Ok I know what you are thinking "doodle ferns" what a strange name? It just popped into my head while I was making them and stuck. So there you go. I've been mulling over a new direction recently and because of that I thought I would knock up something simple and quick so that I could get my mind into the groove and at least have something in the can before I went home, doodle seemed to be quite apt. I also had some unfinished business with the yellow ferns. I had spotted them last week and was a little disappointed I couldn't think of what to do with them. It was a little strange though. I picked a few of the yellow ferns last week and so there were less to pick today. But for some reason they seemed to be less vibrant, "glowed" less in the sun and yet I couldn't work out why. I don't actually think it was the ferns themselves, I think it was me, or possibly the light was different today to what it was last week. I do think it is possible to see things differently on different days. Sometimes things leap out at you and other times you barely notice them. I think that is interesting. Often when I make three of something the first one is easiest, the second more difficult and the third a real pain. This is counter-intuitive and you would expect it to be the other way around. But the bracken of the third one just kept disintegrating and wouldn't stay intact. Yet the first went together first go. I wouldn't think much of it other than it has happened like that many times. So there isn't much to these, or at least they are a sketch of something within several forms I have explored quite widely recently. But still the peace of sitting on a rock constructing something simple with materials gathered nearby, listening to the sheep and the birds, seeing the two owl pellets next to where I was which confirmed that my perch was popular with others too (t-wit t-woo) just gladdens the soul. Honourable mention must go to the dad and son who skirmished their way down the hillside each armed with a very large super-soaker water pistol. It brings a grin to think of those care-free days when games are only limited by your imagination. They saw me pacing up and down waiting for the sun to come out, camera sat on top of my tripod poised to get a photo. "Dad? That man over their must be a spy. He has got a camera and everything. Really he must be a spy." Ahh - takes you back. Land Art Blog

Everyday at Art and Soul we journey through the wonderful world of art and art making. Sometimes it is just a sensory exploration of paint on paper at an easel, on a rock, in the snow, or on our hands. Other times we find ourselves involved in printmaking, collaging, candle making or simply cutting paper for the fun and skill of using scissors and seeing how they deconstruct and manipulate paper. I would like this blog to offer parents at home some projects that they can try out with their own children, or for parent's of the children at Art and Soul to see their children in the act of making the art they bring home or place in their school art books. Enjoy the process. Flower Petal Sun Catchers Materials: A heavy card stock or cardboard...in this case a pizza box worked well. Contact paper Paints Flower petals, feather, pictures, whatever flat object you would like to use. The Process: I cut the the card board into circles, but any frame shape will work. I also cut two pieces of contact paper into circles, one the size of the cardboard frame and one the size of the opening. The children then get their paint palettes, which at the school are little trays that have deep sections in them so that they can experiment with mixing colors. I also have the kids pick their colors, they know what they like and get very excited about having the option to pick the color paints they would like to work with. We spend sometime before painting just letting them mix paints and explore. Next, they were given their circles and they started painting right away. After they finish their paintings we let them dry as we walk into the garden to get some flower petals to use. As the children pluck the petals from the flowers, I attach the large circle of contact paper so that the sticky side is facing out. and then the fun of sticking the flower petals to the clear circle begins. The next step is to place the smaller circle of contact paper on top of the flower petals face down. Have the children smooth out the bubbles so that the flowers preserve themselves better. After the sun catchers are finished, the kids beaded wire hanger attachments. As a jeweler I of course love seeing them bead, but it is a great way for them to work on hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and concentration.
Lentamente, como todos los otoños, los árboles comenzaron a cambiar de color y perder sus hojas. A veces el clima invita a quedarse en casa, mirar la tele y,
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Coloured leaves? Sunlight? That's completely unexpected. Never seen that done before." The first sun wheel was getting a bit too big for it's boots. After getting all that attention a few weeks back it's been swanning around the house making demands and muttering about how "no-one understands me, its tough being a celebrity." Well I had to bring him down a peg or two so I made him an older sister to slap him around a bit. There has been a marked improvement, you'll be happy to know, he has even brushed his hair and doesn't only converse in grunts and frowns now. I did some travelling for work earlier this week and put some extra hours in. As Friday and the weekend are set fair I left work early and got home just before lunch. My partner said to me "so what are you going to do this afternoon?" "Land art of course" I replied with a grin. This was met with a frown. I guess tactless enthusiasm for a fair weather weekend wouldn't go down well with someone who works Friday afternoons and evenings and Saturday mornings! Especially after we went out yesterday evening and collected a bounty of beautiful coloured leaves that she then lovingly arranged on the dining room table. I'll be having them I thought! I guess there is someone else round here who needs slapping around a bit. This was constructed the same way as before using hazel, leaves from several different shrubs, reed grass to divide the circle and thorns to pin it all together. The leaves themselves dictated the form. I only had a few larger leaves so those went in the middle, the rest were much smaller and so demanded to be put into smaller frames. Also the colours available were more orange, red and brown with only a few yellow leaves collected and the green leaves were fresh and so had to be used sparingly as they quickly wilted in the strong sun. Other land art lessons learnt today. 1) The sun moves! No, really it does! Banks of cloud kept rolling past and when the sun reappeared I had to keep moving the sunwheel forward so it wasn't in the shade. As I have explained before land art is very "deep and meaningful" and I think I might be onto something with this sun movement thing, I reckon that might explain what happens at night. 2) It is never, ever the right temperature. It is only ever too hot or too cold. Today the sun was very strong and it was far too warm for anyone other than lizards and Californians. I blame meteorologists. Oh and the banks. And politicians. Have a nice weekend everyone! Land Art Blog
