Even before becoming a homeschooler I knew the importance of reading aloud. I vividly remember reading books to my ginormous pregnant belly (yes I was that mom). But it was not until I became a homeschooler and read Jim Trelease’s Read-Aloud Handbook then subsequently stumbled upon the amazing Sarah Mackenzie at Read Aloud Revival that I...

Are you teaching students about famous people? Here are a few ideas for biographies for elementary students to use in your classroom!
This is a guest post by Richard Giso, an occasional contributor to our blog. Click here to see his earlier posts, and check back here on our Classroom Literacy blog frequently to see if he's got a new post up! You could also check out his blog, called Mr. Giso's Room to Read , in which he writes about fun classroom activities, behavior management, and classroom management. Hello there. Rich from Mr. Giso’s Room to Read here pleased as ever to continue my contributions to the Hameray Literacy Blog . I’m very eager to begin my set of six guest posts that will feature practical and fun uses for titles available in the Hameray Biography Series . Upon their arrival, these books found the perfect home in my classroom. They are so easy to level, since the catalog lists the Fountas and Pinnell level for each title. Don’t they look great in their new home? Each title features a glossary, a timeline and a “Learn More” page that highlights websites and other books my readers can consult to research each famous individual further. The books are loaded with photographs, captions and additional information boxes. They support all I have been teaching my readers in terms of navigating through a book’s informational text features. In no time, I set out to get these biographies in my young readers’ hands. You see, I teach in an Innovation School in Salem, Massachusetts. As part of our model, students transition on each trimester to teams of teachers. In my team, we share first and second graders. The Biography Series is ideal for my second grade readers—especially for this time of the school year where I need to keep them reading in books that pique their interests. As you can see, my readers were all about diving in to these books right away! The activity I’m sharing is called the Biography Alphabox. I set this activity up to be an independent reading component to my literacy block where my readers that can read independently get to read these biographies. It features a table with each letter of the alphabet. As students read, they record key words or phrases that start with the appropriate letter. For example, the student below dove right in to reading about Anne Frank. For “A” he selected amazing author, as she is well known for her diary. For “C” he chose confident and crowded, for obvious reasons. From the time line featured in the back of the book, he estimated that she was in hiding for about two years; this went under the letter “Y.” For me, this Biography Alphabox activity is sort of nontraditional. It gives readers the luxury to think out of the box. I’m not telling them key facts about their individuals. The information is coming from them. What can be better? My readers respond very well to this activity, which I’m featuring as a download. In fact, I have several “biographers” that are on to their third book. I hope your students get some good use out of this activity. As always, thanks for reading! ~~~ I'm a proud teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience. I began my teaching career as a fourth grade teacher at the Bates Elementary School in Salem, Massachusetts. Since then, I have taught fourth grade for eight years. From there, I moved to a job as a reading coach under the Reading First grant. Having missed my true passion—having a classroom of my own—I returned to teaching as a first grade teacher for the next five years. Now I've moved to the Carlton Innovation School, also in Salem, Massachusetts, where I am ready to begin my first year as a member of a team of four teachers that teach grades one and two. In addition, I teach undergraduate and graduate students at Salem State University. My courses involve literacy, children's literature, and elementary education. My educational interests include early literacy, effective reading interventions, and positive classroom climates. ~~~ For more information on the Biography series, which was used in this activity, click here to visit our website , or click the series highlights image to the left below to download an information sheet with key features. As I've mentioned before, I try to always be in the middle of several books at once so that I've got a pick to fit every mood that might come up. My "ideal four" genres to always have going on? An adult fiction, a young adult fiction, a nonfiction (often a self-help or religious title),
Do you teach about biographies? Last week we used the anchor chart above to introduce what a biography is (…isn’t George cute?) I saw him originally at Apples, Crayons, and Caffeine. We brainstormed the things we thought a biography is, what’s included, and the questions it might answer. We read about Tomás Rivera in our reading...
Biography bags are a favorite activity of mine! The kids love them too! You can put as much effort and time into these as you have available! They are so worth it! They're very fun to show off to parents at a museum day or invite another class over to see them! This PBL project is interdisciplinary. Components Writing: After researching their historical figure, students write a grade appropriate biography about their historical figure. Math: Students create a timeline of his/her important life events. We used an app called Timeline. Students created a booklet ahead of time with dates & illustrations to add to their app creations. Social Studies: Students identify character traits that made his/her historical figure a good leader. We focused on Jackie Robinson's patience and Martin Luther King Jr's determination. But we branched out to other figures not in our second grade standards. Other: Students learn research and note-taking skills, students artistically transform a paper bag into their historical figure, students learn cooperation as they complete this with partners or small groups, & students can complete self assessments at the end. Artifacts: Students might include 2-3 representative artifacts inside the bag. These can be items brought from home or made in class. For example, a trophy to represent Jackie Robinson's induction into the Hall of Fame or a kite to represent Ben Franklin's discovery.

