 1) the video on how to use your Quick Curve Mini Ruler from Jenny Pedigo (from Sew Kind of Wonderful) here 2) Canoe Ridge Creations 3) She Can Quilt Each flower block includes: (8) curved Quick Curved Ruler pieces beginning with a 5" square (like in the video tutorial above by Jenny) (8) squares cut at 4x4" Made for an artist friend who would't balk at something non-traditional, I used lots of color and made up my own the design. I'm working on a drunkard's path quilt with a lots of pretty colors and a mix of scraps. It's turning out much cuter than I first expected but still needs a few blocks to make it large enough. Since drunkard's path is on my mind, I thought I'd look at a few quilts using the pattern. Aren't these some happy quilts? Every one filled with color and movement and joy. While it's not the usual order to start a quilt-along with the block tutorial before the fabric requirements and other design info, since Kristie and I are each using a different block construction approach, we thought it made sense to show you the choices before you committed to one way or the other by buying fabric. I also know that some folks are intimidated by sewing curves so I wanted to be sure that you had a chance to try it out and see that it isn't that hard! Kristie is using the Go! Baby cutter to cut her drunkard's path pieces, and I am using templates that I designed. The technique with my templates is actually pretty similar to how I made my wonky drunkard's path blocks - you don't have to worry as much about cutting and sewing the pieces perfectly exactly, and then you trim them to the correct size. If you'd like to use another approach such as more precise templates, wonky blocks, or anything else, you are free to go for that too! I am also psyched that the templates I made use 5" squares - that's right, this means you can easily use charm squares and avoid a whole bunch of fabric cutting if you want! Maybe you have some charms you have been looking to put to use? You can also cut your own 5" squares for some or all of the blocks, of course. Download the template HERE - I suggest saving it to your computer, then when you print be sure to set page scaling to none. There is a 1" box on there for you to check the scale - make sure it measures 1" and you are good to go. I'll go into this more in a later post, but if you are making a design where you will have equal numbers of the inner and outer curve pieces from each pattern, you will only need to use the inner curve template piece - just ignore the outer curve template piece. (This is what I did for my central park drunkard's path). Here's how to make the blocks: Start with 2 contrasting 5" fabric squares. Put the inner curve template piece down on the squares, with the corners aligned. Cut around the curve of the template. Note: when I made my quilt, I cut the first using the template and then used one of the cut out inner curve fabric pieces as the guide to cut the rest. You can also mark with a fabric pen and cut along the line, or you can use a rotary cutter (and possibly use template plastic to make the template more durable). I found that I could cut 4-5 pieces of fabric at once and so it went pretty quickly! After you have cut the inner curve piece, trim the 3/8" off the ends of the outer curve pieces as shown above (I usually just eyeballed it and used my scissors, but you could measure and/or use a rotary cutter if you prefer). Put the inner curve piece facing up with the corner facing to the upper left, and then place the outer curve piece facing down on top, with the corner facing to the lower left, as shown above. Align pieces so that your needle is 1/4" in from the curved edge. You can basically sew straight for the first 1/4"-1/2", until the pieces start to curve away from each other. After the first bit, you will need to pull the top (outer curve) piece to the left so that it stays lined up on top of the lower (inner curve) piece as you sew around the edge. I just pull the top piece into place gently, and don't pull the bottom piece at all - the goal is the keep the edges lined up and avoid any puckers in your seam, without stretching the fabric too much. Continue sewing with a 1/4" seam, adjusting as you go - it doesn't take too long once you get into the hang of it. As you get towards the end, continue to pull the pieces into place so the edges are aligned - you should basically be able to sew straight for the last little bit too. This is what it should look like after you sew the seam. Press the seam flat in whichever direction you feel like. If you wanted to you could clip the curve inside the seam allowance before you press but I didn't have any problems getting it to lay flat without clipping and it seems like it will be more durable if you don't clip it. Now, to trim the block, place the block with the inner curve facing to the lower left corner as shown above. Take a square ruler and line up the 1" lines with the edges of the curve on both the left and lower sides (red arrows above), then trim off the edges. The final trimmed size of the block will be 4.25" so you may want to check that the block isn't going to be too small by making sure the fabric goes past the 4.25" lines (green arrows above); you may have to rotate the ruler slightly to get it to fit. (note: I slightly modified the template after I took these photos - so you will have more to trim in this step and less to trim below, ie, the amount you trim in each step will be about equal). After you trim the first two sides, flip the block around so that the inner curve faces towards the upper right corner, and line up the just-trimmed edges with the 4.25" lines (green arrows), then trim the other two edges. And then check it out - since you lined up the circles with the 1" line when you trimmed, your blocks line up perfectly!! And I promise, the trimming part gets quick as you do it, too. The fabrics coordinate throughout with the red and white making a striking combination. The quilt top was stitched by hand and machine. The curved pieces were mostly stitched by hand. This piece measures approximately 67.5 x 87 inches. It is an unfinished quilt and naturally contains raw edges. CONDITION This quilt top is in good vintage condition! There are light spots throughout that have not been treated. The white fabric has a general tan toning to it from age and storage. A few water stains are present. This top is a great piece of textile history! This is a quilt top only and NOT a finished quilt. It would be wonderful to finish as a quilt or potentially repurpose. Please note, every attempt is taken to detail imperfections in photos, descriptions, and video. The nature of this item does lend itself to normal age-related issues and must be taken into consideration before purchasing. CLEANING This quilt top will be sold as is. It was not washed. More than 15 years ago I pieced a pile of Drunkards Path blocks I pulled out my batik fabrics and had FUN curved piecing... I have to say, I have never been fond of Drunkards Path quilts... The layout and design of the Drunkards Path puts me on edge... so the blocks have been sitting in a drawer. While I was searching for something else in the Thread Shed I found the blocks... I started playing around with them... The full circle makes me happy ! Circles have always made me happy... I like the way the circle really jumps out at you... So BOLD ! So I made a pile of circle blocks... 