Muchas veces vemos la discapacidad con lástima, no pudiendo evitar sentir pena, o pensar que no serán capaces. Pero la vida nos suele dar grandes lecciones, y a mi hoy me ha enseñado que la discapacidad no es motivo de lástima.
"Donde viven los monstruos" es un libro escrito e ilustrado por Maurice Sendak, fallecido recientemente. El mismo fue escrito en 1963 y es de esos relatos ideales para leerlo a niños pequeños (menores de 6 años diría yo) inventando voces dando tiempo a que su imaginación vuele con las imágenes. La noche que Max se puso su traje de lobo y se dedicó a hacer faenas de una clase... y de otra... su madre lo llamó "¡MONSTRUO!" y Max le contestó: "¡TE VOY A COMER!", y lo mandaron a la cama sin cenar. Esa misma noche nació un bosque en la habitación de Max. y creció... y creció hasta que había lianas colgando del techo y las paredes se convirtieron en el mundo entero. Y apareció un océano con un barco particular para él. Y Max se marchó navegando a través del día y de la noche... entrando y saliendo por las semanas, salteándose casi un año, hasta llegar a donde viven los monstruos. Y cuando entró al lugar donde viven los monstruos, ellos rugieron sus rugidos terribles y crujieron sus dientes terribles, y movieron sus ojos terribles y mostraron sus garras terribles... hasta que Max dijo "¡QUIETOS!" y los amansó con el truco mágico de mirar fijamente a los ojos amarillos de todos ellos sin pestañear una sola vez, y se asustaron y dijeron que era el más monstruo de todos. Y lo hicieron rey de todos los monstruos. "Y ahora", dijo Max, "¡que empiece la juerga monstruo!". "¡Se acabó!" dijo Max, y envió a los monstruos a la cama sin cenar. y Max, el rey de los monstruos se sintió solo, y quería estar donde alguien lo quisiera más que a nadie. Entonces, desde el otro lado del mundo, lo envolvió un olor de comida rica, y ya no quiso ser rey del lugar donde vivían los monstruos. Pero los monstruos gritaron "¡Por favor no te vayas - te comeremos - te queremos tanto!" Y Max dijo: "¡No!" Los monstruos rugieron sus rugidos terribles y crujieron sus dientes terribles y movieron sus ojos terribles y mostraron sus garras terribles, pero Max subió a su barco particular y les dijo adiós con la mano. Y navegó de vuelta saltándose un año entrando y saliendo por las semanas atravesando el día... hasta llegar a la noche misma de su propia habitación donde su cena lo estaba esperando, y todavía estaba caliente. Los monstruos son una extensión fantástica de nuestra imaginación, exploran nuestra naturaleza más íntima, recorren los caminos más absurdos, más oscuros de nuestra existencia, sus formas empiezan donde termina la humana. Son excesivos, increíbles y maravillosos. A lo largo de la vida me he topado con muchos monstruos, unos elaborados por mí mismo y otros de carne y hueso, unos propios y otros ajenos. Los hay paternos y maternos. Risueños, enfadados, juguetones, tristes, envidiosos, críticos, lectores acérrimos, quiméricos y hasta temibles. Abundan los de tez cetrina, atestados de púas y aliento sibilino, pero también hay monstruos hermosos, los menos, recubiertos de escamas irisadas, de movimientos elegantes, alados, silenciosos y leves, de esos que duermen a tus pies y se posan en el hombro como fieles compañeros. Algunos han seguido mis pasos con sigilo durante toda la vida, mientras que otros solo aparecen en momentos puntuales, cuando menos se les espera. Desde que empecé a olisquear en este mundo de la literatura para niños, me vi en la necesidad de buscar información más allá de lo que encontraba en las estanterías de la sección infantil de bibliotecas y librerías para entender mejor de lo que estaba hablando y poder contextualizar todas aquellas obras que encontraba reseñables, citables o detestables (de todo tiene que haber...). Necesitaba conocer todo lo que rodeaba a los libros para niños y jóvenes, no sólo históricamente, sino teóricamente; saber qué puntos eran comunes y en qué zonas los caminos se hacían divergentes, qué relación unía a unos libros pero que los hacía distintos a otros, y, sobre todo, conocer la opinión de otros que llevaban mucho más tiempo que yo metidos en este ajo. Teniendo en cuenta que muchos me suelen preguntar sobre obras de consulta o de referencia y que están interesados en aprender un poco más sobre este gigante llamado Literatura Infantil y Juvenil, hace tiempo que me planteé esta pequeña selección que, a modo introductorio, les ayudase. De entre todas las posibles obras y ensayos que he barajado para este “Aprendiendo sobre la LIJ”, me he decantado por una serie de títulos que pueden ser de iniciación o medianamente aclaratorias (he omitido estudios muy académicos, artículos científicos y tesis doctorales) para sumergirse