After I've finished a project, I usually struggle trying to decide what to sew next. After I finished the Hawaiian baby quilt, I was having trouble deciding what I wanted to work on next. When I couldn't make up my mind I decided to work on two projects at the same time. That turned out to be a great idea. I recently saw a top on line that I thought was adorable and very doable. So I decided I was going to try to make something similar to that top. I had also started some blocks that are like a trip around the world, from Bonnie's website so I figured I might as well pull out those blocks as well. The advantage of doing that was that for each piece of fabric that I pulled out of my stash I was able to cut it into pieces to use for two or even three projects at once. So I did not have to put the rest of the fabric back into my stash. I used up whatever piece I pulled out. This is the block from Bonnie's website: These blocks recall require six strips that are 2 1/2 inches wide and 16 inches long. The other blocks that I decided to work on take different size pieces but I was still able to use up the scrap piece that I pulled from. Here is one block: This block required a 4-1/2 inch square for the center, four strips that are 1-1/2" wide and four squares that are 2 1/2 inches square. This block uses lights and darks. So I would cut a 2 1/2 inch strip for the trip around the world and then I would cut 4-1/2 inch square and 2 1/2 inch squares and 1-1/2 inch strips which I would use in other blocks. Here are the blocks I finished the other day: The blocks finish at 6 inches. I didn't clear a lot of space in my stash but it felt good not putting fabric back into the stash but rather I was able to use it up. So that is my brilliant thought for the day.

My husband and I got a new calling! Primary CTR 4 Class. We are really excited. I went to school to become a teacher, so I like to make lessons my own. So that's what I hope to do with the church manual lessons. I hope you can take some of the ideas I have found an make the lesson your own! Click on the link below to see the lesson I have put together. Lesson 26 and Prep Materials (This contains a lesson as well as illustrations and activities to go along with the lesson. It is also geared toward the younger kids.) Special thanks to LDS Notebooking Pages for the puzzle idea.

It is so exciting to me when my artwork can bless people in places I may never have an opportunity to even visit. My favorite comment ever received here on this blog was a little message from Guatamala telling me that the Sister Missionaries there were using my art to set up a new primary full of kids who had never had the experience before. (!) I feel so blessed to have a very small part in that. The problem with trying to create something for a world wide church is that it's difficult to account for every beautiful difference and situation in my art. Let's face it, I have lived my entire life in Utah. There is not a whole lot of diversity here. I even served my mission in New York. So I don't know any other languages either. I sincerely want my artwork to work for all of our heavenly father's children, but I'm limited in my ability to do that. That's why I've made a few different versions of this poster. One that is ready to print if you want it that way, One that you can write your own language on, and one that you can color if you'd like. Hopefully one of these versions will be useful to you in whatever way you need it. This poster was created as 11x14 which is a standard print size at Costco, Sam's Club, etc. (I think it costs around $3) But you can always adjust the size bigger or smaller.

This blindfolded maze game teaches obedience to children. My kids loved playing this game, wanting to try completing the maze over and over again. Teaching through games speaks volumes to kids. The concepts resonate with them because kids learn through play. Some people are questioning whether obedience is outdated. They don’t want their children being...Read More

