Do you use dictation in the classroom? If you don't, maybe you should think about implementing it into your lessons. Dictation sentences help with spelling, listening skills, and understanding of the English language. It also helps with writing complete sentences and sentence structure. There are 2 ways to assemble the Dictation Journal. 1. Copy the 8x10 cover and students use the 3 entries on a page. 2. Copy the 8x10 page and cut it into 3 equal sizes for mini-journals. Cut the writing pages to assemble behind the cover. Use the cover sheet for the front of the journal or use your own cover. A piece of colored construction paper cut to size works perfectly too. Students can decorate the cover in their own way. Copy enough pages of the writing template. Or you can use your own lined paper to fill the journal. Dictate a sentence a day to students. They write the entire sentence word for word on the writing lines. Use spelling words, vocabulary words, math vocabulary, homophones, vowel sounds focus, descriptions, or sentences from their reading books to dictate sentences. The door is open to dictate any sentence you need students working on or thinking about. Take it a step further and have students edit their sentences or circle the long vowel words. Use high-lighters to focus on specific words in the sentences. Students will go crazy to be able to use their high-lighters! Daily Dictation is something super easy to do and takes only a few minutes, AND so beneficial. Show journals at parent/teacher conferences. Parents will be able to see how their child’s sentences improve from beginning to end. These journals also help you see which students need extra help and which students are moving to mastery. Thanks for stopping by! See you soon,

These 8 pictures are perfect for a picture dictation activity. I have used them a lot this past course! Students get in pairs or small groups and while one of the students is describing the picture the others draw what their partner is saying on a board or piece of paper. Students can also use these pictures to write descriptive essays. ================================================================== If you use this product, I’d love to hear from you! Double blog post today, because that's the kind of day I'm having, lol!! I made two batches of muffins for my kids (blueberry and chocolate), bought two new outfits, so things are coming in twos!! This is an idea that I got from two of my friends who teach in my district (Jenna O. & Cathy K.). These are beat strips and are great for rhythmic dictation and notation. They were a little time consuming to make, but I hope to give you some tips to make it go faster and easier! Here's the general idea. Every student gets a beat strip, like this: This is Jenna's original template, I have redone them, using a different font to look more like a time signature. From there, I have rhythms that are prepackaged according to grade level (this will vary for everyone, depending on your sequence). Here's a picture of the beat strip with my first grade "pouch" of rhythms: Here's the way they look on the chart: After first grade, students will have more then one "pouch." So, when my second graders use half note they get the second grade pouch with half note in addition to the first grade pouch with ta, ti-ti and ta rest. ** Note: I don't call them "first grade pouch" so the kids don't have a misconception if they are behind in the sequence. I refer to the rhythms in them with the students. Then, when they put them away, they must return them to the correct baggie, kind of like sorting out legos when you're done building! Here's a couple pictures of the first grade pouch with the third grade rhythm baggie: And here's a couple shots of my fourth grade pouch: Now, I mentioned I re-did Jenna's file. Here's the four beat dictation board that I showed above: What you would do is print these out on card stock, laminate them (so they'll last a long time) and then cut them into the strips that you saw above. I started thinking about the Common Core Standards and wanting my kids to do longer dictation/compositions so I created an 8 beat board (below): I also wanted my students to write in 3/4 meter, so here's a 3/4 board (3 beat dictation/composition): And here's a 3/4 meter board that's 6 beat dictation/composition: I also made all of the rhythms in both stick notation and notation with note-heads. You print these out on card stock first, then laminate and cut along the dotted lines (for a class of 30 you print 10 pages of each rhythm): With the rhythmic elements that last longer than one beat I made light gray lines to show the beats (it's a nice reminder to the students that a dotted half note gets three beats, or a half note gets two beats or syn-co-pa is three sound over two beats). It's important when cutting these cards to NOT cut along the gray lines!! :) Here are the time saving tips: Print them on card stock, they'll last longer Color code them, if possible, according to rhythmic element- this will make assessing them much quicker- you can do a quick glance for color, major time saver during class! For a class of 30, you'll need 10 pages of each concept Cut them out on the paper cutter AFTER you laminate them Look at your curriculum and print the ones you need. Or print as you go. Start with the 1st grade set one year and gradually print more Recruite some 5th graders to sort them- it's a great reinforcement for them too :) If you're interested in these cards, they can be found at my Teachers Pay Teachers store. And there you have it, the double post for the day!!! Have a GREAT Martin Luther King Jr. Day tomorrow!!!

Framed Wood Engraving by Edward Stamp RI. Edition of 75. Hand Numbered 14/75 and Signed. Image Size : 6.cm h x 6.5cm w. Outer paper size : 14cm h x 19cm w. See more work by Edward Stamp. About Edward Stamp RI Born in London in 1939, Edward Stamp was evacuated during the war to a small farm in Dunton, Buckinghamshire. This quietly beautiful corner of England made an impression on him that was to dictate much of his later work as a landscape painter. His youthful talent for drawing took him to Northampton School of Art, where he gained the National Diploma of Design in 1961. Whilst employed as a tractor driver, he painted and sketched the land he worked, happily combining the life of farming with that of an artist until 1970. An increasing appreciation of his work at a number of One Man Exhibitions in the provinces caused him to devote more of his time to painting, and in 1973 his work first shown in London with such success that fine art became his full time occupation. Edward's paintings, both in oil and watercolour, faithfully represent the landscape around him in his adopted Buckinghamshire. Farms and barns, the fields and hedgerows are all captured in his inimitable style. In 1980 he was awarded the Bronze Medal for the most outstanding watercolour by a non-member in the annual exhibition of the RI, and was subsequently elected a member in the same year. In 1981 his wood engravings merited his election as a member of the Royal Institute of Painter Etchers and Engravers. Edward is now one of the leading painters of his generation. His work has been published in cards, calendars and print form and his originals are in collections both public and private worldwide.

Diane Reeves' Bold Abstract Lines collection was inspired by elements of architecture and interior design. Of Bold Abstract Lines 4, Diane says: 'A foundation of the artistic enterprise is light–it invites us to see and allows us to experience our world in ever-changing illumination. This piece is inspired by a radiant atrium in a stranger’s house in Copenhagen, Denmark that allows the day to dictate its shadows and highlights as the sun curves overhead. Use this piece as a moment to pause and see the light in your own space. Look away from the things you normally see and attend the space in between–how are the light and shadows forming surprising feelings stirring your imagination? Begin with black paint on white paper and embellish as the light in your space reveals itself.' Approximate stencil size: 6 x 6 inches