en el mundo que rodea a la LIJ y ampliar su mirada hacia otros derroteros que los puramente lúdicos o didácticos de la lectura. Cuando terminen esta, si quieren conocer la segunda parte, sólo tienen que hacer click en ESTE ENLACE. ¡Disfruten! Teoría de la Literatura Infantil, de Juan Cervera (Mensajero, 2004. Última edición). Aunque ya tiene unos años y las cosas han cambiado bastante en la óptica con la que se mira la LIJ actualmente, nunca está de más leerse este libro clásico que, de modo asequible, nos describe las bases sobre las que se asienta la literatura para niños, de sus géneros, el proceso de la lectura y su contexto, a la vez que nos sirve como obra de referencia primaria (si tiran del hilo pueden toparse con infinidad de estudios especializados y seguramente más actuales que este). Todo un libro de cabecera en lo que a teoría de la LIJ se refiere. La Historia portátil de la literatura infantil de Ana Garralón y editada por Anaya (2005), es un libro (edición de bolsillo) que incluye una manera rápida y práctica de hacer un recorrido histórico por la LIJ de un modo general sin tener que echar mano de otros estudios más profusos (Carmen Bravo-Villasante, 1959). Con un lenguaje claro y conciso, la autora establece una cronología muy acertada del mundo de los libros para niños y algunas pinceladas interesantes en cada una de sus épocas doradas. La obra Bienvenidos a la fiesta, de Luis Daniel Gónzález (CIE Inversiones Dossat, 2006), a modo de diccionario-guía enciclopédica, constituye uno de los libros de consulta más útiles -y necesarios- para todo aquel que quiera conocer los títulos y autores más importantes dentro del panorama nacional y mundial de LIJ. Aunque yo me la he leído de cabo a rabo (tengo más vicio que un gato en las uñas), no deja de ser una obra de consulta que puede ayudar mucho en una tarea más formativa y/o especializada. Album[es] de Sophie van der Linden (Ekaré, 2015) y El arte de ilustrar libros infantiles. Concepto y práctica de la narración visual de Martin Salisbury y Morag Styles (Blume, 2013) son dos diamantes que hacen referencia al género del libro-album o álbum ilustrado. Los dos tratan conceptos básicos para entender este género, tratan temas dispares, la importancia de la ilustración, su estilo, elementos y lenguaje, el análisis y los recorridos históricos, la temática... Dos buenos libros que unidos al 100 Joyas de la Literatura Infantil Ilustrada de Martin Salisbury (Blume, 2015), un recorrido por cien de los mejores títulos de álbum ilustrado bajo la mirada de este autor e ilustrador inglés que complementa desde una perspectiva más artística los dos anteriores, pueden configurar un primer acercamiento al mundo de los libros con imágenes. Les recuerdo que nadie es infalible y que hay muchos libros que tratan este tema desde el grafismo, la ilustración más contemporánea (por ejemplo el Little big books) y otras muchas perspectivas. Buceen y elijan por sí mismos, pero yo entono el “Tengo una debilidad y tu lo sabes bien...” No se lo cuentes a los mayores. Literatura infantil, espacio subversivo de Allison Lurie (Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez, 1998). Constituye uno de los ensayos sobre LIJ más leídos y en el que la autora incluye la perspectiva menos utilitarista de la Literatura Infantil para aproximarse a la visión que el niño tiene sobre algunos libros creados para él. Aunque se basa en ejemplos muy conocidos dentro de la LIJ anglosajona, no hay que perderse sus argumentos y conclusiones, tan válidas y extrapolables a otras geografías y otros libros. Existe una secuela complementaria y actual de este libro (Niños y niñas eternamente). Siete llaves para valorar las historias infantiles, coordinado por Teresa Colomer y publicado en la colección Papeles de la Fundacion Germán Sánchez Ruiperez (se puede descargar en pdf AQUÍ), es un libro básico que nos abre las puertas hacia el análisis de los libros para niños utilizando para ello siete capítulos ejemplificados en los que se van desgranando elementos y recursos que utiliza la literatura infantil para interaccionar con los lectores. También de Teresa Colomer y editado por Fondo de Cultura Económica (2006) encontramos Andar entre libros: La lectura literaria en la escuela, un ensayo-estudio asequible que habla de las relaciones entre la lectura y sus dos concepciones (ocio o instrumento) y la omnipresente escuela, el entorno donde se desarrolla el vínculo entre lectores y palabras, desde una mirada crítica pero siempre aportando posibles soluciones. La penúltima de mis recomendaciones es el Albafeto sobre literatura infantil, un brevísimo ensayo de Bernardo Atxaga editado por Media Vaca con Alejandra Hidalgo a los dibujos que se interna en qué tiene de