An unusual Indian half-relief carved ebony armchair Coromandel coast, 1680-1700 ? Throughout carved with floral and vine motifs, the back rail with a central peony and two bulbous finials, with cane seating. Measures: H. 81 x W. 61 x D. 56 cm Seat height 30.5 cm Note: Carving on the front as well as on the back is rather unusual and indicates that the chair was not intended to be placed against a wall. Ebony furniture with bold half-relief carving of flowers was made in Batavia, Sri Lanka and in India. However, a number of stylistic features (see: Jan Veenendaal, Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lank and India during the Dutch period, 1985, page 21- 26), a carved letter on the inside of the seat rail which apparently originates from an Indian script and the fact that this armchair turned up in England all make it likely that this chair is a “Custstoel”, a chair from the Coromandel Coast.

This teak bookcase is one of the sturdy and handsome British Colonial furniture that was made in Burma during the British Raj. This bookcase was probably used in a colonial office. Its teakwood frame, along with the glass & wood doors once protected books and documents from insects. Most insects are repelled by the scent of Teak in much the same way they are repelled by the scent of Camphor and Cedar. In addition to being insect-resistant, Teak is water-resistant. This double-resistance, combined with its availability and beauty made Teak the wood of choice furniture-making in Burma and India during the colonial period. The bookcase dates to the early 1900’s.

A silver 'V.O.C. AMSTERDAM' ingot circa 1738, with monogram and the assay mark of the Amsterdam Grill family With V.O.C. monogram and the A for Amsterdam. L. approx. 15.5 cm Weight approx. 2000 grams Note: The ingots were salvaged in 2004 from the wreck of the VOC indiaman Rooswijk, equipped by the Amsterdam VOC Chamber. The Rooswijk sank on its second voyage to the Dutch East Indies off the English coast on the Goodwin Sands in 1739. The Dutch had little to offer in Asia to trade for Asian goods, but silver and gold. Therefore the VOC ships sailed to Asia with silver bars and gold coins to pay for Asian goods. The silver bars were cast in private factories in the Netherlands, run by assayers, from melted down coins, mainly Spanish American “reales”. Once in Asia these bars were melted down again and minted into coins such as rupees, that could be used for payment in the East. Please note, form can slightly differ from the photo., but monogram will be the same.
An exhibition of rarely seen photographs that capture aspects of Indian life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be on display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.

I've always liked India Hicks and not just because she is beautiful or because her father was the very talented designer David Hicks OR because she was Princess Diana's flower girl (well maybe that helps a little bit). I like her because she has great style. Her home in the Bahamas is a testament to that - beautiful yet relaxed. Such a great combination. Hicks is the first girl on the left looking into the camera.

This majestic Indo-Dutch chest harks back to the colonial days and the 'Spice Wars'. Originally from colonial Ceylon (modern-day Sri-Lanka), it dates from the middle of the 18th century. It is beautifully constructed from jackfruit wood with ebony trim and beading. The intricate and flamboyant brass decoration makes this chest incredibly striking. It is an exceptional example of Indo-Dutch furniture and would have been owned by a wealthy trader travelling between Sri-Lanka, South India and Europe. Perfect for storing bedding with three external drawers in the stand, making it practical as well as being visually beautiful. An impressive centrepiece for any room. From Ceylon (modern-day Sri-Lanka) UK Delivery Charge - except Highlands & Islands £80More delivery options available at checkout
