Deep within the woods, amid the harry and hassle of endlessly proliferating demands - from work and loved ones, social media and new technologies, as well as by church and other organisations to which we belong - lies God's invitation to Sabbath, a clearing in which to pause, to breathe, to find light, harmony and regeneration. In this beautiful meditation on the theme of Sabbath, Nicola Slee helps us to discover this treasure within ourselves, guided by poetry (her own and that of Wendell Berry), journal extracts and space for you, the reader, to record your own thoughts and reflections along the way.

Grace and Gigabytes: Being Church in a Tech-Shaped Culture explores change and ministry at the intersection of technology, culture, and church. In today's tech-shaped culture, we learn and we know through questions, connection, collaboration, and creativity--the networked values of the digital age. Drawing on experiences from a career as an instructional designer in the technology industry and a lifetime of leadership in the Lutheran church, Ryan M. Panzer argues that digital technology is not a set of tools, but a force for cultural transformation that has profound implications for ministry. Grace and Gigabytes explores shifts in culture that have heightened amid accelerated adoption and use of digital media. Just as previous revolutions in technology have disrupted culture, especially processes of cultural "meaning-making" related to faith and spirituality, so we are living through a powerful revolution of digital technology, culture, and spiritual thought. This revolution calls the church to change. This needed change requires not so much a shift in tactics: launching a website, building a podcast, or starting a social media page. The change is a philosophical pivot: prioritizing collaboration, making the flow of knowledge more dynamic, celebrating connection and creativity, and always affirming the question. Panzer discusses each of these philosophical pivots, describing their technological origins. He tells stories of ministries that have aligned to this cultural moment. And he provides concrete recommendations for the practice of ministry in a digital age.
Who said technology can’t be an integral part of Christian youth events? It’s no secret that young members of the church love technology. Whether it’s
Social media can be a great thing. It's a way to keep in contact with others, to know what's going on in their lives and to share updates in our own. But it can also be a bad thing. Social media acts as a tool for comparison and comparison is a thief of joy. Social media can also remind you of the constant bad things going on the world and can be really depressing. Taking time to "detox" from social media can offer some great benefits. Signs you spend too much time on social media: You feel anxious when you're away from your phone or computer You only do things so you can share about them (this is a real thing) You feel stressed out by a lack of response to something you post You fail to get things done because you spend so much time scrolling Things you can do instead of social media: Spend time with God in His word or in His creation, or both Get to know yourself better and discover new hobbies Go for a walk or just be outside Rest Read Write Be creative: paint, draw, take photos Spend time with other people, away from the internet! How to detox from social media: Use the "do not disturb" feature on your cell phone Turn off all push notifications on your cell phone Sign out of your accounts on your phone, computers, tablets, etc. Charge your phone outside of your bedroom and use an actual alarm clock in place of your phone If you find certain apps excessively addicting, just delete them. Such as games, facebook, instagram, or snapchat (gasp) If you return to social media: Be intentional with your posts Set a limit to how long you will spend online Let go of the apps and/or accounts you don't miss during the detox I suggest you start slowly. Commit to one day of social media fasting. Then move onto a week. You will find that you rely on it less and less over time. And now, enjoy all your free time.