especial la literatura infantil y cómo se relaciona con el universo adulto a través de una suerte de abecedario que nos hace reflexionar sobre el género a partir de textos referidos al universo de los libros para niños. Por último y para terminar leyendo sobre la lectura no puedo dejar de recomendarles a Víctor Moreno y cualquiera de sus libros ensayísticos (No es para tanto, divagaciones sobre la lectura -mi favorito-, La manía de leer, Preferiría no leer o Metáforas de la lectura) sin menosprecio de sus libros de carácter didáctico (Leer con los cinco sentidos, Va de poesía, El deseo de leer, El deseo de escribir o Cómo hacer lectores competentes). Su prosa llena de humor y sus múltiples miradas sobre el objetivo final que tiene la Literatura, me chifla hasta lo irrisorio (seré que soy un cafre, pero prefiero el discurso realista, práctico, empírico y mundano del Sr. Moreno que el edulcorado y constructivista de Pennac en su Como una novela). Y sin más que decir por hoy, les emplazo a echar un vistazo a estas obras para sumergirse un poquito más en el vasto y extraño océano de la LIJ.

Como mañana es el Día de Todos los Santos y ayer participé con este tema que viene al pelo en De lobos, caperucitas y otros cuentos, un seminario sobre literatura infantil para adultos organizado por la Casa de la Cultura José Saramago (Albacete), me creo en el deber de compartir con todos los monstruos dicha ponencia (prefiero invertir el tiempo a trabajar en balde) y que vayan abriendo boca para el Día de Difuntos y Jalogüin. Sin más preámbulos, ¡empezamos! Prólogo Todavía me acuerdo cuando de niño íbamos a comer a la huerta de mis abuelos. Los fines de semana nos juntábamos tropecientos y mi abuela hacía arroz con conejo. Éramos muchos y había que matar dos o tres. Los desnucaba y los colgaba de la rama de una acacia para desollarlos mientras los demás montaban la algarabía. Nunca vi nada extraño en todo aquello. Era una reunión familiar y había que comer. La muerte estaba presente. Había sido invitada también. Antonio López. 1972. Conejo desollado. Óleo sobre tabla. Las experiencias que los niños tienen con la muerte pueden ser de lo más variopintas. Tanto o más que las de los adultos. Y no por ello deben ser traumáticas, pues dependen de numerosos factores. Hay adultos mucho más susceptibles a la muerte que algunos niños, y la experiencia, aunque es un grado, no implica una estasis mayor. Yo mismo, sin ir más lejos, he sufrido muertes de seres queridos que para otras personas hubieran sido devastadoras. Nadie sabe cómo actuar ante la muerte, ni mayores ni pequeños, pero lo cierto es que todos, en algún momento de la vida debemos enfrentarnos a este hecho impepinable, y lo peor de todo es que nadie elige cuando hacerlo. La muerte es. Te pilla por sorpresa y te pesca. Kitty Crowther. La visite de petite mort. La muerte en la historia de la infancia Antes de comenzar con mi especialidad -destripar libros-, me gustaría hacer algo de memoria y ver la relación que los niños han tenido con la muerte a lo largo de la Historia, pues es necesario tener en cuenta ciertas consideraciones al respecto para entender un tipo de libros que hoy por hoy no nos deja indiferentes. En la historia de las producciones literarias que leen los niños podríamos diferenciar dos grandes etapas. La primera abarca hasta los siglos XVIII-XIX, es decir, todos los siglos anteriores al concepto moderno de infancia. En esos tiempos los niños no eran poseedores de una parcela exclusiva pues, a rasgos generales, eran equivalentes a los adultos. Aunque existen discrepancias entre los estudiosos en lo que al trato hacia los niños se refiere (Mientras Ariés habla de cierta brutalidad, otros como Wilson abogan por una diferenciación hacia estos), podríamos decir que los niños vivían de manera similar a la de los adultos. La elevada mortalidad, más todavía la infantil, la prevalencia de enfermedades y epidemias, y los estragos de los conflictos bélicos, eran el pan de cada día, un hecho que favorecía la participación de los niños en los ritos que acompañan a la muerte. El niño merodeaba en los velatorios, acompañaba en los entierros y estaba presente en todo tipo de actos que intentaban homenajear a los muertos. Era consciente del paso efímero de la vida. En lo relativo a la vida cultural. No había grandes diferencias entre pequeños y mayores y los niños estaban en contacto con las mismas temáticas y argumentos que los adultos. La muerte estaba presente, tanto en las historias narradas, como en las escritas. Es un hecho que la figura de la muerte llega a los niños a través de las historias contadas al calor de la lumbre y tiene mucho protagonismo en los cuentos populares de cualquier parte del mundo (N.B.: Pueden echar