Here are some of my art dolls, all cloth, needle sculptured and as much as possible using natural fabrics. It is probably obvious that I don't give my figures names as in 'Susan, for instance, they are always known by their activity or some feature, such as the tulip below. Jester In a private collection Flautist In a private collection Tulip In a private collection The Reader Inspired by the work of sculptor Phillip Jackson Shaman In a private collection I have been making them for about five years now and find them a perfect displacement activity to my quilt making. Here are a few more; I called this doll 'Cirque Poupee', my French is extremely rusty and even back in the day I used to make up French words when I hadn't done my homework, so please excuse the liberty, but the jester style and the puppet inspired me. She is about 32" tall, the techniques used include patchwork, appliqué, the boots are leather. The sleeper has the full name of 'Sometimes Dreams are Wiser Than Waking' This is from a painting of Susan Seddon Boulet, an amazingly spiritual painter I was introduced to by a student. The boots are made of soft leather from a scaled down pattern of a real boot worn by Native Americans. Pea Brush is inspired by a poem by Robert Frost called Pea Brush. He describes collecting pea brush from the Birch trees ready to support his peas, I do the same from my lovely Birch trees. Here I have used very delicate felt and a bunch of birch twigs for her legs. The wool for the felt was the perfect colour for the sweet shoots a pea plant sends up, just as the are doing in my garden right now. I hope they don't get damaged by the frost. Soon I shall collect my pea brush. The Naturalist holds a bird in one hand and a bone in the other, her bag is full of bits and pieces she picks up when walking in the country, just like I do when I get the chance to. The Gatherer is a similar inspiration but also an experiment in using unexpected materials, in this case paper. Her skirt is made of stiffened paper, her overskirt is paper stitched in a grid and then damped and distressed to create an irregular lace.

Oooops! I pressed the wrong button, so any one quick off the mark will have seen this post with no text!! However, here she is - finished. It has been a while since I have completed a cloth doll and I have so enjoyed making her, that I think some more may well follow. I spent a very late night painting her, waiting for youngest son to return from a party until I remembered he said he was stopping over! Still, settled with my paint things and iplayer on my lappie catching up with The Killing was a pleasant evening indeed. Is anyone else following The killing on BBC 4. It is Scandinavian crime drama with subtitles, which can be tricky when you are painting at the same time, but I am absolutely gripped. Back to the doll, she is a simple cloth doll painted with acrylics with a little scene on her back, she has not got a name as yet, but I am toying with 'home' as that is what seems to be in her heart. She stands about 22cm tall, with a slight list to the right, I think that is down to my cutting and hand sewing but I hope that it adds to her charm. She will also be looking for a new home, as I have put her in my Etsy shop, so hopefully someone will love her as much as I do. Happy weekend! x

About my dolls, their everyday life, their stories, and bit about me as well.
I have not for the life of me, been able to figure out what to call these "busts." Nothing clever or moving would come to mind. They are just busts. I was making doll heads of different ethnic groups. I felt horrible just to have them strewn about, begging me to make something of them. Nothing worse than looking over into the accusing eyes of a would-be doll, knowing that you have no intention of making a doll at that moment. So, the busts were born! They are approximately 6" tall, attached to a wooden base. And despite all the guilt they caused me, I thoroughly enjoyed making them.

From Marina's blog: "This is what I’ve been up to lately: working on this new doll for the group show in London at the Show Studio gallery. The exhibition “In Wolf’s Clothing” will open on September 9th and will run throughout the London fashion week and until the end of October. The gargoyle in the shot for composition purpose only. It doesn’t come with the doll and I didn’t make it. It’s a bookend by Windstone, that I grabbed off my bookshelf as I roamed my place in search of fresh photo props. It worked out perfectly. I don’t know why I never noticed it before. It’s like it was waiting for this specific doll to be made to suddenly come to my attention. I’ll post more pictures of her within a day or two. Too tired now. Must sleep. So much exciting stuff is happening this month…..You’ll see."
