This post was written on November 5, 2011. Our first year of Essentials has proven T-O-U-G-H. It would have been a challenge even if we hadn’t been battling all the noise from the ongoing construction. In the process of learning how to implement Essentials in our own home, I have discovered some ways to make […]
*** Also available as part of Duffy's Black Death Package: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Duffys-Complete-Black-Death-Depth-Study-Package-1560411 *** This is a PowerPoint, Poster and Worksheet set used to introduce students to the hierarchical structure of Feudal England and Manorialism, from the Conquest (1066) to Black Death (1347). I've used a variant of this PowerPoint for the last three years with Grade 8 History students at my high school: it has remained engaging for the students and seems to explain the hierarchy well, so I continue to reuse it every year! Before starting this series of slides, my students will have covered the Battle of Hastings; generally I follow it with The Black Death. Topics covered: - Feudal Pyramid with information slides on King, Nobility, Knights, Peasants, Craftsmen and the Church. - William I (the Conqueror) - briefly. - Domesday Book - briefly. - Manor / Manorialism systems - Everyday life for the peasants including farming, yearly calendar, living conditions. Included in the ZIP File is: - PowerPoint, including animated step by step guide to the Feudal Pyramid, information slides, and a section on Manorialism - PDF of the complete Feudal Pyramid to print as a class poster. - 3 page Worksheet to compliment the Slides: I have my students complete the worksheet while they listen, stopping to ensure they keep up. This is an engagement tactic. I've also included a list of useful websites on Feudalism, which may be handy for new educators. Australian Curriculum connection: Year 8 History: Medieval Europe Depth Study (c.590 – c.1500) The way of life in Medieval Europe (social, cultural, economic and political features) and the roles and relationships of different groups in society (ACDSEH008) *** I'd love any feedback on the quality of my products and requests for changes. We had a lighter home-school week this week (which might make one think I would have time to blog more, but no). Some highs and lows to our week in our weekly run-down. Scholastic Report Looking at what did and didn’t get done on my planning sheet this week, the verdict is that we had solid school days Monday through Wednesday. The girls each got in two math lessons a piece. Counting peanuts into groups of ten. And eating several of them. We hit all of our Language Arts - Explode the Code, Handwriting, First Language Lessons, Writing with Ease. We read/listened to the audio of chapter 4 in Story of the World, learning about Ancient Egypt. We worked our our memory work for week 3 in Classical Conversations. Highlights of our memory work were learning the names of the Greek and Roman gods, the parts of an animal cell, and starting Latin noun endings. Typing up her notes for her CC presentation. A little appalled at the state of my desk in this picture so please avert your eyes from that! We finished (finally!) our recent lunchtime chapter book read-aloud, Little Town on the Prairie. There was some talk about jumping right into These Happy Golden Years, but instead we’ve picked up Rabbit Hill by Robert Lawson. (He was also the author of Ben and Me which we’ve read-aloud and I’ve blogged here). B and I worked on her math and some letter recognition activities that I found in our school closet for her kindergarten. I’ve got the itch to pull out all our fall / apple books and do a lapbook with her so my hopes are to get that organized and lined up this weekend. Life Report We had a late night Monday night with the girls – unplanned – which set the tone for needing to slow down towards the end of the week. I had run to the store with a couple of the kids and got home right at bedtime. B came out to help me bring things in and closed the van door for me … unfortunately with one of her fingers still inside. My poor girl slammed it good and after calming her down and putting ice on it for about thirty minutes, T loaded her up and headed to the ER for an x-ray on it. : ( God again protected one of our kids (remembering last week’s update where the boy pulled his dresser over – I’m hoping this doesn’t become a weekly wrap-up theme!) The finger wasn’t broken – just very bruised. And as of this weekend, other than being a little stiff, most of her pain is gone. Although we would obviously not have wished this to happen to her, one perk was that she had a killer presentation at CC the next morning about her ER experience. : ) This was also a LATE night for the girls. B didn’t get home from the ER until almost 11pm, and at least one sister (the one she shares a room with) couldn’t go to sleep until she was back home. By Thursday they were all really draaaaaagging, so we had a very lite school day on Thursday and Friday of this week. I am feeling the need to shake our daily routine up a little bit now that the weather is a little cooler outside. The schedule I worked out for us has served us well the first six week of school, and I could probably keep using it, but I would like to be able to work in a morning walk each day. Still working out kinks, but we took a walk/bike ride on Wednesday morning before starting school and all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. On Thursday, I escaped for a good chunk of the day! I have now warned my husband that I might need these “teacher development days” every six weeks or so! : ) A college acquaintance was in town giving a workshop on Thursday morning and I attended that. After checking with my friend who was staying with the girls, I found she could stay a little longer and I got to have lunch with T. By myself. With no interruptions. I have to fess up on myself – I give the girls a hard time about talking to me non-stop when I get one of them one-on-one to myself, but I think I did the same thing to T on our lunch date. : ) Much needed shot in the arm for Mama. Breakfast : oatmeal, coffee, reading through Matthew with the girls, and one of our history timeline cards from CC. So far this addition to our schedule is working well! (We were doing this reading before, just upstairs in the schoolroom). And with that we’ve wrapped up another week of school. It’s hard to believe that today is the first day of autumn, too! Today looks to be a normal Saturday around these parts, albeit with mid-seventy degree temperatures. I’ll take that! We have soccer for B this afternoon, a quick grocery run and stop at Staples, and our family pizza and movie night tonight. Typically that’s our Friday night activity, however, T hosted a music team get-together/rehearsal here last night and it was a loud, late night with a house full of musicians. : ) Happy Saturday. Linking up with Kris and Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers!