un ojo a muchas de estas antologías AQUÍ). Niños que pierden a sus padres, personajes devorados por monstruos, o villanos muertos, abunda(ba)n en estas historias que el folklore ha traído hasta nuestros días. Ni la alta cultura ni la popular incidían sobre ella, simplemente exponían la realidad. Ivan Bilibin. Ilustración para Marya Morevna recopilado por Afanasiev. La segunda etapa comprende el periodo de tiempo entre los siglos XVIII-XIX y la actualidad. Nace el concepto moderno de infancia gracias a la revolución industrial y el capitalismo, las denuncias sociales (véanse las novelas de Dickens) y los derechos de la infancia (explotación laboral infantil), las representaciones inocentes de los niños en el mundo del arte (Véase La edad de la inocencia de Reynolds, ca. 1785), y las aportaciones de pensadores como Locke y Rousseau. La infancia nace tal y como la conocemos hoy día. El niño desprende una imagen de santidad e inocencia que debe preservarse el mayor tiempo posible. Debe ser apartado de los problemas adultos y vivir ajeno a los males mundanos para formarse de manera libre en base a unos principios que primero se adoptan en las sociedades occidentales y han ido cundiendo en las orientales. En palabras de Rousseau ¿Por qué robar a estas inocentes criaturas de las alegrías que pasan tan deprisa? ¿Por qué llenar con amargura los fugaces días de la infancia, días que no regresarán ni para ellos ni para usted? Reynolds. ca. 1785. La edad de la inocencia. Óleo sobre lienzo. El niño no acude a los entierros ni a los velatorios, no sabe lo que es un cementerio. No es consciente de que convive con las enfermedades de sus familiares y seres queridos, tiene sus propios espacios en hospitales y centros de salud donde recibe otro tratamiento, la escuela cambia su rumbo con nuevas corrientes pedagógicas, e incluso se le habla de forma diferente (velada) al adulto… Es decir, se desarrolla en torno a él todo un engranaje que le facilita la vida. Este es el motivo por el que el adulto comienza a preocuparse por las temáticas culturales y, ayudado del proteccionismo, el puritanismo, y otros mecanismos de censura, la muerte pasa a estar en un segundo plano en las producciones culturales que emergen a partir de este momento, más todavía en la Literatura Infantil, un “género” que nace por y para la infancia. Los libros para niños evitan temas como la violencia, el sexo o la evanescencia de la vida. Es mejor que el lector se haga esas preguntas a posteriori, cuando ingrese en el mundo adulto, cuando su experiencia vital le provea de las armas para enfrentarse a la realidad. Mientras tanto vivirá en un limbo ideal en el que pueda jugar y divertirse a sus anchas. Unas ideas que, aunque matizadas, todavía son las que prevalecen en la actualidad. La muerte se ha erradicado del universo infantil, evitando que los niños entren en contacto con ella, sobre todo durante la primera infancia. La muerte en la era posmoderna de la LIJ ¿Reflejo de la realidad, experiencia estética o utilidad? Si bien es cierto que la muerte ha sido un tema tabú en la LIJ y el ecosistema adulto que rodea la infancia (estoy harto de que parezca que las pistolas de juguete las cargue el mismísimo diablo), también hay que apuntar que en ese mismo contexto, sobre todo en la primera Literatura Infantil, se publican libros como Alicia en el país de las maravillas, Peter Pan y Wendy y otros muchos clásicos que además de constituir un corpus central donde prima lo humanístico, han provisto a los niños de esas temáticas valientes donde la violencia, la muerte o el sexo constituyen una generosa experiencia estética y de ocio, sin que importe ese deje de condescendencia. Sirven por y para una lectura en libertad donde los discursos más variopintos se abren camino. Autores como Barrie, Carroll, Kipling, Twain, Baum y muchos otros rompen una lanza por los niños e incorporan a sus obras estas parcelas menos ortodoxas. La muerte se abre camino con la Reina Roja y su obsesión por cortar cabezas o cuando el cocodrilo se zampa al capitán Garfio sin ningún pudor. El lector disfruta de la lectura, un espacio para el recreo donde puede vivir a sus anchas sin tener que preocuparse de lo permitido o de lo prohibido. Simplemente deja volar su imaginación y encuentra su propio discurso. Viendo que ese espacio subversivo llamado libro infantil tiene aceptación entre el público, comienza a existir una diversificación del producto y sus temáticas y a partir de los años 70 y 80 cuando empieza a ver la luz el movimiento del realismo crítico, uno que se lanza a escribir sobre temáticas ocultas a esa infancia, desafiando estos convencionalismos adultos y proporcionando obras sin veladuras ni cortapisas a los niños, se crean nuevos espacios