If you enjoy a fiber craft like knitting, spinning, crocheting, or weaving; then this article is for you. The reason measuring micron count matters is because micron count can be a good approximation for softness. A smaller micron count means the fibers are thinner and that often leads to a softer yarn. If you can’t […]

Images via Koron007 Centuries ago, fabric was a rare and precious commodity only the wealthy could afford. So people treasured old and worn-out pieces of clothing to recycle and reuse in order to make new clothes. Thus the sakiori was born. Sakiori comes from the word "saki" which means to tear up or rip and "ori" which means weave. Recycling old fabric remnants into sakiori weavings follows the Japanese indispensable concept of “mottainai” or not wasting precious cloth that can prolong the fabric’s useful life through recycling and reuse. Weaving all these remnants of fabric was immensely hard work back then, however very rewarding and worth the effort as clothing made from repurposed cotton was vastly warmer, softer, and more durable than the rough linens that could be made from Japan’s natural fibers. Sakiori was mostly used to make rugs and covers, but also clothes - mostly jackets and vests. Today, the technique is experiencing a resurgence as a "green", ethical and economical art form. It is easy to limit your record keeping to numbers. But it is when you keep physical records – samples and swatches – that the real fun begins.

Most of us keep notes of some kind, but it can still be a challenge to capture our spinning inspiration and thoughts in a way that can be put on paper.
A start in my handspun and hand-dyed Spicery Shetland. Next up is this patchwork handspun. I'm working this top down and will do a slow merge from one colorway to the next. I'll use maybe 4 colorways before I'm done. I have them all laid out on the guest) bed and will decide which is next when the time comes. I foresee hassle in getting all the merges to match on body and arms without running short on a color on one of them.

Ricorumi Spin Spin DK yarn review
Revisit some of Priscilla's many Spin Off articles published across three decades.
I beamed on the warp this morning. This is the picture from the front of the loom showing the weighted warps. At this point I had only about six more inches to wind on. The white strings hanging from the top of the loom have loops in the bottom. Through these loops I thread my floating selvedges so that they raise and lower more easily the way I want them to. I now have the warp ends removed from the top of the loom and thrown the the heddle frames. I am reweighting them so that I can easily get the lease sticks moved up close to the heddles in preparation for threading. The raddle is still sitting on the back of the loom. I will not remove it until I am done threading and sleying. If then.
This is how the shawl looks after completing the second chart. As you can see, I've just started spinning up the next ot of singles on my Golding antique rose.

I've been visiting Souq Waqif here in Doha regularly, particularly the small arcade where Qatari women sell rugs and other woven textiles. There is so much to see that I'm overwhelmed each time. I've been focused on the women's spinning and weaving, obvious uses of string that are most interesting to me, and I've been gratified to see both in action. However, I keep noticing how often they are making different types of string for different uses, and how easily a strong bit of rope is simply accomplished from the bits at hand. This is second nature for a nomadic people who have lived in tents and herded animals in the desert for centuries. Camel leads and hobbles, reins, straps and saddle belts have been handcrafted as part of daily existence, along with the walls of the tent, the ropes for securing them, and all kinds of bags and rugs. As a result, there is a huge variety of techniques, with string that is braided, wrapped, woven, wound, twisted, and very often tasselled, depending on its intended use. Here, she is about to put her palms together against that double strand of two-ply yarn, and twist it smoothly into a cabled length to use as a tie. Each tie takes only a few seconds of fluid motion. I had been pleased to find evidence of handspun yarn in the souq, but it's clear that this is only one among many ways these women have of creating the things they have traditionally needed. This arcade is filled with countless other examples of useful string, colorful and elegant, widening my appreciation for Bedouin craftswomen and their timeless knowledge. Meanwhile, my own experiments with string continue.

By Lois Weaverwww.zozofiberarts.comThis cowl was a result of an escape to my local coffee shop, Stellar Coffee Company (thus the name), after a stressful week in my studio. I grabbed the squares I’d woven from one ball of Tempo and my tapestry needle and the rest is history.Finished size: 30 inches end to end, 15 inches folded. This cowl works up very quickly and uses just one ball of the fabulous S. Charles “Tempo” yarn. The shifting of colors is what makes it so effective to work with.