A little over a year ago I was a Primary teacher in my church. When the Bishop and his Councilors gave me and my husband the call I was actually rather stunned and I don't remember exactly what I said but it was something along the lines of "Have you seen my husband?" since he's not really the super kid friendly image, don't get me wrong, he's a wonderful dad and all and he's great with teenagers but when I was a Nursery teacher (over the 18 month olds to the 3 year olds) I had him come help me one day and he literally stood there for most of the time having no idea what to do being surrounded by small children. Before I could question further though, one of the Councilors brought up how it was a class of all boys around 6-7 years old, and some of them were a bit um, hard to handle. It all became clear then as my husband worked at a boys home and got his first bachelor degree in recreational management and youth program and knew a lot about how to handle rougher kids. Yep, my husband became the Primary bouncer. :) He does have a slightly Harley Davidson look to him since he is 6'2" and has long blonde hair and a mustache and goatee. And yes it was a rough class - I would come home from church exhausted. I have kids, and my boy is quite the handful himself. The biggest issue with this class was there was more than one hard to handle kid and they were hard to handle in different ways. We had a very aggressive boy who acted up constantly so most of the time Ian held him on his lap while the boy scratched his arms up. There were a few times I tried to hold him - boy was that crazy; got some nice bruises that day. Then there was a boy who was passive aggressive. If he acted up to the point I had to put him on my lap, he would become as limp as a rag doll and just kind of lay there not caring. There was a boy that was so fun, we'd ask a question about God or the scriptures and he'd raise his hand and give an answer like "Did you know you can tell a Whales age by his earwax?" Or he'd talk about dinosaurs since he knew all sorts of official names and such. We also had a boy that didn't talk. He had a literal condition where he couldn't talk to anyone besides family and a few friends. Happily he overcame that and talks a lot more to everyone now but it was a very interesting mix indeed. Despite the craziness of it all, I did become attached to the boys and it's nice seeing them in the halls every now and then and some of them seem to still like me. Really they are all great boys, it was just combining them all (I hear the voice of Captain Planet in my head, "By our powers combined" LOL) and trying to get them to sit still quietly through sharing time and then sit for a lesson in a teeny tiny room was not the easiest task in the world. The really interesting thing too is it seemed to be the perfect thing to have us be their teacher - when it came time for the Primary program where the kids are all up front during the main sacrament meeting (that's 1 hour and 15 minutes sitting away from their parents, up in front for all to see, and in these lovely rocky squeaky chairs too) our class was the most well behaved. Other classes had kids rocking their chairs a bunch or talking or poking each other. Our boys all sat like angels. Sure they didn't really sing - we told them that was fine, just to move their mouths to look like they sang - but they did their parts and were really great. It probably was also due to my husband promising to give them a whole candy bar if they were good - yes bribery works some times ;) So how does this all tie in to the paper CTR rings? Some of you may even be wondering what a CTR ring is in the first place - long story short, it stands for Choose The Right and to learn more about my religion you can go here. For the Primary classes, there are manuals with lessons in them. One of the lessons I was preparing for our rambunctious boys talked about the kids having a CTR ring. I thought about this and how 1. we didn't really have the funds to get all the boys a ring, 2. a small thing like that is pretty easy for a young kid to loose and 3. wouldn't it be nice to have something we could use for the lesson that wouldn't be expensive and would be ok if it got lost or broken or if the kids didn't really care for it after 10 minutes? And so - I created a paper CTR ring! Quick and easy, kid size, colorable, cheap, and no big worry about the kids loosing them/taking good care of them the way you would with a ring you bought. Without further adieu and rambling, here are the templates and pictures of how to assemble the rings - this is one of the few post that I do kind of hope people share and freely enjoy. Print out your ring. It's best to print it on thicker paper such as cardstock but it also works on plain paper. Cut out all around and then cut where there's the dark line - but DON'T cut all the way through. You can see in the picture above how it's only cut half way where the dark line ends. This next part is a little tricky, I hope my explanation and the pictures come out clear enough for you to understand. You want to twist the paper around so the two halves of the CTR shield are close to each other and so the slits you cut are next to each other and then the two halves should slide together. Here you can see the two halves starting to slide together. Here's a closeup of the intersection. Here's a closeup of the inside. I put a piece of scotch tape on the inside where the two sides meet to help hold it all together. You can also put tape on the front if it's not sitting the way you want. As you can see, they come out a bit small four adult fingers, but they work great for little fingers. Perfect! The kids really loved them and they fit their little fingers really nicely. The kids also liked being able to color them with whatever colors they wanted. This is a whole sheet of them - I was able to fit 7 to a sheet. I hope you can copy and print this image ok and have it come through clearly. I can't figure out a way to attach a pdf of it so it's to the right proportion and all. But if nothing else you can copy that first image which is only one ring but it's nice and big so it should come through clearly.