en los que hablar de los temas prohibidos, en los que el lector pueda perderse e ir encontrando respuestas desde un prisma diferente. No obstante, a finales de los años 80, durante todos los 90 y lo que llevamos de nuevo milenio, ese espacio un tanto libertino ha ido cambiando paulatinamente, y muchos de los libros que hablan de este tema vuelven a denotar cierta complacencia para con el mundo adulto. Se abren camino los llamados libros de valores y emociones, nuevas tendencias en el panorama cultural infantil que intentan “ayudar” al niño en su búsqueda, que se centran en conductas que suscitan controversia, y que pueden interesar a todos los adultos que interaccionen con los niños familiar o laboralmente, es decir, el libro infantil es un aliado, es útil para sus fines. Vuelve la censura con otro disfraz, el del buenismo y la autoayuda, la paradoja actual que no deja al lector enfrentarse a la muerte propia o ajena desde el lugar privado que le ofrece un libro. Bárður Oskarsson. The Flat Rabbit. Estudios específicos sobre la muerte en la LIJ No se crean que les estoy descubriendo América, pues son muchos quienes se han centrado en este tema que tanto nos gusta a los monstruos. No sé si se debe a nuestros propios prejuicios, a que en nosotros cunden esas ideas románticas sobre la infancia, a que somos algo masoquistas y lo pasamos en grande con una historia en la que la muerte hace de las suyas, o a que le damos demasiada importancia a nuestra mortalidad (Nota: El otro día un alumno me preguntó si tenía que traerme un justificante en caso de que su abuelo falleciese, a lo que le contesté que sí, que conocía a más de uno que sería capaz de matar a toda su familia con tal de librarse de mis exámenes), pero el caso es que este tema es una constante entre los estudiosos de la LIJ desde los años 70 a esta parte. En el apartado académico hay montones de estudios que tratan este tema desde diferentes prismas. Considero imprescindibles los artículos ya clásicos de Lois Rauch Gibson y Laura M. Zaidman (1991), el de Francelia Butler (1972), o el de Timothy E. Moore y Reet Mae. (1987), en los que se establecen las bases que he incluido en la contextualización y aportan muchísimos más datos de interés sobre la evolución de este tipo de títulos. También existen capítulos enteros dedicados a este tema, de entre los que destaco los de Lesley Clement (2020), una revisión actual de todos los temas que se relacionan con la muerte en los libros para niños, y el Death: The Ultimate Taboo de Sandra L. Beckett (2012), un estudio con enjundia de algunos álbumes sobre la muerte que ella considera un puente intergeneracional, una razón por la que muchos definen a este tipo de libros como “álbumes para adultos” cuando en realidad se dirigen a cualquier tipo de lector. En castellano este tema ha sido tratado con profusión en la tesis doctoral que Txabi Arnal Gil presentó en el año 2011 con el título El tratamiento de la muerte en el álbum infantil. Obras publicadas en castellano (1980-2008) y donde realiza un recorrido por los álbumes en castellano sobre la parca y orientado sobre todo hacia la docencia en educación infantil y primaria. Por último hablarles de los algunos artículos que desde el ámbito de la divulgación se han realizado sobre los libros infantiles y la muerte, como el publicado en la revista CLIJ en su número 79 y escrito por Juan José Lage Fernández (1996), el de Ana Nebreda en su Biblioabrazo (2015) o el de Javier Pizarro para El Asombrario (2015). (N.B.: Pueden encontrar todas las referencias completas al final del post) Glemm Ringtved y Charlotte Pardi. Cry Heart, But Never Break. Una pequeña clasificación de las temáticas sobre la muerte en la LIJ Aunque algunas de las contribuciones anteriores prefieren hacer un estudio pormenorizado de estos títulos y usar abundantes criterios de clasificación, véanse las causas de muerte, la identidad del fallecido o su edad, un servidor prefiere centrarse más en los temas generales y ayudarse de algunos de los álbumes que más le gustan para ilustrar sus ideas. Las taxonomías son siempre tediosas (se lo dice un biólogo) y prefiero que sean ustedes quienes vean en la selección bibliográfica final estas características, pues hay libros que no sólo presentan una, sino muchas. Por último decir que, a pesar de haberme centrado en el álbum, creo que estas categorías que expongo a continuación pueden hacerse extensivas a todo tipo de libros que giren en torno a la muerte, pues su universalidad es manifiesta, tanto en narrativa juvenil, en poesía infantil, como en libro informativo. Veamos: 1. La muerte personificada y otros símbolos Por su carácter dual, el álbum se presta mucho a retratar a la muerte, a describirla y a simbolizarla, algo