Number talks are a great way to start a math lesson with young kids. Proposing a quick daily math question to kids reinforces key concepts.
Here goes another cut and paste activity :) I was worried about introducing the Quadratic Formula because of the numerous steps that students have to follow. Some of my lower level students often get stuck trying to complete three step problems (hence my nervousness). I printed off a class set of Math Equals Loves Quadratic Formula templates and stuck them in a dry erase sleeve (https://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2016/02/quadratic-formula-templates.html) and had students practice on them throughout the notes. After the notes, we completed the following cut-and-paste activity over the Quadratic Formula. Students had to identify the answer and the box that correctly plugged the numbers into the formula. One word.... SUCCESS! Today, students took their test over polynomials and solving quadratics and I am SO proud of all their hard work! It definitely showed on their tests today. By now, you all know that I love teaching Social Studies, so it should come as no surprise that when I am teaching other subjects, I find any way I can to throw a little historical connection in. We are now studying about the 13 colonies. We are also doing both geometry and fractions in math. How on earth do I combine the two??? Colonial Quilts! Gorgeous, eh? I am seriously over the moon about how this project turned out. I can't stop looking at it. (the picture above isn't the 100% final product...those loose ends have since been cut off for the end project) So here is what we did. During our social studies block, we read a bunch of books about colonial times, focusing specifically on daily life. After showing the students a few examples of quilts, we brainstormed the qualities they noticed in the quilts themselves (many of them were symmetrical, bright, had repeating patterns, etc...) I then had the students create a 20 cm x 20 cm square (we have cm graph paper available at school). Choosing either 2, 4, or 5 colors, the students created a square that had at least one triangle, quadrilateral, was bright, and symmetrical. During math, we are focusing on area of quadrilaterals and triangles, as well as fractions, decimals and percents. Since they had this knowledge under their belt, it made the actual math portion of this project a *bit* easier. Don't get me wrong, it was still tricky, but just challenging enough, without being impossible. Depending upon how many colors the students chose, I gave them a recording sheet to do their work. They first needed to count the number of squares that took up each color....a HUGE challenge, since there were 400 squares! The triangles were tricky, but I modeled extensively how to count the portion of the square that took up each color. Once that was done, the students created fractions, simplified them, then figured out the decimal and percent of each individual color that was on the quilt square. Click the picture for recording sheets The students then found the area of one or two of their triangles, followed by the area of one or two of their quadrilaterals. I then laminated the individual squares and put the quilt together using duct tape. I recommend doing this on tile...not wood floors, as the tape will stick to it (I found this out the hard way :( ) Then, pull it up (slowly and carefully), attach it to paper on the back so the tape doesn't stick to anything else, and viola, you have your quilt. So there you have it. A social studies/math connection....that produces and AWESOME final product :) And just in case, here is the duct tape I used. I bought two rolls, which worked out well for the entire quilt of 30 squares.

Yep, it's Sunday, and time for us to link up with Collaboration Cuties for their Must Read Mentor Text Linky! Super Sandcastle Saturday (Courtney) A few years ago I wrote a grant to our district's educational foundation, and received money to purchase math games, manipulatives, and books. With this grant, I purchased all of the Stuart J. Murphy's MathStart books. I loved them because of how fun the stories are, how well the math topics are discussed, and that there are multiple reading levels. One of the books is Super Sandcastle Saturday. It is a level 2 book and focuses on measurement. The story is about 3 friends who participate in a sandcastle building contest when they are at the beach. Prizes are awarded for the tallest tower, deepest moat, and longest wall. The kids use nonstandard units to measure their sandcastles, and are surprised to find that their measurements didn't match the measurements of the judge, who used standard measurement. This book goes great with an activity that is included in Amy Lemons' I Can Measure Unit. There is a sandcastle activity in which students estimate and measure using standard units. My students really enjoyed this lesson, and it is one that I will be using again! Mummy Math: An Adventure in Geometry (Sarah) This week I have decided to share a brand new text (for me) that I just purchased and plan to use next year, Mummy Math: An Adventure in Geometry by Cindy Neuschwander. As usual, the preview did not get to the "meat" of the text and what I wanted to see, so I headed over to GoogleBooks to see if they had a better preview. They did! This is what made me order the book. Go to GoogleBooks to read how the kids in the story have to use their knowledge of geometric solids and their faces to help solve the mystery... Looked like a great text to use when learning about geometric solids, so I purchased it for this coming school year! This fun board game is a great way to to have student actively practice using the Pythagorean Theorem. The rules are printed right on to the game board so each group of student always have the rules in case they need to reference them throughout the game. I changed the rules a bit from the picture above. In the PDF version below the procedure changes slightly when you go around the board the second time. The first time around students practice solving the Pythagorean Theorem for the hypotenuse, while the second time around they are practicing solving for a leg. When I did this with my students, I had them work in groups of three. We played this for the last 35 minutes of class. I had one group finish right away and I just had them play again, but for the rest of the groups it seemed to be the perfect amount of time. [If you use this as a review or your students have a good grasp of the PT, then I would have them go around the board again. Or maybe think of an extra twist of your own?] Next time: Since I changed the rules a little, there isn't a lot that I plan on changing for next time I use this. There are a few comments I will make; 1) the purple spaces are part of the board. For some reason, I had a lot of students who thought they weren't playable spaces. 2) the pink triangles on the board are just decoration, they don't mean anything. These confused a lot of students at first, but the board just seemed too plain without them. Another change I made in the direction that I will implement next time is how students show their work. Last time I had them use a worksheet, but it didn't really work and I think just having them do something like the below picture will work just fine. Question Cards: I really like the questions cards because they allow students to see how problems might be presented in a stressful situation (Test/Quiz). I printed out an extra copy of the sheet that has all the questions cards on it and wrote the answers on them but did not cut it up. I was walking around the class room with it just in case I needed to help my students. But I only told them if they were correct or not as a last resort. I had the other player in the group also solve the question card to make sure the player who drew the card got it correct. Most students were okay with also doing it so they could make sure the player who drew the card actually got to roll again. What you need to use this in your classroom: • Two Dice for each group of students • PDF Pythagorean Board Game I included a blank page of squares so that you can make your own questions cards if you want.
