Looking for an easy Chinese New Year Craft that you can make with kids of all ages? Try making these paper chain dragons. Can't draw? Don't worry! Download the free printable below and you'll be making tons of dancing paper dragons in no time! How to Make Chinese New Year Paper Chain Dragons How to Make Paper Chain Dragons: 1. Print out and color this paper chain dragon printable here. (Note: The printable is free for download. If you're logged in at a school, sometimes your administrator will not allow you to download items from webpages. To get around that, simply log into your personal email account at home and try downloading the printable. Then you should be able to get it.) Then, cut out the pieces. (The template for the strips was hard for my tiny preschooler's hands to curl. So I extended it a bit if you're working with younger children. 2. Cut out strips of paper for your paper chains. (We traced construction paper, but to make this a recycled craft, just trace old newspaper or magazines!) 3. Staple your face onto a strip. 4. Then, proceed to make your paper chains. (Staple the legs to pieces as you make them.) When you're finished, staple your tail onto the end. We made two- one was made from 9 pieces and the other was out of 11 pieces. But I saw this really neat version on the Frugal Handmade that was super long! She also made her face facing sideways, which makes it great for hanging up as decoration.) 8 More Awesome Chinese New Years Crafts! Craft activity for kids in decorating fans for Chinese New Year
Ready for a fun Chinese New Year Craft? Chinese New Year is one of those really fun holidays that I enjoyed celebrating as a kid. Yummy food, wearing new clothes, red envelopes filled with money, and watching cool dragon and lion dancing? Come on, what's not to love? Since the holiday is just around the corner, I showed Chuck some lion dancing videos (Youtube to the rescue!) and then thought it'd be fun if we did some dragon crafts together: Two Chinese New Year Dragon Crafts Little background about me- Growing up I always felt like a "twinkie." Yellow on the outside, white on the inside. You see, I looked Asian, but I didn't always feel that way. Now that Chuck's getting a bit older, hubby and I are trying to figure out how two twinkies like us pass down their cultural traditions. (Ehh... it's a work in progress....) This craft is one way that we're trying to pass down our tradition. And, in the interest of full disclosure, Chuck really enjoyed making the handprint dragon.... but he wasn't too keen on coloring my paper bag dragon pieces. However, once I colored and glued everything down for him, he enjoyed playing with it like a puppet. So, do you wanna see how we made these two dragons? (I've got templates too! Ooh la la!) Keep on reading! (And if you like this craft, definitely check out this dancing Chinese Dragon Puppet. It actually dances and is made from recycled materials!) This post contains affiliate links. She made lovely dragon scales by simply tracing her children's hands onto construction paper. So if you like that idea better, check her blog out! 1. Have your child paint pieces of paper. 2. Once the paint dries, trace handprints onto your piece of paper and cut them out. (We used 9 or 10 hand prints.) 3. Glue them like scales to your body piece. 4. Color in your head, claw, and tail pieces. (I drew them onto watercolor paper, so we painted them with watercolors.) 5. Cut them out and then glue them onto your body. You're done! Happy belated Chinese New Year! This past week I visited my son's classroom and did some Chinese New Year themed crafts with his friends. I'd love to claim today's craft as my own because it's so awesome. But, I can't take any credit. My son actually made it in his class. (The teacher found the idea in The MailBox and graciously allowed me to share it here.) Isn't it super neat? Awesome New Year's Dragon Kite Puppets! This post contains affiliate links. This means I make a small portion off of any purchases made through the links at no additional cost to you. Thank you for the grocery money! For my full disclosure policy, click here. My son made this one in class, so I'll just show you what it looks like so you can make it too. The body of the dragon was cut out from a red envelope, but you can also use red paper. They folded down the face portion and drew scales and a face on one side. (Also, you'll notice they used a bit of glitter to give it a bit more pizazz.) This is what the dragon looks like with the face folded over. The popsicle stick is glued to the back of the folded over face. Colorful tissue paper strips were also glued on. The flutter really prettily when the dragon flies around. And here's how you hold your puppet/ kite! I hope you have fun trying out this Chinese New Year craft with your kiddos. http://www.makingbooks.com/step.shtml My husband and I went to Korea last month where I was part of the Seungnam International Book Art Fair. I exhibited some of the Spirit Books and gave a coupleof workshops to children. We were welcomed with wonderful hospitality and had a chance to make friends from Korea and around the world. Our trip was only six days with two of them in airports and in the air so it took us a while to recover after our return home. I'll be posting information about the trip sometime soon. I always like to show some sample ways of using the books I make in workshops. Here's a book that I took to Korea. The first page says counting book followed by the numbers from one to nine. I used five sheets of 4.25" x 11" colored copy paper (standard size sheets cut in half vertically). The step book works great for a counting book as the page revealed after lifting each step gets larger as you move along the book. For a variation, you can bind it using the stick and elastic technique instead of yarn. http://www.makingbooks.com/elastic.shtml Links Numbers in Different Languages A counting book can be an entry into a different culture. I'm planning on making a larger counting book with the following: 1 palace (we visited Gyeongbokgung (Gyeongbok Palace), 2 chopsticks (Korean chopsticks are made of stainless steel), 3 azalea blossoms (I was introduced to one of Korea's most famous poems by its translator David R. McCann who is the brother of a friend from the Children's Museum), 4 handmade brushes (I bought a beautiful one in a shop in Insadong in Seoul), 5 birds (as far as I can tell the common birds we saw and loved were black-billed magpies), 6 children playing badminton (we saw lots in the park on the weekend), 7 bowls of kimchi (the fermented cabbage dish is served at every meal), 8 pairs of slippers (there were slippers in the hotel room, outside the dining room in a restaurant, and in bins at the airport where we had to take off our shoes), 9 Dunkin Donuts coffees (we were surprised to see containers of Dunkin Donuts coffee arrive at the exhibition hall especially when we have friends in the western US who miss them terribly) Wikipedia has well organized sets of numbers from one to ten in different languages. Korean Numbers There are two kinds of numbers in Korean: pure Korean numbers and Sino-Korean numbers. The numbers in the Counting Book above are Sino-Korean numbers. Sino-Korean Numbers Pronunciation: 1= il 2= ee 3= sam 4= sa 5= oh 6= yook 7= chil 8= pal 9= goo 10= ship You can hear them and then test yourself with a concentration game here. Korean Number Song You may find this cute or irritating but it does go through the Korean numbers from one to ten.