Part 4 The students have been working hard reading and researching about their person of choice! They are learning so much and so excited! One little girl ran up to me and said, "Did you know that Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day! I need to put this on the timeline!" It's important to model how to write complete sentences from their recording sheets. If you do not take time to do this students will copy word for word from their recording sheets. This will mean they will either copy it from the book or write an incomplete sentence. This student researched Dr. Seuss. She has some spelling issues but she has been finding some great facts. After she filled out the recording sheets she chose what kind of paper she wanted to use to write her report. I offer the children many different types of paper. Each paper choice has a spot for a heading. These headings get transferred to the Table of Contents! Students love filling out the About the Author page! Students look at a photo or drawing of their person and they draw on the cover with pencil. After they are done they trace the drawing with Sharpie. This helps bring out the details and helps when they color. Click to Enter the Giveaway! Teaching with Biographies and Ben Franklin With all of the fabulous biographies available today for children, teaching about and with biographies can be such fun for your students. It hasn't always been this way. When I was a little girl (many, many years ago...) I remember biographies being boring, fact-filled chapter books. They were definitely not the books that I chose when I went to the library. The only biographies I remember reading were those assigned to me by my teachers. Today's biographies for children are very different. Biographies for children are now colorful picture books full of interesting information that grab the reader's attention and are enjoyable to read. I recently gathered a variety of biographies for my students on Benjamin Franklin. My school library has several wonderful biographies about Mr. Franklin. We combined learning about the characteristics of biographies with learning more about this U.S. founding father. Some great biographies about Benjamin Franklin include: Ben Franklin His Wit and Wisdom by Alan Schroeder Who Was Ben Franklin? by Dennis Fradin Now and Ben by Gene Barretta Although all of these books are excellent, I chose to begin by using How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning by Rosalyn Schanzer. Before we read this book, I had the students to do a variation of an ABC brainstorm activity. With ABC brainstorm, students write what they know about a given topic using each letter of the alphabet. Instead of ABC's, we did a BEN brainstorm. Students wrote one fact about Ben Franklin with each of the 3 letters: "B", "E", and "N". (3 facts are much faster to write than 26.) I discovered that many of my students knew very little of Ben Franklin or thought he was one of our presidents. After we discussed our prior knowledge, we then discussed characteristics of biographies. My sweet teacher friend next door has this adorable biography anchor chart that she let me share. After reviewing the characteristics of a biography, we read and discussed How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning. My students really enjoyed this colorful and interesting biography. Next, students used their Chromebooks to read an online book about Ben Franklin. This book is actually part of a paid website that my school system has purchased called myOn. It was a fun graphic biography that my students enjoyed, but if you do not have access to this website, another great choice is this page from Mr. Nussbaum. The students then used the information they learned from both resources to complete a graphic organizer. This biography graphic organizer can be found in my store in a packet containing four graphic organizers for your students to use as templates as they research and write about a person. Choose the graphic organizer that is perfect for your whole class, assign different graphic organizers for different groups of students, or choose specific organizers to differentiate the needs of your students. Use the graphic organizer alone, or as a writing template for the writing page essay paper. A grading rubric is also included if you choose to use this as an assessment. Click here or the picture below to purchase. Finally, we watched a 90 second video that recapped the information we had learned about Benjamin Franklin. This short video can be found here. If you are looking for a fun lesson to use with biographies, I hope you may want to try these activities out with your students. I know my kiddos had a lot of fun and learned a lot about Benjamin Franklin and biographies. Have a blessed day! Don't Decorate - Design! It is back to school time, and teachers all across the US are frantically putting up posters and bulletin boards to decorate their room before the first day of school. But instead
Each year, one of our writing projects is a biography. The research the kids need to do, the expository style of the writing, the conventions that come along with it...the entire writing process is really developed well during this unit. The kids also really enjoy it, so that helps ;) But, in my class we don't just write a biography. What fun would that be? In addition to the actual biography, I have the students create a "Hanger Person" to go along with it. These are SO much fun! The kids really get into them and, consequently, have great writing as well. Most of this project is centered around the actual writing (as it should be). Because I have the ELL class, I heavily scaffold the writing process. To tell you the truth, in 5th grade the students are still developing writers as it is, so I would scaffold no matter what. Each of my students choose a biographical subject (in this case, a Revolutionary War figure, as that is our major thematic unit of study) I then help them to organize their thoughts using a few graphic organizers. This is the organizer the students begin their research with. All info they find in each of the categories is just placed inside of the box. The students make the decision later on whether or not they will actually use the info in their writing. The initial information gather is just a mish mash of everything they find initially important. When doing this, I use the "I do, You do" model. Basically, I model how to do a specific part (ie: finding information on the person's early life, or writing an introduction paragraph getting in all important information without giving away the body of the essay) Then, once the students have seen me do that specific part, they do the part on their own. Doing this has helped my class to not only become more proficient writers, but more confident in their writing as well. They see what I do, and use that as a model for their own. And, now, at this point in the year, they honestly don't need me to do as much scaffolding. They are striking out on their own and doing a great job! This is the Introduction Organizer. They do all work right on it to make it easier for the students to access the information and craft logical, interesting paragraphs. I help them to use this with the "I do, You do" modeling technique. Once the writing is done, the fun begins. I ask the students to create a "Hanger Person" in the likeness of their research subject. Using a hanger, tagboard, and some art supplies, the kids make the historical figure come to life. They LOVE this. They get SO into it too. George Washington actually wears a yarn wig. Benjamin Franklin has bifocals. Deborah Sampson is dressed like a man. The kids take their research and go all out in their creation! The students then present their work (to work on oral language standards) and the other students have fun trying to guess who the subject is just from the visual at first! Some of them are so good, the guess is instantaneous...others, we need a few hints ;) Can you tell who the people below are? (I will give you a hint....one is the wearing dark colors because he had to warn of the impending British attack at night, and the other is the father of our country) You can get the full project, complete with ALL of the scaffolding graphic organizers, rubrics, checklists, and standards at my TpT store. It is a project I promise your students, if they are anything like mine, will get a lot out of.
