Chinese New Year 2015 is the Year of the Sheep and here is the perfect writing prompt craft to help your students celebrate. You will find 5 sheep prompts that you can print “as is” and the student will color the animal and write on the topic. The first topic asks the student to imagine being the animal, the second topic asks the student to imagine having one of the animal’s traits, the next prompt is for students who have seen the animal at a farm, the next prompt asks the students to describe climbing like a wild sheep, the next prompt states that 2015 is the Year of the Sheep, and the last topic lists the letter of the alphabet that corresponds with the animal. Use this prompt for students to list additional words that begin with the same letter, assign your own topic, or let students come up with their own topic. You can also use the 28 Word Wall Words about the Chinese New Year at the end of the packet. Next, you will find the same topics formatted for a page topper. If you choose these prompts, add the animal image after those prompts and the decorations if you wish. You can either print these animal page toppers on colored paper or ask your students to color or paint them. The next three items for are graphic organizers to help with the writing process. You will find a clustering/web word organizer, a can/have/need chart, and a KWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) chart. Next--The last pages include 28 Word Wall words about the Chinese New Year. Ready for a fun Chinese New Year Craft? Chinese New Year is one of those really fun holidays that I enjoyed celebrating as a kid. Yummy food, wearing new clothes, red envelopes filled with money, and watching cool dragon and lion dancing? Come on, what's not to love? Since the holiday is just around the corner, I showed Chuck some lion dancing videos (Youtube to the rescue!) and then thought it'd be fun if we did some dragon crafts together: Two Chinese New Year Dragon Crafts Little background about me- Growing up I always felt like a "twinkie." Yellow on the outside, white on the inside. You see, I looked Asian, but I didn't always feel that way. Now that Chuck's getting a bit older, hubby and I are trying to figure out how two twinkies like us pass down their cultural traditions. (Ehh... it's a work in progress....) This craft is one way that we're trying to pass down our tradition. And, in the interest of full disclosure, Chuck really enjoyed making the handprint dragon.... but he wasn't too keen on coloring my paper bag dragon pieces. However, once I colored and glued everything down for him, he enjoyed playing with it like a puppet. So, do you wanna see how we made these two dragons? (I've got templates too! Ooh la la!) Keep on reading! (And if you like this craft, definitely check out this dancing Chinese Dragon Puppet. It actually dances and is made from recycled materials!) This post contains affiliate links. She made lovely dragon scales by simply tracing her children's hands onto construction paper. So if you like that idea better, check her blog out! 1. Have your child paint pieces of paper. 2. Once the paint dries, trace handprints onto your piece of paper and cut them out. (We used 9 or 10 hand prints.) 3. Glue them like scales to your body piece. 4. Color in your head, claw, and tail pieces. (I drew them onto watercolor paper, so we painted them with watercolors.) 5. Cut them out and then glue them onto your body. You're done! Color in your pieces. 2. Cut them out. 3. Glue them onto your paper bag. (Chuck's arm is pretty small, so I cut the paper bag so that it was shorter.) Download the free printable below and you'll be making tons of dancing paper dragons in no time! How to Make Chinese New Year Paper Chain Dragons How to Make Paper Chain Dragons: 1. Print out and color this paper chain dragon printable here. (Note: The printable is free for download. If you're logged in at a school, sometimes your administrator will not allow you to download items from webpages. To get around that, simply log into your personal email account at home and try downloading the printable. Then you should be able to get it.) Then, cut out the pieces. (The template for the strips was hard for my tiny preschooler's hands to curl. So I extended it a bit if you're working with younger children. 2. Cut out strips of paper for your paper chains. (We traced construction paper, but to make this a recycled craft, just trace old newspaper or magazines!) 3. Staple your face onto a strip. 4. Then, proceed to make your paper chains. (Staple the legs to pieces as you make them.) When you're finished, staple your tail onto the end. We made two- one was made from 9 pieces and the other was out of 11 pieces. But I saw this really neat version on the Frugal Handmade that was super long! She also made her face facing sideways, which makes it great for hanging up as decoration.) 8 More Awesome Chinese New Years Crafts!
