You've probably heard of DISC tests, DISC assessments, or DISC profiles, but are they all the same? What is DISC and the purpose for DISC tools?
As a child of the 70's, I grew up watching Rocky and Bullwinkle (in reruns... I'm not that old): Bullwinkle never did manage to pull out a rabbit out of his hat. I learned from this fun article that there were only five things that ever came out- a lion, a rhino, a bear, a tiger, and Rocky. No rabbit. Here's a fun craft for your own "Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!" moment. The rabbit puppet moves; hide him in the hat, and then pull him out with plenty of drama. A good magician never reveals her secrets, but I'm a terrible magician. Besides, a good craft blogger always reveals her secrets. So here's what you need to know: --------- "Watch Me Pull a Rabbit Out of My Hat!" Materials: cardstock or construction paper - black, grey, pink, red scissors craft glue Sharpie craft stick Steps: Cut a black rectangle for the main part of the hat, then two identical pieces for the brim of the hat. Glue one piece to the front of the hat. Flip the hat so that the back is facing up and glue the second brim piece ONLY to the ends of the other brim piece. You're making a pocket so the rabbit can slide out of the hat. Cut a grey rabbit. Add pink inner ears and a pink nose, then add the eyes, mouth, and whiskers with the Sharpie. Glue the rabbit to the craft stick.
So, I totally didn't make this, but it was hanging up in my classroom last week (Thanks, Terri!), and I totally love it (and the kids REALLY enjoy it). It's super easy to make. All you need is a piece of poster board (Dollar Store sells them for $.50), 2 paper cups, 2 paper towel roll insides, a basket or bowl, beads/counters/beans, etc. and a marker to draw the plus sign! These are all simply taped to the poster board using packaging tape. My older students love to experiment with bigger numbers. When 3 students play, one likes to use a white board to write down whatever math problem they are working on while the other two count out the beads. The children put the first set of counting items in the first cup, and the other child puts the second set in the second cup. They all fall through to the basket, and then they count them all up. It's such an easy and frugal way to get kids having fun while learning math! Looking for more easy educational ideas? I have been on a part-part-whole kick. So let's just continue that with one more bright idea (well, for now!) I love using number bracelets, divider plates, and shake and spill to work on part-part-whole. But I wanted a manipulative that tied directly to the number bond graphic: I started with chenille sticks (or pipe cleaners). Then I created a number bond manipulative. The two parts are one color and the whole is a different color. Once it is made, students can use any kind of manipulatives to break apart numbers (buttons, beans, or beads.) We used beads. Students can move the beads around to create different combinations of a specific number. The great thing...this number bond manipulative can be used over and over with different numbers.
