Bledington lies between Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Norton. The River Coln flows through a broad village green overlooked by picturesque Cotswold houses, small bridges that cross the stream add to an idyllic, timeless view. The existing church dates from the 1170s although it may be of Saxon origin.The east and west nave walls date from this Norman period as does the tub font and a rare early bellcote. A south aisle was added in the early 13th century and a little later the chancel was extended. The church was owned by Winchcombe Abbey and shared in the wealth generated by the wool trade towards the end of the 15th century. It was at this time that the battlemented tower was raised on arches within the western portion of the nave, the west wall rests on the original Norman work. Of greater interest are the wonderful Perpendicular north windows of the nave and the clerestory adding height to the church and yet more light. These windows have whole panels and many fragments of stained glass from the 1470s including a series of donors with their names inscribed and the date 1476. There is also a tiny chantry chapel with glass from 1490, this has a very fine 'Coronation of the Virgin' and six Apostles in the tracery above, all under a beautiful stone canopy. Broadwell gurgles and bubbles with bright water, springs feed streams that course through and surround the village green, here a shallow ford provides a crossing. Fresh water so close to the prehistoric Ridge way led to an early and long enduring settlement of this area. A Roman villa lies between the village and the Fosseway, an important Roman road. The manor is mentioned in Saxon charters as well as it's entry in the Domesday survey which mentions a priest. So the Norman church may be Saxon in origin, the church and manor were given to the abbey of Evesham. After the Dissolution the manor was divided between the Hodges and Chadwell families whose wealth is displayed in a magnificent collection of Bale tombs near the chancel of the historic village church. Although on the outskirts of Stow-on-the-Wold and close to the busy Fosseway a quiet unbroken for many centuries envelops this ancient Cotswold landscape of church, manor house, green and village Inn. When Edward Thomas's train stopped 'unwontedly' at Adlestrop station it became the inspiration for the most famous of his poems: ' Yes. I remember Adlestrop- / The name, because one afternoon / Of heat the exprss- train drew up there / Unwontedly' Though the station no longer exists the station sign is displayed in a shelter at the centre of the village. If this is not reason enough to visit Adlestrop, which is close to the Chipping Norton road near to Stow On The Wold, it's connections with Jane Austen must be of interest to visitors. The village itself surrounds a central green and is built of local Cotswold stone. Jane Austen is believed to have visited her mother's cousin Rev. Thomas Leigh three times between 1794 and 1806, she stayed at Adlestrop house the then rectory and would have worshiped at the local church. A beautiful hill-top village near Northleach.The church is Norman although it was substantially restored by James Medland 1864-6. The view across the valley of the church rising above the former rectory and the wide sweep of countryside beyond seems lost in time. A beautiful collection of Cotswold cottages and farms meander past the village pond and down to the church at the end of the village. The church has an attractive new roof with a fine cross on the gable. The building is12th century in origin, the 9ft thick walls at the base of the tower date from this period. The tower itself and the important Early Gothic chancel are 13th century and are probably the work of Eynsham Abbey which owned the advowson at this time An interesting church with many original elements such as the Early Gothic east window arrangement and a magnificent 14th century stained glass crucifix with it's rare green glass cross. Another claim to fame is an association with Gustav Holst who at the age of 17 in 1892-93 became St Laurence's organist, his first paid post. St Michael's church is now some distance from the village and is surrounded by the buildings of Church Farm. The church is of late 12th century construction with a small Perpendicular tower and a late Norman north transept. Church, tythe barn and farm are beautifully maintained and form an attractive grouping visible from some distance across the wonderful local countryside. The nave has a lively depiction of Death wielding his scythe, no doubt a stern warning to wayward churchgoers. Yanworth is a short distance from Chedworth Roman villa and the spectacular countryside of the Stowell Park Estate that provides the setting for both village and villa make the area well worth a visit. www.bwthornton.co.uk

It is the only henge monument discovered in Gloucestershire and is at the heart of a ceremonial landscape consisting of sixty round barrow within a three-mile radius. Shipton is on the edge the ancient forest of Wychwood between Burford and Chipping Norton. An attractive Cotswold stone village with an interesting medieval church. Tower c1200-1250 with an octagonal spire, round corner pinnacles with ball finials. 1115 Henry I joined Shipton, Swinbrook and Bricklesworh forming Prebendary for Salisbury Cathedral. The church has a C14 south porch with an upper room and west stair turret. The porch has two niches which contain their original sculptures. www.bwthornton.co.uk
Bloxham was under Royal patronage until 1547 and this level of endowment has left a church of national significance. Situated a few miles south of Banbury in Oxfordshire it's 198ft 14th century tower rivals it's neighbour Adderbury and is assumed to be the work of the same mason although local myth credits the devil. 14th and 15th century tracery embellishes the windows and the vivid imagination of the 14th century 'Banbury carvers' creates a wonderful bestiary of grotesque and comic scenes. Not only medieval sculpture but also William Morris stained glass fills three of the windows including work by Burne-Jones and Webb. Bloxham has a rare 15th century screen with fragmentary remains of painted figures and some surviving wall paintings. A small village set high above the Evenlode valley on the border of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. Recorded in Domesday as Fyfhide or five hides (600 acres), the manor was held by Henrici de Ferriers a Norman knight. The church is 13th century in origin and has an unusual 14th century octagonal west tower. The south porch is also of interest as it has a roof of stone slabs carried on a single arch, it is believed to date from Early English period, the13th century. The south-west chancel window has two heraldic shields, one is of the Zouche family and dates from the 13th century. www.bwthornton.co.uk
