It always amazes me how one pattern can look so different done in different colourways. Our Highway 10 Designs pattern City Slicker is one that keep surprising me as I see pictures of the quilts others have made with it. A few months ago we saw one done with a black background and bright fabrics so that inspired Lori and I to make one for ourselves to promote this pattern. We were at a retreat at Road 17 N in Winkler this March and pieced one out of our bright batik stashes. I just love how it turned out! Here it is laid out in the shop as we decided which block would go where. Our friend Audrey was also at the retreat and she just finished a City Slicker done in V&Co fabrics called Simply Colouful. See what I mean by how different they look! I custom quilted ours using only black So Fine thread. I debated about using a bright variegated on the batik fabrics but decided that I liked the boldness of the black on the batiks. I stitched in the ditch around the black fabrics and added 1/4” stitching in the black frames. I then added the alternating large and small circles, all free hand. They are no were near perfect circles but I’m totally okay with that as I know when you stand back and look at the whole quilt that is not what you see, the focus is the great texture it creates. I then added the X’s on the batiks to give the four patch a stain glass window look. I used Quilter’s Dream Black Poly for the batting as white will leave white fluff on the black fabric! I found a great new location for taking pictures near our house. Its along a creek with a small fence perfect for laying quilts over. Most of the fences here are just wire so this was a great find! I picked up a great wide backing at Up North Quilt Shop, a beautiful teal and purple batik. Think I need to go back and stock up on more of this fabric! Looks great in the guest room! This quilt really does look like a City Slicker in our little rural town! :) If I have tempted you to try this pattern you can visit our Etsy shop here.
I'm working on a new quilt, designed by Sandra Clemons in the March/April 2015 McCall's Quilting magazine, called "Cross & Crown." It's been great fun to chain through my Featherweight. Tiny squares of yellow from the beautiful line of fabrics "Lakeside Gatherings" for Moda Fabrics will add the pop of color in my centers. I'm planning to make seventy-two blocks, but apparently cut enough to make more than one hundred! I suppose it's good my daughter loves this fabric, too. Snow days became sew days this week! What are you sewing? Lori

This is Cindy's version of our Highway 10 Designs - City Slicker Pattern. City Slicker is our jelly roll friendly pattern and Cindy used Cantik Batik Gemstone 2 1/2" strips in the Northern Lights colorway. Cindy made this quilt for and with a some help from her 10 year old niece. We settled on the Fluffy clouds panto, a shiny lilac Magnifico thread, and Quilter's Dream Puff batting to compliment the minkee dot backing fabric Cindy provided. I really enjoyed working on this cheerful springy version of City Slicker. Now we just need the last of the snow to melt away, and no more to fall!
I wanted to make a summery version of our City Slicker pattern and chose the Gemstones Cassiopia from Cantik Batiks. I also added a light batik from my stash for the background. I wanted to custom quilt this one and come up with some new designs. I decided on a leafy feather with a diamond lattice in the prints. I also stitched in the ditch around all the background edges but not between the seams in the prints, I didn’t want to break up the diamond pattern. One thing I did differently than I normally do is used all white So Fine thread. I usually will switch to a dark neutral thread for the prints but I wanted to see how it would look. I love the results and that saved a lot of time not having to change threads each row. I love the texture the feathers created in the background!

The Champagne Quilt Pattern by Meghan Buchanan of Then Came June. The Champagne Quilt Pattern is block based and marries two of my favorite quilting designs - a star and an Irish chain. The pattern includes two different design options - Mix + Match Stars and Modern Solid Stars in four quilt sizes. There are scrappy charts inside the pattern so feel free to dive into your stash and use what you have! This pattern requires intermediate quilting knowledge. The pattern assumes quilter has knowledge of accurate cutting, straight line piecing and can use consistent 1/4" seam allowances. The pattern requires either yardage or Fat Quarters depending on what you choose. Material requirements on second image. **This is a downloadable PDF, being instantly delivered to your email after your purchase is complete. This is my City Slicker quilt--a Highway 10 Designs. It's a Jelly roll quilt, and it came together really easily. Lori and Kathy write really nice patterns. I sometimes modify the pressing instructions, but that's about the only changes I make. I used a dark background, the pattern quilt shows a light background. The Jelly roll was called River Rock I think. To me, the dark rectangles looked like sidewalks around 4 lots, with the streets between. Probably the imagery from the pattern name working on my subconscious. So, that made me think of the Family Circus kids running all over the neighbourhood leaving a black dotted trail behind to show where they had been....and thus the quilt needed meander stitching. Sometimes simple is best. Hobbs 80/20 and a flannel backing. and an unquilted photo Thanks for another great pattern Lori and Kathy.
