Hi all, Ive been really enjoying experimenting with my cuttlebug and I'm so pleased i bought one. Ive been able to drag out supplies i haven't used in a long while and use them now in an even easier way than before. So drag out all your plastic stencils and today I'll show you what i taught to all my Monday card ladies....enjoy Open up your cuttlebug and put in your A plate then B plate on top and then your plastic stencil. Next lay your card over the top of your stencil. Now lay your silicone baking mat over the top of your card. As a shim i use 4 layers of card....as you can see these are the backings off the emboss folders you get....this way you will all know exactly how thick it should be. lastly lay your second B plate over the top to complete the sandwich and roll through. Remember to never force anything through your machine...if your silicone baking mat is thicker than mine just leave out one of the card shims....and the results..... What i found most annoying was that hole they use to hang the stencils in the shop.....but I just cut around mine and colored it with chalks...here's a close up Turned out like a fancy Lilly pad for my cute little frog. I take no credit for this discovery, a lady posted this on Pinterest HERE.Like any of us, I hate having to spend money on 'consumables', and new 'bug plates are not cheap, are they? As one of my 'B' plates was quite warped, and full of bits of paper stuck in the cutting marks, I thought I'd give it a try. This was my 'B' plate before: I don't think the bend in the plate shows up at all, but it was quite bent, despite keep flipping it when I used it. What she did was wrap it in tinfoil, put it on a baking tray, put some weight on top of it, and then cooked it at 170C,325, or gas mark 3, for half an hour. So I wrapped it up, and I used a good quality thick foil for it,and put it on a tray, with 2 pyrex dishes and a stone lasagne dish on top. She doesn't say if she had a fan assisted oven, so to be on the safe side, I knocked 10 minutes off the cooking time. When it came out, I left it to cool, then unwrapped it. The result was pretty flat, although the heat had got to a couple of the corners. So I wrapped it in a second coat of foil, and as I was about to cook Toad in the Hole for dinner, I waited till that had finished, then put the tray back in the oven after I had turned it off, and just used the residual heat of the oven. And this is my 'B' plate now- nice and flat, and all the bits of paper have dropped out. Bit easier to see against a white background- you can see the top two corners felt the heat a little too much. I'd recommend putting two tin-foil coats on it, more if its a cheaper thin foil, (which is what I normally buy from Poundland, lol, only got the Bacofoil 'cos Tesco had it going cheap!) and maybe some extra on the corners too. But it really does work! Makes them nice and flat again, and pops out all the paper. You still have the cutting marks, but that doesn't affect how they cut. Before & After

Yesterday I experimented with eliminating border folder lines using my Big Shot. I thought that the same thing could be done using the Cuttlebug. Here's what worked for me and my machine. Keep in mind that machines can vary and some rollers are "tighter" than others, so if a "sandwich" is not rolling through easily, don't force it. You don't want to end up with a broken Cuttlebug. Just try a thinner sandwich. The usual combo for using embossing folders is: plate A, plate B, cardstock inside the embossing folder, plate B. Since I'm using craft sticks which are fairly thick, I eliminated one of the B plates. Here's how I set things up. I didn't use the bottom B plate. I put the folder and cardstock directly on top of plate A. I placed the craft stick on top of the border and topped that off with plate B. Here's a closer look at how I placed the craft sticks. They're covering the design, but are well inside the edges of the folders. That's the important part. No pressure on the edges means no folder lines. I also want to point out how the two standard sizes of craft sticks work quite nicely with the sizes of these new embossing borders. This shows how it turned out. Well, at least how it turned out after three passes. As I've said before, it's best to start thin, so since I didn't get a good impression the first time, I added a Cuttlebug packaging shim (It was handy. Go figure. LOL!). I ended up adding a second shim to get the result that is pictured above--a nice crisp emboss with no lines. By the way, I tried using plate A with plate C (Plate C is thicker than plate B and I thought it might eliminate having to use the shims.), but this combo was too thick to put through easily. So, I offer this up as an option for Cuttlebug users who are noticing those bothersome border folder lines and don't want to have to cover them, cut them off, or hide them with a score line. Just eliminate them from the start. :-) Addendum (since there seems to be renewed interest in this post): You might be interested in peeking at a post that I made more recently which recaps many of the items that I've used for both eliminating folder lines and for selective embossing: About all of this Cuttling. After reading this artical: When Crafting Goes Wrong by Susanna Boyd over at Papercraft Planet I knew I had to share this. Earlier this year I broke the above piece on my Bigshot in a similar manner as Sussanna did. I contacted Sizzix to find out if I could purchase a replacement for this bit, which they then offered to replace free of charge. I had to wait quite some time as the part was ordered from America but it was worth the wait. So the lesson to this story is simple be careful not to make you sandwich to big and if you did know who to call:) Big thank you to Sizzix for excellant customer service and support.