To help remind the children to be reverent in primary last year our primary president made a cute sign, I can't remember exactly where she got the idea. I was telling my sister-in-law about it and she wanted a copy. So here is what I came up with. Just print it off on cardstock, cut out and glue or paste onto a tongue depressor/craft stick. How to use it: Introduce it to the children, explaining what each finger/picture mean (eye: eyes looking up front, arms folded: keep hands to self/fold arms, lips: mouths closed/no talking, ear: Ears ready to listen, shoes: feet still and on ground). Explain that when the sign is raised then they need to do those things, the sames goes with when a leader raises their hand in a five. The goal is for the leader to be able to hold their own hand up and the children quiet down and be reverent. I think we reminded the children what the five things were with the sign for about a month or two. Then we would just use our hand and it works great! * Tip for printing: click on image and print. Works best if you reduce margins *
My husband, who by the way is a great support to me and my calling and sings his BIG ol’ heart out in Primary every Sunday, teaches the CTR 4 class this year. One day as I was perusing through his “Primary 2: Choose the Right A” manual for the year I came upon this black and white CTR game board in lesson 14. Well, that just turned on the light bulb in my head with the whole CTR theme for this year and of course I thought I would have to somehow implement this into singing time. The game is a take off from the game Chutes and Ladders. The color person in me just did not like the plain ol’ black and white version, so I decided to recreate it in living color. I printed it out in a poster format in Adobe Reader by selecting in my print options “Tile all pages” under “Page Scaling”. I’m a Mac person so this is how it works for me, but I would imagine Adobe Reader should have the same print option for the PC version. Just to give you an idea, below is an image of the print screen so you can see where the option is for doing a poster. Make sure you have the box checked for “Cut Marks”. That will help you know where to cut off the excess edges. I printed it at 250%, which printed it out on 9 pages and which gave me about a poster board size game board. Depending on your printer, you may have to adjust the percentage until you get the size you want. You can print it smaller or larger depending on your preference. I printed mine on cardstock, cut off the edges and then butted them up to each other and taped them together on the backside using packaging tape. This way it was sturdy for my liking yet I could fold it up. You could print on paper and mount on poster board or just use paper if you prefer. Print Screen ITEMS NEEDED TO PLAY THE GAME: CTR Game Board 1-2 Magnetic Game Tokens Dice or Spinner (I picked up a set of 2.5" sized dice from the Dollar Tree store.) CTR Sticks or CTR Game Cards or Slips of paper with questions & Container Key Sheet for Questions (Word docx or PDF) Song Visual Aids (optional) Magnets PREPARATION: Make the CTR Game Board as mentioned above. Prepare questions by writing them on the back of the laminated CTR Shields on the stick (found here in this post) or just make the CTR Shields without the stick for cards by using either a dry erase marker (may rub off if handled too much) or those wet erase markers like Expo Vis-à-Vis markers that you use to write on transparencies (won’t rub off easily but writing can be cleaned off with a damp paper towel or cloth.) I’m planning on just numbering the back of the sticks and referring to my question key sheet to ask the questions. More simple. Place the sticks in a container to pick from. If you have already made and used the CTR sticks for other activities, this is another way to reuse something you already have by using them for the children to pick the questions from. If you don’t have or want to use the CTR Sticks/Shields, you could write or print and cut out the questions and place them in a container to choose from. HOW TO PLAY THE GAME: I don’t split into teams for my JR since they are too young to handle competition, but I do on a rare occasion for my SR. They are able to handle and do enjoy a friendly competition once in a while. I have a lot of boys and that just seems to work for them in keeping their interest. Take turns having a child come up and pick one of the CTR questions for the group/team to answer. After they answer the question, let the person who answered the question correctly roll the dice to see how many spaces to move, sing the song if applicable. If they don’t know the answer, give them a chance to discover the answer while the Primary sings the song and then let them answer after singing the song. If they give the correct answer before you sing the song, tell them we’ll sing the song to check and see if they got the answer right. Ohhhhh, we music leaders have tricks up our sleeves to get that singing in one-way or the other. If they land on a CTR shield with a ladder, they get to move their game token up to the space at the top of the ladder. If they land on a Wrong Choice space, they slide down to the space at the end of the slide or chute. Obviously, they win when they reach the end at the Big CTR space. CTR Poster I plan on starting with having them roll one die each turn and adding a second one if needed to help speed the movement on the game so we hopefully can finish the game before the time is up. Some questions are WRONG CHOICES! and they will have to roll the dice to see how many spaces they have to move backwards. Some questions are not song questions so the team has a chance to answer it, if they can’t, the other team has a chance to answer and take the move. The game board and questions files are attached. The links are above in the “Items needed to play the game” section. I’ve chosen songs to sing that I would like to review with my Primary. Feel free to adapt to the songs and questions you may want to review with your Primary. Hope you have fun playingChoose the Right game.
