This wonderful textile is a remarkable French folk dress bodice, dating to the late 1700s. Such a gorgeous French female folk undergarment!! This textile has a small scale geometric pattern printed cotton on most of the exterior. This type of design was very fashionable during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This textile also uses a silk brocade to either side of the opening, one green and one gold. There is some indigo fabric on the bottom and on the top straps. This textile is in extraordinary, well preserved condition (please see condition details below) with the fabric tones still vibrant. It was likely patched and worked on over the years, the fabric at the top of the straps looks to have been added later, as do the mismatched buttons. The lining is of heavy hemp and the back has the original lifts for the "rump" or bustle. These rumps are stuffed with dense straw. This is 100% hand stitched. A wonderful and very rare find!! ( EC88 ) MEASUREMENTS : This lovely textile measures approximately 18 inches long, 25 inches around at the waist, and the shoulders are approx. 12 inches. ~ CONDITION : This textile is in as found condition. It's in remarkable condition for its age! The silk brocade fabric has some holes, thinning and fraying. There are some pale stains, the worst is on the lower right front, as you can see in the photos. I've rarely seen another 18th century article of clothing in such well preserved condition!

Ok, for real this time, a post about something new! I finished these last weekend: sleeve flounces, a.k.a. false sleeves, a.k.a. engageantes (a française). Mostly cotton machine embroidery on cotton organdy, pleated to a muslin band. Embroidery digitized by someone else, and arranged by me into the flounce shape. The embroidery is asymmetrical, so the pair mirror each other. Yes, there is something these are going to be attached to...more on that later.
From the seller: This is a very rare corset or very early brassiere, dating from the first third of the 19th century. In a wrap around style, the front has gathered bust inserts, there is a slit at one side to thread one of the ties through. It's curved at the bottom in front. The ties, which are supposed to fasten in front, are too small for the mannequin. It's entirely hand stitched, and has an opening at the top for a busk. The only similar garment I could find is in the Kyoto museum, where it is referred to as a "bra", theirs in two pieces, also wrapping around the high waist. Very good condition, with some narrow streaks in front, some light brownish areas at one of the ties, a few other minor, age-related spots here and there, slight fray to the slit at the side. There are a few stitches taken at the top, probably to reinforce the seam where the busk poked through a bit. The color is a pleasing "homespun" tan/brown, best shown in the first and last pictures, without any green or reddish tones that might appear in the other pics. 1820-30. From Me: The ones the seller talks about from Kyoto are here. This extant one reminds me, vaugely, of the Lengberg Castle bra find from a couple of years ago based on the way the cups are placed. Because of the style, the cross over back, and it's uniqueness, I believe this from the late 1790's/early 1800's. (ie, late Transition period).

Pair of stockings for a man or woman, 1775-1829, Spanish; frame-knit blue silk, embroidered clocks of coloured silks
1780-1790. Brown twill linen half-boned stitched stays with shoulder straps and 18 waist tabs, lacing closed in back, interlined with plain-weave linen, and stiffened with whalebone, linen canvas, and a curved wooden busk to create a conical silhouette. The lining and the lacing cord are missing. The stays reach from the middle of the bust to the natural waist and extend over the top of the hips with boned tabs. They come to a point at the bottom edge in center front. The top edge curves smoothly up from the front into the shoulder straps, and the back rises high to the shoulder blades where the shoulder straps tie in place. There are eight panels, two each of a center-front, side-front, side-back, and center-back. The fronts are cut with an integral shoulder strap and the other panels have integral tabs at the waist. All panels are interlined with a plain-weave linen, sewn through with narrow channels for whalebone stays. Each individual panel is completed before assembly into the garment, which is whip-stitched together. The front panels meet vertically at center to form a single deep rounded point, which is sewn together only for the first 12.4 cm / 4.875 in. The rest of the center-front seam is left open, exposing a wooden busk wrapped in brown twill. The back of the stays has ten eyelets per side from the top edge to the waist, staggered for a spiral lacing pattern to fasten the garment. The whalebone used is about 0.3 cm / 0.125 in. wide and in varying lengths. It is positioned vertically, diagonally, and horizontally to shape the desired conical silhouette and runs into the tabs. Multiple patches of linen and buckram are basted and glued to the straps and top edge of the stays to further reinforce the garment and to cushion the cut ends of the bones. A 26.7 cm / 10.5 in. long wooden busk is pocketed between and behind the two center-front panels. It has a half-round profile for most of its length and curves in toward the body slightly below the bust, at which point it flattens, and tapers from 2.9 cm / 1.125 in. at the top to 1.6 cm / 0.625 in. at the bottom. It would originally have been further concealed and supported by the now-missing lining. Stays of this design usually have eyelets for lacing to draw the front gap