que merece una mirada con cierto detenimiento. Teniendo en cuenta que casi todos los álbumes que conozco son occidentales, prevalece en ellos la representación clásica de la muerte, un esqueleto provisto de túnica que deambula entre las páginas. Si bien es cierto que esta representación de la muerte bebe de la iconografía cristiana, otrora terrorífica y lúgubre, hemos de notar que en la mayor parte de estos libres no encontramos una cara tétrica de la muerte, sino otra que esboza sonrisas, que se apena junto a los fallecidos y se deshace en atenciones con ellos. Quizá inquietante pero nunca con cara de pocos amigos. Es la muerte más humana, la más tierna, la que aparece en libros como El pato, la muerte y el tulipán. Es la imagen que triunfa sobre esa otra que abarrota el ideario más clásico. Quizás las representaciones de la muerte que más se alejan de lo clásico, véase como ejemplo las de Soy la muerte, aportan menos identificación en los lectores. Considero por otro lado que minimizan el impacto, son menos efectistas pero igual de resolutivas. Mención aparte merecen las representaciones más próximas a la idea latinoamericana de la muerte, entre las que contamos con Parco de Nogués y Guridi, donde el toque alegre, desenfadado y casi musical produce un efecto de simpatía hacia la figura,y con Pequeña Parka de Squilloni y Faber, que se asemeja bastante a la anterior. Aunque suele vestir de color oscuro (negro, gris,…), la muerte se puede envolver en mantos coloristas, llenos de bordados y formas vivas, como por ejemplo los colores amarillos y anaranjados que priman en Asia para el luto y que podemos contemplar en las representaciones de algunas obras recién publicadas como Migrantes de Issa Watanabe. Del mismo modo hay veces que la muerte es una mera espectadora de lo que acontece a su alrededor, no está patente y eso transforma la atmósfera. Es inquietante, interviene pero no se involucra en el desarrollo de los acontecimientos. Esto sucede en todas aquellas obras donde no hay una alusión clara al personaje. 2. Prepararse para la muerte Nadie está preparado para morir, sin embargo, cuando la vejez hace su aparición, los humanos, de un modo u otro, vamos planteándonos el fin de la vida. Esta es una cuestión de suma importancia en muchos de estos libros, pues el simbolismo es de lo más variado en los álbumes infantiles. Bolsas de té, islas paradisiacas, o la evolución de un jardín son los objetos, lugares y procesos elegidos por los autores para explicar la transición de la vida a la muerte. Los clásicos Abuela de arriba, abuela de debajo de De Paola o Nana Vieja de Wild y Brooks hacen hincapié en ese discurso sobre el devenir. En el primero es el protagonista quien extrae sus propias conclusiones, mientras que en el segundo, es la abuela quien explica lo que acontecerá en el futuro a su nieta, algo que sucede en muchos más libros que hablan de la muerte ajena. Otros títulos prefieren centrarse en la muerte propia, como es el caso de Dos alas, un libro de Bellemo y Di Giorgio que aduce una bella metáfora sobre este hecho en el que un anciano encuentra creciendo en el patio de casa las alas que sembró durante la infancia, un recordatorio del ciclo vital que necesita una concienciación personal. Es curioso como el ser humano explica la muerte pues no hay sólo una explicación, sino múltiples facetas de una realidad que nos alcanza a todos sin excepción. Cada libro tiene la suya y eso da para un estudio discursivo pormenorizado 3. Mil formas de morir Aunque hay montones de formas de morir, las causas de muerte en la mayor parte de los libros que se recogen en este monográfico tienen que ver con tres: la vejez, la enfermedad (estás se llevan el premio gordo) o la muerte accidental (muy pocas). Son los personajes de avanzada edad quienes fallecen al lado de sus nietos o de niños con los que establecen una relación estrecha. El mejor truco del abuelo de Dwight Holden y Chesworth es uno de esos libros que habla de la muerte desde el punto de vista del cáncer, una de las enfermedades con más riesgo de mortalidad de nuestros días. La nieta vive el proceso conforme se desarrolla y va haciéndose a la idea del desenlace final, buscando la cara más optimista con la que recordar al anciano. Otro título excepcional es Inés Azul, un álbum de los Pablos (Albo y Auladell) en el que se explica la pérdida de un amigo por una dura enfermedad. En la narración se entremezclan descripciones de la sintomatología y metáforas que forman parte del lento proceso que experimenta la protagonista, unas veces desde el desconocimiento, otras desde la lucidez infantil. Mención aparte merece el Estirar la pata (o como envejecemos) de la querida Babette Cole en el que desde el desenfado y con una sonrisa