There is LOTS of controversy surrounding phonics instruction these days. Whole language, spelling lists, direct phonics instruction…They are all good teaching strategies in my opinion and each has their place in the classroom. At my school, we’ve made the switch from a traditional spelling routine (spelling lists, memorization of words, test on Friday) to a […]

As the end of the school year approaches, students can often start to wind up. Think “senioritis” when you were a high school senior, but bottle up that same excitement in smaller humans. Every spring, come May or June, even a superstar teacher with the most effective classroom management system in place can still suffer the wrath of (dun dun DUN) chatty class syndrome, or as I like to call it, “June Bug.” Even if something has worked all year long, you may feel the need to reach into your bag of tricks for a little extra reinforcement.

Drawing pictures in the first days and weeks of school is always a wonderful way for students to settle in and also help decorate their learning space. Today I wanted to share a school bus directed drawing project with you. Easily incorporate it into a broader art activity by: encouraging students to extend the picture by adding extra details using art quality large paper using paint, oil pastel or water colors Directed Drawing Helps Students Learning to draw helps students become more creative and gives them confidence for writing activities. It helps build skills that will enable them to express themselves more confidently and creatively in the older years. Here are the free steps to follow to draw our cute school bus from right here on the blog (a printable version is for sale in our store too). After outlining in crayon, you could let your student paint with watercolor or bright poster paint. Find the printable pages, with writing papers, over in our store: This printable pack includes the project in 4 styles. These styles are repeated through every directed drawing printable we make. Classic Draw Our classic directed drawing is in a style that has been used traditionally for drawing activities. It has the steps and drawing space provided on the same page for students to simply draw, with guidance. Big Draw Big Draw is photographed here on our blog today and provides the steps on one page, and a page sized, bordered worksheet for students to create a large artwork. Draw and Write We created Draw and Write after we had made a few packets in our series. It has a blank space for students to draw (using the separate page of steps) and a few lines to write a sentence or two. Great for early emergent writers. Read, Draw, Write With more room for writing, we created this style worksheet to encourage students to use a word bank to stimulate ideas for writing. They follow the directed steps to draw a picture and then write a sentence or two about their picture or the topic. Your students will love completing more drawings and painting throughout the year, find our growing collection over on our resource page! Bus Bulletin Board We are also rolling back to 2016 to show you our 'display in a day' set for creating a bus themed door, window, hall or bulletin board. This set has blackline options. We have seen quite a few teachers just have their students paint a bus cutie of these to create a display rather than having them draw one. We hope you love bringing some drawing and creative joy to your classroom this back-to-school and are so glad you stopped by the blog. Have a wonderful day!
Love these "Love Monsters" I've been seeing on Instagram! Thanks @artolazzi , @mrsplouffsartclass and Painted Paper Art for the inspiration! This project was originally inspired by the book Love Monster. Here's how we will be creating our own! Pick your background color and use red or orange, to make your Love Monster. Fold your monster paper in half, and draw half a monster! Cut out and glue to your background. Next, I used scrap paper to cut out hearts to decorate the background! After the were glued down, I drew and cut out my eyes and teeth. When that was glued on, I started outlining the hearts, and adding to the face, with a tiny paintbrush and tempera paint. Then, I used a piece of cardboard, dipped in the same black paint, to add fur to my love monster. Can't wait to try this with 1st grade! Stay tuned for some awesome art!! Check out these cuties from Mrs. Ross' class!! Some fabulous first grade examples from Mrs. Walker's class! Sweet lil Love Monsters from Mrs. Black's class! Hi, Teaching Friends! Keeping your little guys engaged in learning as the school year winds down and during the summer takes some creativity and ingenuity. After all, you're competing with sounds of water fun and the bells of the ice cream truck! For most little learners, pages in a workbook just won't do it! Novelty is the name of the game. Break out the dice and the dominos for some engaging ways to make practice fun! To create this activity for number combinations, I wandered the aisles of a craft store looking for my inspiration. Here's what I came up with. This felt flower measures about 12 inches across, and also comes in purple and in green. The cost was under $1.50, and you'll need one for each player. I think the size, color, and texture of the flower bring some extra interest to these activities, but you could of course save a bit of money by having your children just use paper and crayons to color and cut out their own eight-petal daisies, or even eight-legged spiders. You'll also need dice and dominos for these games. You probably already have dice as a component of another board game. No dominos? Print a free set here from Mrs.Magee at TPT! Having your students sort out the dominos needed for each of these games is part of their learning, so be sure to let them do the "work" of finding the dominos they'll be using! For the first level, they'll need to sort out dominos whose dots total from one to six. They'll then each put one domino on each of the petals of their flower. Players take turns rolling one die, looking for a domino that totals the number they rolled. If they have one, they remove that domino from their flower. Here, the player rolled a three and is removing a 2+1 domino. If the player has no domino that totals the number, he misses that turn. The first player to remove all of the dominos from his or her daisy is the winner. Level Two is played the same way, except that this time players will be rolling two dice and will need dominos that total 2 through 12. Roll, add, and find a domino with the same sum. Here, the player has rolled a two and a six, and is removing a 4+4 domino. This game could easily be adapted to other skills. For example, take a set of alphabet or sight word flashcards and number all of the cards in the set with the numbers one through eight. Write the numbers one through eight on the flower petals (or use cute number stickers!). Players turn over a card, read the word or say a word that begins with the letter, and then cover the corresponding number on their flower, continuing to play until one player has covered all of his or her petals. I'm sure you can think of lots of other ways to use this for skills practice! Here's another way to practice lots of skills this summer. You can download this free board game by clicking on the picture. Then fill in each space with a word, number, or other fact that need more practice, get a die or a spinner and you're ready to go! Here are two seasonal math game sets from my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Click the picture to see them! Enjoy playing games! Although there's a lot of learning to be had through technology, don't undervalue the time spent with your children playing games like these. You are sending the message that learning is so important to you that you're willing to put your own time into it ... and even more important, that you love to spend time together, having fun while you're learning! ***** If you like ideas like this one, you'll love the Primary Inspiration Newsletter! Click on the picture below to subscribe and you'll receive this set of math riddle cards for first and second grade, just to say thanks! Happy Teaching!