Here is a day in the life of yours truly as a CC Abecedarian tutor. Abecedarians are the 4 and 5 year olds.8:30 – arrive at our CC location to write out all the memory work on the whiteboard…
This is a massive list of resources I have on my bookshelf to supplement our studies throughout the year while in CC's Cycle 2 Foundations.
In Class... EEL Board Work--True/False questions and Undiagram an interrogative sentence New Part of Speech--Conjunctions Chart H 5 types of conjunctions--will learn them throughout year correlative (co-relative=2 words always go together) relative pronouns--also on pronoun chart (F) these begin who/which clauses subordinating conjunctions www.asia.wub for main ones coordinating conjunctions FANBOYS Did a cheer to help remember Also sang these, along with the definition of conjunction to "Father Abraham" Foundations, Cycle 2, weeks 21-22 compound subjects and verbs are diagramed with a "rocket ship" Looked at Chart A and how much we have covered so far this year. It is a lot in just six weeks! New Sentence Structure--Compound 2 independent clauses (house diagram) combined using a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) Must have a comma before the FANBOYS Diagrammed with the FANBOYS on a "chair" in between the clauses New Sentence Pattern--S-Vt-Do Direct Objects are nouns/pronouns and must follow verb; answer who/what Transitive verbs transfer action from subject of sentence to the direct object Diagrammed like the pattern is shown on chart A When studying chart A, it is a good idea to have your child mark the diagram lines as well as the abbreviations. (Thanks Jennifer B.!) Conjunction Junction! Math Played Battleship with partners www.nationalnumberknockout.com IEW Read our papers within our table groups Silly Sentences at tables Dressed-up boring sentences with at least 3 given dress-ups or decorations New Structure--Summarizing a Reference (Unit 4) "Some-a-rize" Key words for outline come from interesting, important, or relevant facts NOT from each sentence! 5 to 7 facts (lines) in Key Word Outline Still only 3 words per line Topic Sentence is Roman Numeral "I" in KWO Clincher Sentence just write clincher on KWO (no need for key words) when writing sentence in paragraph, remember rule: "The clincher sentence MUST repeat or reflect 2-3 key words from the topic sentence." At Home... EEL page 108-109 (110-111) in EEL page 109/111 is a test/proof for the first six weeks This is great to do sometime over break to see where your student is and see where there might be areas you need to work on. Remember, mastery is not expected for 1st or 2nd year students! Study Chart H (conjunctions) Also study chart G (compound sentence structure)--we ran out of time for this, but it is important! Continue practicing all charts learned so far (A through F) Work on the vocabulary words and definitions at the beginning of each lesson covered so far. Analytical Task Sheet Try to complete 1 practice sentence each day Sentences 1 and 2 are the only true basic ones this week You can change the words in the sentence to create new ones (if you feel confident), or you can use the history practice sentences I sent out by email a couple of weeks ago or ones on CC Connected. Remember the section in Lesson 3 that gives all of the details for the ATS, and remember the steps are laid out for you on each sentence's page. Optional--Editing exercises and Spelling List in EEL Don't feel that you always have to simply write the charts to practice. Get creative! Math Practice Number Knockout at home Practice and work on speed and accuracy of math facts IEW Lesson 9 from the US History Based Writing book Follow this lesson as closely as you can/would like to. I don't teach from this book (other than reading the source text) on purpose. I leave all of the great teaching helps and ideas in the USHBW lessons for you to use at home! There are some great ideas in there! The text on "The First Thanksgiving" is to help you teach the topic-clincher rule. It is a great resource! You are only doing one paragraph. The idea is to take the 2 paragraphs and summarize them into one. Don't forget about vocabulary words! There are flashcards for these in the back of the student US history book Optional--Bring a completed paper to turn in and share on Tuesday This should be a marked copy with a signed checklist if you want feedback. Should also have a clean (and even illustrated) copy for the published student book Optional--If you are continuing to do school throughout break and would like more writing to do, don't forget about the blackline masters download in the front of the USHBW book. There is another source text that goes along with the one in lesson 9 that would work great for additional practice. Reminders... Be sure to read your lessons for the week after break--Week 7 in EEL Guide and Lesson 10 in USHBW book. Our next Pudewa night is not until the end of October, but make plans to join us on October 26! My Prayer for you this week... "By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might, for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory." Proverbs 24:3-6 May you remember not only the premise and philosophy behind Classical Education, but may you also be encouraged by each other ("wise guidance" and "abundance of counselors"). I love how we are all in this together, encouraging each other, learning from each other, and supporting each other! Have a great break!