I recently found a new love and new obsession -- the Cricut Cuttlebug! I should back up first, though. I

I must admit up until a few weeks ago I was vaguely familiar with the name Sizzix but as to what you actually did with a "Sizzix" I was completely in the dark! That was until I stumbled across a video from Vintaj showing how you could use their embossing folders with a Bigshot to create designs on metal ("metal" - my favourite word after chocolate!) I was really impressed and itching to have a go, I just needed a Bigshot........ I waited a few weeks then when the urge to possess one overcame me I went out debit card at the ready..............and the shop had sold out! So I trundled off to The Range on the off chance and came home clutching my own surprisingly heavy pink and black wonder machine. It sat on the dining room table for a couple of days while I waited for the embossing folders I'd ordered online to arrive then the time came to start playing! I started with some pre-cut 24g copper hearts and the Wildflower Vines and the Butterfly Swirls Deco Embossing folders. I was really impressed with the results. The design comes out really clearly. I added some patina ink on the practice pieces above to add a bit of colour. Next I tried a Deco Etch folder on slightly thicker gauge copper and silver. The word "Etch" doesn't really describe the finished result - I'd say it looks more like a stamped design. I love this one especially after the metal is oxidized. I left the silver unoxidized for now as it's going to be part of a pair of earrings I have planned! I used 22g gauge for these even though Vintaj recommend using thinner gauges - oops! But I had to try as 24g is a bit thin for my jewellery. I annealed the metal first to soften it and it went through the Bigshot fine. These were annealed 24g copper using the plastic Sizzix embossing folders - the one's you use on paper and card. The design isn't as crisp but it's not bad. These have been oxidized and cleaned up with wire wool. More examples! The more orangy coloured one's weren't annealed (the rectangle is 20g), the discs are 22g and 20g and were annealed first. Annealing the thicker gauge metal definitely helps to get a crisper design. Deco Emboss folder top and Deco Etch folder bottom. The rusty looking areas are the red oxides from the annealed metal - I was too impatient to pickle first! Overall I'm really impressed. Anything that lets me add patterns to metal is a great idea as far as I'm concerned plus buying a new piece of kit always pleases me! Photos of finished jewellery coming soon!

Hello there, a few weeks ago I had a few of my lovely blog readers mention that they struggled to emboss with dies (as appose to cutting with them). So today I thought I would do a quick tutorial for you. I only have the Cuttlebug to show you on but the concept is the same with the other machines. What you need is a tan mat (doesn't actually have to be tan in colour but most are, the one from Sizzix is grey though). This is a sheet of rubber that causes the metal in the die that would usually cut, to bounce off and emboss only. You can get the tan mats from a variety of places, most manufacturers of dies sell them. Here is how you do it ... The sandwich for the Cuttlebug is: A Plate, B Plate, Tan Mat, shims (if using them), cardstock, dies face down, B Plate. I hope that may have helped some of you. Thanks so much for visiting me today. This tutorial is for Cuttlebug users and uses the plates that should come with your machine to emboss metal stencil dies. You will need: Cuttlebug Machine A Plate 2 B Plates C Plate 2 Silicone Mats Metal Stencil Card / Paper The sandwich is as follows (from bottom to top - as you would build it) A Plate Add one B Plate Add Stencil (see top tips down below) Add your card, if using a patterned or finished card the side you want to use needs to be facing the stencil Add 2 x Silicone Embossing Mats (see top tips for more info) Add the last B Plate This is a pic of everything layered up as it should be, the pics above have been staggered so you can see what has been layered up. Sandwich re-cap (starting from the bottom) ~ A Plate ~ B Plate ~ Stencil ~ Card (front facing stencil) ~ 2x Silicone Embossing Mats ~ B Plate This is now ready to go through your machine TOP TIPS! Check that your stencil does not have a branding or manufacturers mark on it as this will emboss too, if it does make sure that in your sandwich as above, the writing side of the stencil is facing down, touching the cutting mat. If you are embossing straight on to a card blank or die cut shape, if you cut your tan mat so it is slightly smaller than the outline of the stencil but large enough to cover the design this will mean you get an edge free image. When embossing in my machines i use the spellbinders mats, mainly because i find where other tutorials say you need one, you get much better results using 2 as in my sandwich above, there are other brands and sizes out there, you can buy a 12x12 sheet also from spellbinders that you can cut down if you are using it with stencils a lot. If you dont have any silicone mats, you could try sheets of funky foam, but this will wreck the foam and it will not last many passes through the machine! my last tip is a very cheap one but gives FAB results (fab results that are so hard to photograph!!) In the photo below i have 4 embossed images, from left to right Bigshot embossed misted with water, Bigshot embossed, Cuttlebug embossed misted with water, Cuttlebug embossed I am not sure if you can see in the picture but the 2 embossed images that were misted with water (both on larger scraps of card) give a much deeper impression. I mist mine with a plant sprayer and just give it one quick squirt