Il calcolatore Olivetti ELEA 9003 fu il primo al mondo ad essere completamente transistorizzato, progettato non come prototipo per esperimenti, ma a scopo commerciale. Non fu l'IBM, non fu la divisione UNIVAC della Sperry Rand, non fu neppure qualche università americana, ma l'italianissima Olivetti la prima a raggiungere questo traguardo, e con distacco: non era solo una macchina avanzatissima come tecnologia, che già sarebbe bastato, ma aveva anche prestazioni tali che gli americani dell'IBM dovettero faticare qualche anno per raggiungerla. Ed è anche una macchina molto bella: l'aspetto esteriore fu interamente disegnato dal famoso architetto Ettore Sottsass che ne fece un modello di ergonomia ed eleganza fino a quel momento impensabile per un calcolatore. Ne rimangono solo due esemplari completi: uno al museo delle poste, a Roma, e l'altro all'interno dell'ISIS Enrico Fermi di Bibbiena, in provincia di Arezzo, il protagonista di queste foto. Quest'ultimo esemplare è l'unico funzionante (quello di Roma è smontato), seppur con qualche difficoltà dovuta alla veneranda età (compie ora 50 anni), ma proprio quest'anno sono iniziati i lavori di risoluzione dei vari problemini tecnici che lo rendono instabile, soprattutto a causa di fluttuazioni nelle tensioni di alimentazione. Il nome ELEA non è solo l'acronimo di "elaboratore elettronico aritmetico", ma è anche il nome della città che fu la culla della famosa scuola di filosofi logici pre-socratici, come Zenone da Elea e Parmenide. Un'omaggio alla logica, per una macchina che fa della logica la sua ragione d'essere. Da un punto di vista più tecnico, il calcolatore occupa 85 metri quadrati, consuma circa 40.000 watt (come 15 appartamenti) e pesa svariate tonnellate. Ha una capacità di memoria di 20.000 posizioni, input da nastri magnetici, nastri di carta e schede perforate e output su schede perforate e su carta, diretto su telescrivente e indiretto su stampante.
