Chalcone-rich Ashitaba Powder can be used as a kind of nutrient-rich green vegetable in smoothies, salads, or in any other recipe that calls for greens. A quarter- or half-teaspoon at a time is usually sufficient. Also, because it’s a dietary source of ketones, Ashitaba Powder can be used to enhance the effect of a ketogenic diet or to provide extra nutrients during intermittent fasting.

I recently came across a review article about the fundamental properties of the plant Angelica Keiskei, known to us as ashitaba. Although many of you know that I harbor great skepticism of many, if not most, medical studies, this one certainly catches my attention because of its impressive list of beneficial effects attributable to ashitaba.

Brand: Dr. Cowan's Garden Like other members of the allium family, leeks are antimicrobial, help reduce inflammation and regulate lipid levels in the blood. Leeks contain important amounts of the flavonoid kaempferol, which has repeatedly been shown to help protect our blood vessel linings from damage. Leeks are an excellent source of Vitamin K, which helps regulate the body’s inflammatory process, and they also offer good amounts of manganese, Vitamin B6, copper, iron, folate and Vitamin C. Leeks are also a good source of Vitamin E, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids. Many people don’t realize that the most nutritious part of alliums is their green shoots. We feature this part of the plant in our leek powder to enhance not only its flavor but also its nutritional power. The varieties we grow are King Richard and Autumn Giant. The flavor is a sweet and mild onion-y flavor. To use, sprinkle on salads, eggs, rice and quinoa, buttered popcorn, steamed or roasted vegetables, fish or chicken. Add to smoothies, soups, stews, pasta, spaghetti sauce – really, anything you enjoy eating! One of our favorite ways to use Leek Powder is sprinkled over buttered and baked sweet potatoes. Ingredients: Organic leeks. Nothing else. Inside this pouch are approximately 50 teaspoon-size servings! $30 for refill pouch Net wt. 4.2 oz Recipe: ZUCCHINI HUMMUS WITH LEEK POWDER

Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple Looking for a unique accent tree or shrub? This could be your answer. Incredibly tall and vigorous branches adorned with a spiraling array of dark purple leaves create a dense forest of depth. Reaching a mature height of around 10 ft, the Royal Purple Smokebush can pack a lot of spice and be used in a variety of landscaping assortments either to create a natural barrier as a hedge or border, showcase as a specimen in a pot or planter, or anything you want to use it for! Its tall rounded growth habit gives it a gentle appeal which is characteristic of smokebushes but what sets this one apart is its smoky blooms that create cloud-like plumes in the summer. What is also great about this bush is its deciduous nature. Royal Purple Smokebush has leaves that transform during the fall from its dark purplish-red to a bright scarlet which truly lives up to its name of being a sight to behold like watching royalty parading down a rustic avenue.
While traveling through the Amazon to study reptile and amphibian diversity with the Herpetology Division at the University of Michigan, photographer Mark Cowan happened upon a strange sight: a caiman whose head was nearly covered in butterflies. The phenomenon itself isn’t particularly unusual, salt is critical to the survival of many creatures like butterflies and bees who sometimes drink tears from reptiles in regions where the mineral is scarce (we’ve seen the same thing happen with turtles). The traditional human diet in most areas of the world consisted of a wide variety of plant foods. I arrived at this conclusion from decades of investigating the dietary habits of the healthiest people who have ever lived.

Oxalates are simple molecules found in the leaves of many plants. For some susceptible people, when excessive amounts of oxalates are ingested, the oxalates bind with calcium in the blood and cause both damaging inflammation and precipitation in the form of kidney stones. Again, for susceptible people, lowering the oxalate intake in the diet is a way to prevent stone formation, reduce systemic inflammation and, in general, achieve better health. The dilemma, however, is that a low-oxalate diet can lead to the avoidance of otherwise very beneficial foods, such as greens. That is why we developed our Low-Oxalate Greens Powder. After researching the oxalate content of various greens, three emerged as the most tasty and nutritious while significantly lower in oxalates than others. Our locally sourced, organic lacinato kale, collard greens and mustard leaves will give you the health benefits from the regular consumption of green vegetables while reducing your oxalate exposure. Enjoy as you would our other green powders. Our favorite way to use our Low-Oxalate Greens Powder is folded into scrambled eggs or sprinkled liberally over soft-cooked eggs. Inside this jar are approximately 50 servings! One teaspoon equals an average-size serving of the fresh vegetable. Oxalate analysis (according to testing done at the University of Wyoming): Soluble oxalate: 47.9 mg oxalate/100 g (3.9 mg oxalate per Tablespoon [8.1 grams] Total oxalate: 950 mg oxalate/100 g (77.0 mg oxalate per Tablespoon [8.1 grams] From Dr. Michael Liebman, professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Wyoming: "Oxalate in foods can be divided into that which is water soluble and that which is insoluble in water. Total oxalate includes both soluble and insoluble oxalate. There is quite a lot of evidence that soluble oxalate is better absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract than is insoluble oxalate, so a person who is sensitive to oxalates should be more concerned about the soluble oxalate (the vast majority of insoluble oxalate is probably not absorbed so is not an issue). For this particular product, only a relatively small percentage of the total oxalate is soluble, so that is a positive." Ingredients: Organic lacinato ("dino") kale, mustard leaves, collard greens. Nothing else. $45 for 120 gram jarNet wt. 4.2 oz

Whether you live in a mountain cabin or a city loft, plant spirits present themselves to us everywhere. Since its first printing in 1995, Plant Spirit Medicine has passed hand-to-hand among countless readers drawn to indigenous spirituality and all things alive and green. In this updated edition, Eliot Cowan invites us to discover the healing power of plants--not merely their physical medicinal properties, but the deeper wisdom and gifts that they offer. Enriched by many new insights, this guide unfolds as a series of chapters on how plant spirit medicine helped Cowan resolve specific challenges in his own healing journey and in his work with others. In the telling, we learn how plant spirits can directly communicate with and aid all of us, including: Plant spirit medicine's five-element view of healing - Ways to assess our own states of health and balance - Receiving guidance from plants, including those found within herbal preparations - New passages on community and sacred plants such as peyote, marijuana, and tobacco - Additional interviews with plant shamans across diverse traditions, and more

Brand: Dr. Cowan's GardenOur Dandelion Powder, made from the wild and medicinal plant Taraxacum officinalis, is a mixture of about half dandelion leaves and half dandelion roots. Taraxacum officinalis is the true dandelion, unlike the version sold in most food stores or even farmers markets, which is a type of chicory. Taraxacum officinalis is well known as a spring tonic and contains one of the highest nutrient and mineral densities of all leafy greens. Perhaps the premier “blood-cleansing” herb used in herbal medicine, dandelion is known to help regulate blood sugar and clear the liver of toxins. The roots of the dandelion also function as a medicinal food and help regulate blood sugar as well as normalize excessive cell growth. Our dandelion is grown exclusively for us on a small, Demeter-certified biodynamic farm in Northern California. Add to soups, stews or any savory dish. Our favorite way to eat Dandelion Powder is sprinkled on over-easy or scrambled eggs. Inside this jar are approximately 40 half teaspoon-size servings! Ingredients: Biodynamically Grown Dandelion Leaves and Roots $50 for 57 gramsNet wt. 2 oz