16 inch Blocks Up on the Design Wall... not sewn together just yet. First row stitched together... Two rows together... All 16 blocks stitched together... 15 Years and the Quilt Blocks are finally stitched into a quilt top... How FUN is this ! I am not sure about a border treatment? I am liking the yellow fabric... We are all done branding calves and getting the cow and calf pairs out onto summer pasture with the bulls. I am working in the flower beds now battling the weeds, mulching, fertilizing and watching the flower seeds sprout. Hi everyone! Thanks for dropping by. Would you like to know how to cut Drunkard's Path patches with absolute minimal waste? Does that sound interesting? Then keep on reading. About one and a half to two years ago I started making more and curved blocks and piecing them. Every time, I would do this, I would cut and make templates from Electric Quilt 8. As you know, after using cardboard templates a few time, they get a little smaller with every use. I wondered if there was an alternative such as a multi-purpose cutting tool for cutting curves. So I started researching. I not only found one, but several different brands that were helpful. The following curved cutting rulers are on the market and come in a variety of sizes: Circle Savvy Ruler (Creative Grids® Swirly Girl Designs and Karli Alexander) Classic Curved Ruler by Color Girl Quilts (Sharon McConnel) Cut Around (Phillips Fiber Art) Fabric Circle Cutter (Fiskars) Quick Curve Ruler (Sew Kind of Wonderful) makes two sizes (one size per ruler). I have not confirmed if it will work for this tutorial. It incorporates STEP ONE in their description and use but does not include STEP TWO. To my knowledge, the curve is slightly distorted. Since I wanted the best solution for my money that could make as many different circle sizes as possible, I decided to purchase the Circle Savvy Ruler. It can make whole circles (diameter) in the sizes ranging from 3" to 15". It was very helpful when I designed a quilt that used ringed circles. You might remember the Retro Circles quilt? Some of you may fear and avoid curves like the plague, but there really is no reason to fear them. As with everything, practice and a steady slow pace help a lot. There are also a few tricks and tips about sewing curves on how to decrease puckering and reduce pinning. I am not going to talk about those today. There are already lots of tutorials and information out there about that. We are here to learn about how to cut out Drunkard Patch patches with little or nor waste. Let's begin with a little anatomy of the block. The concave part of the block should remind you of a "cave," because that is where the word originates from. The sun part of the block is convex. Unlike sewing together squares and rectangles, circles and curved edges will not be the same length when sewing them together. The length of the CONCAVE edge (circumference) will always be slightly shorter to accommodate the seam allowance. This is usually where some have problems, because the edge will have to be pulled to fit to the longer convex edge. You may think that cutting one curved edge from one piece of fabric will work but it does not. There are two more steps involved to make it work to produce an exact quarter circle. STEP ONE. Make the lengths of the CAVE edge shorter by reducing the size of the block. STEP TWO: Recut the curve on the CAVE edge so it will fit the curve exactly including the seam allowance. If you have a Quick Curve Ruler from Sew Kind of Wonderful, then you already are familiar with the first step. This is done be sewing the CONVEX part of the circle 1/2" into the CONCAVE edge on both sides. Reducing the size of the block and cutting off the edges is actually done after the patches are sewn together. Step two is not carried out. So, that's a little bit of the background behind the idea. Now on to the practical exercise. This can be used with any size curve and curved ruler from the four mentioned above. For Four Inch Finished Drunkard's Path Blocks 1. Cut two (5) inch squares. 2. Mark a 1/4" seam allowance on the bottom and left side. This is where we will be matching up the cutting ruler including the seam allowance. [YELLOW LINES] After you become familiar with this idea, you may eliminate in the future. 3. Mark an ending line on the top and side right sides where you will be lining up the curved cut. [RED LINES] Starting flush at the bottom left corner, draw lines to make a 4 1/2" square. Why? This includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all four sides. I am also right-handed, so this tutorial is showing the right-handed way. For left-handed cutters, you will rotate everything 90° to the left. 4. Line up the edges of the cut square on the seam allowance line of the cutting ruler. Your outer line (4 1/2" square in red) will match with one of the slots of your circle cutting ruler. This is the 8 1/2" line on the Circle Savvy Ruler. 5. Cut through the slot using a 28mm rotary cutter perpendicular to the the mat if possible. You now have a convex and a concave patch. The fun part begins. We will adjust them for the exact proportion and radius. STEP ONE: Measure and cut off 1/2" on each side of the CAVE patch as shown below to make the curved edge shorter. STEP TWO: Adjust the radius. Line up the CAVE patch with the seam allowance lines on the curved cutting ruler. Do you notice the number on the ruler is now 7 1/2"? There is always a one-inch difference of the inner and outer curves. Remember this for future cuts. Why is it one inch? That is four times your seam allowance. Your CONVEX patch is slightly longer (8 1/2" cutting line) whereas the CAVE patch is slightly shorter (7 1/2"). Now cut again using a 28 mm rotary cutter perpendicular to the mat. Here's what you have - minimal waste, perfectly round, concave and convex patches for a Drunkard's Path block. My tip: speed up the process by cutting multiple pieces of fabric! Here is the quick formula to remember. Cut your squares at least ONE inch larger than your finished block size. Draw your lines (finished patch size plus seam allowance on all four sides) on a couple of squares to understand where you will cut. Then mark on your ruler with washi tape or removable marker to eliminate the drawing of lines on your fabric. You can always cut larger than needed and trim down later or make different proportional Drunkard's Patch blocks.