se nos presenta el deterioro humano. Una mirada que agradece el ojo humano y que alguien debería rescatar en estos tiempos de hipersensibilización. Así mismo les recomiendo un álbum informativo que me chifla, pues el Libro de las muertes extraordinarias de Cecilia Ruiz recoge algunas de las muertes en circunstancias extrañas más llamativas que he leído. No se lo pierdan pues es el único libro que complementa a esas tres causas que prevalecen en este tanato-artículo. Termino este tema aludiendo advirtiendo que son pocas, casi inexistentes, las alusiones a las muertes por suicidio en la Literatura Infantil, algo que no es de extrañar pues si la muerte en sí misma ya es un tabú, más lo es todavía quitarse la vida voluntariamente. Tendremos que ejercitarnos pues… 4. Ritos funerarios La de los ritos funerarios es una de las temáticas menos presentes en los libros para niños. Puede deberse a que muchos la consideran la parte más dramática del duelo, pues toca deshacerse del cadáver y pronunciar la palabra “adiós”. En esta categoría quiero centrarme en tres libros que, aunque un tanto diferentes, recogen los pormenores de un enterramiento. El primero es ¡¿Cómo es posible?! La historia de Elvis de Schössow, un libro que me encanta y que siempre despierta susceptibilidades en los adultos por el tratamiento un tanto sui generis de las emociones. El cortejo fúnebre es un cuadro, hay cierta banalización de la muerte y se busca el consuelo en mitad de una merienda. Yo encuentro mucho humor y humanidad en este libro, pues muchos de los entierros a los que he asistido se parecen más al “Sálvame” que a un duelo colectivo. El segundo es El oso y el gato salvaje, un libro hermosísimo de Yumoto y Sakaï, un libro liviano pero intenso. Todo adulto que lo lee se ve envuelto en una atmósfera triste y sosegada. Quizá por sus ilustraciones desdibujadas, quizá por tratar ese momento con una intimidad extrema tiene una menor aceptación que el primero entre los escolares. Por último no podía faltar Una casa para el abuelo el álbum de Toro y Ferrer que en clave poética y no exento de humor, nos cuenta como una familia busca un lugar para enterrar al patriarca, una bonita casa en la que él se encuentre a gusto y que al mismo tiempo este cerca de ellos. Delicioso. Seguramente existan libros sobre esta temática en otras latitudes en las que se pueda contemplar una incineración u otro tipo de rito fúnebre, pero todos los que conozco se limitan a representar un entierro a la usanza, un hecho importante ya que nos ayuda a sentir la situación más cercana y nos identificamos con ella. 5. ¿Qué hay después de la muerte? Son muchos los libros que hablan del paraíso, de qué hay al otro lado, de lo que nos espera después de la muerte. Ese desconocimiento (todavía nadie ha vuelto de ese lugar posterior) facilita la labor de la fantasía, un hecho inspirador para el afán creador de escritores e ilustradores. Es así como se crean mundos paralelos, visiones complejas y diferentes sobre ese después. Estimulan nuestra imaginación para hacer más llevadera la espera, nos invitan a soñar y a elegir en vida la misma muerte. Títulos como Regaliz de Van Ommen o Paraíso de Bruno Gilbert dejan volar las mentes infantiles, tanto de los protagonistas, como las de sus lectores, para sacar las cosas de quicio y construir lugares en los que vivir después de fallecer. Uno toma el regaliz como hilo conductor, mientras que el otro es un ejercicio excepcional de infografía. Ambas son fantásticas. Me gustaría llamar la atención en este apartado sobre los supervivientes y sus necesidades, pues generalmente los que se quedan a este lado necesitan imaginarse el otro, pues hay muertes que necesitan un mundo mejor. De esta manera se pergeñan títulos como Paisaje de amor, un hermoso álbum de Jimmy Liao donde la vida y la muerte se entremezclan en las escenas de una historia donde dos enamorados son separados por un accidente mortal. No es el único álbum que utiliza este mismo tipo de recurso, pues El ángel del abuelo de Bauer o La caricia de la mariposa de Voltz se hacen eco de él desde el humor infantil. 