Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss painter, 1853-1918) Landschaft bei Caux mit aufsteigenden Wolken - 1917 Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) was born in Berne, the eldest of 6 children. By the time Hodler was 8, he had lost his father & 2 younger brothers to tuberculosis. His mother remarried but died of tuberculosis in 1867, when he was 14. Eventually the disease killed all of Hodler's remaining siblings, instilling in the artist a powerful consciousness of mortality. Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss painter, 1853-1918) Bildnis Madame de R. - 1898Before he was 10, Hodler received training in decorative painting from his stepfather, & was then sent to Thun to apprentice with a local painter, Ferdinand Sommer. Hodler's earliest works were conventional landscapes, which he sold in shops & to tourists. In 1871, at the age of 18, he traveled on foot to Geneva to start a career as a painter of landscapes, figures, & portraits.Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss painter, 1853-1918) Abendnebel am Thunersee - 1908As time passed, Hodler's work took on an expressionist aspect with strongly colored & geometrical figures. Landscapes were pared down to essentials, sometimes consisting of a jagged wedge of land between water & sky.Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss painter, 1853-1918) Portrait of a Woman 1907In 1908, he met Valentine Godé-Darel, who became his mistress. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1913, & the many hours Hodler spent by her bedside resulted in a remarkable series of paintings documenting her decline. Her death in January 1915, affected Hodler greatly. Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss painter, 1853-1918) Berggipfel am Morgen - c 1915In 1914, he condemned the German atrocities conducted using artillery at Rheims. In retaliation for this, German art museums excluded Hodler's work. Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss painter, 1853-1918) Bildnis Gertrud Müller - c 1912In his final years, Hodler occupied himself with a series of about 20 introspective self-portraits dating from 1916. By late 1917 his declining health led him to thoughts of suicide. He died on May 19, 1918 in Geneva. i am tres delighted with my $12 thrift store find of last friday. after bringing her home, i gave her a clean and then i popped her on. i noted the fit was tres peachy everywhere except a little bit loosey goosey on the shoulders. fret not i said to myself, nothing a little natty gathering cannot put right after some consideration i decided a cluster of pins would be most fitting for her granny chic splendor. rustling around my fabby fav pins i came up with three 1: a lovely diamante number sent from across the border from Lynn Dearie and Diana Dearie (hello hello!) 2: a little vintage daisy picked up at Spitalfield Market whilst on a pottle with my granny chic partner in crime, Rachelle and 3: a tiny vintage mosaic found at a vintage fair whilst visiting my folks last year to celebrate their 50 years of wedded bliss i wore my peachy perfect coat yesterday whilst going over the hill and across the valley to gather yarn, photo courtesy of Anna from Tolt Yarn and Wool i noted upon my return, my newly found perfectly peachy 'old coat' did wonders for making a monday into 'oh so much more than just a monday'

The sideways shawl, or scarf is a popular knitting pattern. It starts with only a handful of cast-on stitches,
General info: This pattern is property of Gina Mastrianni, organization Gina Making Art, and intended for your personal use only. The pattern can not be shared and garments can not be made from the pattern for resale. Thank you for supporting my small business and making it possible to share my designs with you! Check out other examples and please tag your own projects with: #Thebalconyshorts on Instagram @gina.making.art Garment Construction The shorts are worked in 5 main steps. First, the left panel is knit flat and includes the left front and left back of the shorts. Second, the right panel is knit flat and includes the right front and right back of the shorts. Third, the crotch seams are hand seamed shut with a tapestry needle. Fourth, stitches are picked up for the waistband and knit in the round. Lastly, elastic is folded into the waistband and crocheted shut. Techniques expected to be understood: long tail cast on, knit, purl, bind off, vertical invisible hand seaming (including slopes), pick up stitches, crocheting surface slip stitches, sewing an elastic band together. These shorts are relatively simple, but include purl stitches 50% of the time. You’ve been warned! Fit: These shorts are intended to fit loose like basketball shorts or sweatpants shorts. They can be worn casually or dressed up! Sizes are based off of Ysolda´s Free Women’s Sizing Chart with a range from Waist 26 - 54 “ & Hips 34 - 62 “ Garment Waist ease: 9.5” (24cm) of positive ease, except 5X size: 9” (22.8cm) and XS: 9.75” (24.8cm) Garment Leg opening ease: 7.5 (7, 7.75, 7.5, 7.5, 9.25, 9.5, 9.5, 10)“ of positive ease 19.1 ( 17.8, 19.7, 19.1, 19.1, 23.5, 24.1, 24.1, 25.4) cm Garment Full hip ease: 8.5 (10, 11, 10.25, 9.75, 10.5, 11, 8.5, 9.5)“ positive ease 21.6 (25.4, 27.9, 26, 24.8, 26.7, 27.9, 21.6, 24) cm Designer notes: I used the same size needles for ribbing and stockinette and achieved the same gauge, as did most of my test knitters. However, please consider using your smaller needles if your ribbing is generally much looser than your stockinette! Make a test swatch ahead of time to see if you need to use a smaller needle size for ribbing. Personal opinion in choosing a size: Because the shorts are intended to be so loose, many of the testers technically fit into two sizes and weren’t sure if they should size up or down. I suggest measuring your hips at your fullest hip and your waist at about your belly button. This can help to maintain a more loose fit.