on the mist setting and then a quick shake then pop it through the machine as you would normally (i always mist the front of the card - the side that touches the stencil in the sandwich) It is a very cheap tip but very effective!! Hello Dear Stamper Friends: To answer the question from my last post... What do you prefer, long or short posts?... I think I will try to have a mix of short and long post...thanks for your feedback! Today's tip, I LOVE it...I created a Magnetic "C" plate for my cuttlebug, to avoid the dies from moving when die cutting...GENIAL! Before I was taping my die to the plate..now I do not need to do that...and when I do not want to use the magnetic side , I just switch to the other side... I simply cut a piece of this adhesive magnetic sheet "ProMag" sold at Michael's for $10.00 and if you get a 50% coupon it's much better...I use it for almost everything...for storing my dies, for organizing them on my desk...etc... REMEMBER... the perfect sandwich for a perfect intricate die cut...is this... A + metal adapter + "new" magnetic C + die (ridges up) + wax paper + Cardstock + B I use my Die Pick to release the paper from the die...and with the wax paper it comes out like butter... see the wax paper all curled up on the side For more tips of the week make sure to stop HERE or look on the side bar under Categories "Tip of the week". A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I had bought these, the new Tim Holtz Embossing Diffusers. You have probably seen, like me, the DIY versions that people have posted on You Tube, and they looked like a really cool idea. So when I saw these, I thought they had to be worth a try. This has #1 on it, so I assume he will be bringing out some other shapes somewhere along the line. What you get in the pack is 3 frames, for want of a better description, and the 3 inserts that are cut from them. A large oval, a small long oval and a circle. So effectively you get 6 options for changing around what you can do with your embossing folders. To try them out, I used the large oval. The idea is that you get an un-embossed area with the frame, or just a small embossed area with the insert. You can stamp into the un-embossed area, or even double emboss-adding a different texture to that blank area. Now, I did have a look around the net to see what sandwiches people were using with these and the 'bug, as Tim obviously uses a Vagabond in his demos. I did find a couple of different sandwiches for the 'bug, neither of which worked in my machine. So WARNING & DISCLAIMER here: If you've had your 'bug a long time, you will have a good idea what will fit through it, and what won't. To those who are not so familiar with their machine, NEVER, EVER try to force a sandwich through- you WILL break your 'bug. Err on the side of caution and start with a really thin sandwich, and gradually shim up till it will go through with reasonable ease, and produce a good embossed piece. Better to throw away poorly embossed cardstock, than a Cuttlebug! The sandwich here worked for mine. It may be too thick, or too thin for your machine. One video I saw the lady used an A plate, B plate, folder with cardstock, Diffuser, then B plate. Went through her machine perfectly, and came out well embossed. This sandwich was WAY too thick for my machine, but hers was fine with it. So be warned! According to Tim, the Diffuser replaces one cutting plate, and as for embossing folders I would usually use A plate, B plate, folder & cardstock, then B plate,I put one B plate aside, and my sandwich was: A plate, B plate, Folder & cardstock, Diffuser. Like I said, this worked just nicely in my 'bug. The first time I tried it out, I discovered that its a bit difficult to get the folder/Diffuser to stay where you want it to- so I recommend low tack tape to hold everything together while you feed the sandwich through. The first piece I did was with one of the Tim Holtz Alterations folders , Retro Cirque set. You can see my sandwich on the left. This is what you get- an embossed piece of cardstock, with a central oval panel left plain. Meaning you can stamp onto it, or use it as a base for a matted piece of stamping. You don't get a crisp outline around the embossing, by the way, it just sort of fades out. So now, the oval shape that is cut from the frame. Its layered up exactly the same, on top of the folder, and this time you definitely need the low tack tape to hold it in place- otherwise the minute you try to feed it, it slides everywhere. You have lots of options as to where you place it, or the orientation, as it just sits on top. I'm just going for the central oval here. I also tried feeding it through upside down, just to see if it made any difference- it doesn't, . So here are the two pieces together- the top one is the frame Diffuser, the bottom one what you get with the Oval. The thing Tim demo'ed with this is that you can place one type of embossing with the frame part of the Diffuser, then another type within the plain area using the oval insert. This time I have used the Swiss Dots folder, with the Diffuser frame for the first bit. The first embossing.Looking through my folders, I found one that I thought would go perfectly with this: I tried the frame over it, and it does indeed seem like a perfect fit. It's a Sizzix folder, by the way. This was layered up exactly the same as to get the embossed oval with a plain frame: Folder with cardstock, Oval Diffuser on top. Its not too difficult to get everything in the right place, as you can see enough through the folder to place your design. As you can see, lots of tape this time, I really didn't want it to move at all. The oval plate just puts the pressure on the words in the folder, and adds it to the blank area.