6. Duelo y tributo al fallecido Para mi gusto son los libros más complejos sobre la muerte, pues cada fallecimiento se rodea de unas circunstancias particulares que son difíciles de explicar al lector. Conectar unos sentimientos propios con otros ajenos es bastante difícil, tanto que podría parecerse a un ejercicio de exorcismo. Equilibrar esa mezcla de sinceridad y emociones es una ardua tarea, sobre todo si queremos conseguir una narración que no caiga en sentimentalismos baratos. Si tuviera que quedarme con uno de entre todos los que traigo hoy a esta casa de monstruos, ese sería El libro triste de Rosen y Blake. No sólo porque le tengo mucho cariño y me haya acompañado en momentos muy difíciles, sino porque es un libro que tiene un sabor especial. Es una vorágine de sensaciones que conectan con esas turbulencias personales del duelo. La negación, la ira, la decepción, la depresión, el dolor… Esta todo en las palabras sinceras de Rosen, en las maravillosas ilustraciones de Blake. Es un libro en el que la mayoría nos vemos reflejados y logra conmovernos. Existen otros libros que, a pesar de tratar el duelo, prefieren centrarse en homenajear al fallecido, es decir, a ensalzar una vida que ha tenido relación con otras vidas. Hablar de sus bondades y maldades, de sus manías y de los momentos compartidos. Esa es la línea de títulos como Gracias, Tejón de Varley, un libro en forma de epitafio. Por último, referirme a un título especial sobre este tema, La mujer de la guarda, de Sara Bertrand y Alejandra Acosta. Un texto sumamente poético en el que la muerte de la madre con la subsecuente perdida de esos años felices, son el punto de partida para ofrecer relato complejo y agitado sobre el duelo infantil. 7. La muerte en su ciclo Todos sabemos que sin vida no puede haber muerte. Un ciclo que empieza y acaba una y otra vez y del que debemos ser conscientes. Si no somos capaces de interiorizar este concepto, una angustia vital se puede adueñar de la razón en cualquier momento y sacarnos de quicio. Cuánto antes sepamos asimilar que toda vida tiene un final, mejor. Es por ello que muchos de los libros en los que se enmarca la muerte prefieren presentarla como la parte de un todo en el que somos grandes partícipes. En muchos casos estos libros son un elogio a la vida, como es el caso de Como todo lo que nace de Schamp y Brami, que se interna en el simbolismo y las metáforas. También pueden ser como el Es así de Paloma Valdivia, una puesta de largo más desenfadada y simpática pero con igual hondura y colorido (siempre me ha llamado la atención ese color de rosa que desprende). Vitalista pero nada despreocupado. Un buen ejemplo de este ciclo de vida y muerte se presenta en el conocido El hilo de la vida de Cali y Bloch, donde tomando como recurso un hilo rojo se nos representa una de las escenas más impactantes sobre la muerte y que tiene un peso narrativo crucial en la historia, pues si se prescindiese de ella, ese ciclo se desvanecería. Curiosamente, el Soy la vida / Soy la muerte de Helland Larsen y Schneider, se nos presenta a modo de dúo de libros, es decir, vida y muerte son independientes aunque quedar interrelacionadas mediante una puesta en escena parecida, dos historias similares con ilustraciones coloristas (¿No les recuerdan a ciertos yokai japoneses?). 8. La muerte testimonial La muerte está presente en muchos libros. En libros sobre flores, en libros que se sitúan en mitad de la tormenta, en libros donde las preguntas son las protagonistas… Es curioso como la literatura recurre una y otra vez a este tema, cómo se acuerda de la muerte cuando parece que no viene a cuento. Quizá sea un recurso narrativo para darle intensidad al discurso o quizá un golpe de efecto para todos los sentimentales. El caso es que necesitamos ese testimonio de nuestra efímera existencia en muchos de los álbumes que han trascendido en la LIJ. Epílogo… Como a estas alturas de la película más de uno estará deseando mi muerte (creo que es el post más largo “ever”), voy a cerrar el chiringuito hasta nuevo aviso (la semana que viene, cuando todos volvamos de este largo fin de semana) y no les molestaré mientras honran a sus muertos… Aunque les seré sincero: soy más partidario de regalar el cariño en vida. … Y una bibliografía a considerar Aunque han ido viendo ilustraciones de algunos de estos libros infantiles, he creído oportuno adjuntar un listado de títulos que tratan la muerte, no sin hacer antes un par de consideraciones. A pesar de que la muerte es un tema universal y se trata en multitud de obras, se clasifiquen estas por edades o no, ya saben que mi especialidad son los álbumes y por tanto me he centrado en esta tipología de libros. Bien porque la lectura del álbum debido a sus características emergentes, puede servir tanto a mayores, como a pequeños, o bien porque quizá sean las obras más útiles a la hora de tratar este tema en la primera infancia, una edad en la que la muerte, sus causas y consecuencias pueden ser un tema interesante, delicado o apasionante (elijan su adjetivo). En esta bibliografía he incluido casi todos los libros que conozco en castellano sobre este tema sin hacer distinción entre ficción y no ficción (que cada uno lea los que quiera), aunque como es habitual en mis monográficos y selecciones incluyo tres estrellas (***) en aquellas obras que me parecen excepcionales o simplemente me encantan.
