Quiet book pages can be very simple. Or not so . . . the choice is yours. I found a very cute coiled felt snake while searching the internet. He is very basic --- a simple green snake with button eyes and a felt tongue. I love him. The end of his tail was fastened to the unadorned background page so he could be uncoiled and recoiled. Since babies like to touch things long before they can actually do them, I like to have a lot of different "feels" on each page. So, using the basic idea I took it a few steps further. My Snake in the Desert Quiet Book Page I added rickrack and sew-on google eyes (I use dental floss or fishing line to sew on eyes, beads, buttons, etc. so there is no chance of them coming loose and creating a choking hazard.) I saw a darling alligator page, with a zipper jaw, that had a simple bird perched on the gator's head. I didn't want to do the gator but I loved the bird so here he is! I am not sure a ladybug* is a desert dweller but I had some and I thought they were fun. *I use lots of "foamies" stickers on the pages because there are so many different fun ones BUT I don't rely on the sticky part (except to hold them in place as a sew around** or over** or through** them). ** Around them with a whip stitch, over the narrow parts with an overcast stitch, or through them as you see the bead spots on the lady bug. (simply clean the needle with rubbing alcohol to remove the sticker substance after you have finished sewing through the foamies.) Because I am a creative cheapskate I search the thrift shops for things I can use. (sometimes I find something that has me creating a way to use it.) I make it a goal to never pay full price for anything. I always wait for a sale ( the 9x12" felt pieces were on sale for 20 cents each) or use their coupons when I buy something at the expensive craft stores. And, I always check the dollar stores first, followed by the discount stores. The cute little dimensional stickers were just a dollar a package at Wal-Mart ---- and they had many different types. The "foamies" brand stickers above were purchased with a 40 percent off coupon. The large ladybug was from a packet I was given as a gift because my friend knew I loved them. Because figuring out how to do the snake was a bit challenging I am going to provide some illustrations and basic instructions. Step 1 Draw a rough pattern on a piece of white paper. I have a oval crock pot and the lid provided the perfect outer line. Place a sheet of tracing paper over the original pattern and trace it. (Actually I had to do this 12 times since I am making 12 books.) Place two different colors of 9x12 felt together and pin the tracing paper pattern on top of the two. Step 2 Notice I don't center the pattern on the piece of felt because I want as much felt left over as possible to use for other things. Carefully sew around the outline, around the snake, and then once again, a very short distance away from the first stitching. When sewing most items to the backing page it is not necessary to match the bobbin thread with the top thread because the bobbin thread will not show. For the snake you want to have the top thread match the top of the snake and the bobbin thread match the color of the belly of the snake, since they will both show. The two rows of stitching creates the narrow "path" where you cut the snake. Again, carefully, cut along the path between the rows. When sewing, I leave the mouth area of the head open so I can reach in and sew on the eyes and insert the tongue after the snake is cut out. Then I whip stitch that area closed. The most tedious part comes after the sewing and cutting! You must tear the paper away. Some comes off in fairly large pieces, some can be scraped off with a fingernail and you may have to use tweezers for the tiny remaining pieces, being careful not to catch the stitching. Be patient ---- they will finally all be gone, I promise. Next Steps Coil the snake on the page. Sew (by machine or hand, your choice) along a portion of the tail to keep him in place. Sew small pieces of Velcro type hook and loop to the underside of the head and the matching place on the background so the snake will stay coiled during non-play times. The snake can do more than just coil and uncoil. He can reach out and check out the bird and ladybug. (or I guess pretend to consume them!) Still I needed more. I didn't want to leave the area under the snake bare. But, I couldn't decide what I "wanted to be discovered" when the snake was uncoiled. I considered several different things ---- and rejected them. Until. . . "foamies" came to the rescue! Remember back to my first quiet book post when I said there would be ways for Dave to help with this project? He questioned the plain Velcro circle in the middle of the critters (it's matching circle is sewn to the underside of the head to keep the snake coiled). I didn't know what to do with it so, until then, I had chosen to just ignore it. Thanks to Dave's creativity the circle is now a little turtle.

Happy Friday everyone! I have a completely adorable and extremely well-made quiet book to show you today! Made by Katie for her son, this book is so cute I don't know what to do with myself. Her pages are just to die for - look at that cute purple bird on its nest! And the fishing page! And the butterfly that comes out of the cocoon! Her shapes & color matching page is really clever - one of the best ways I've seen of doing it. And I love the details she added - the wrap around cover with a buckle is so smart and looks so good, and each page have a border looks awesome. Take your time looking at all her pages, and enjoy! Lift the Velcro flap to find a mirror The clouds are pockets that hold little sky pieces for page 3 Open the curtains and find Velcro sky pieces (sun, clouds, rain, snow) Three little eggs can be taken out of the nest Weave the pie crust "Catch" the football and practice tying the laces Colorful "worms" are ribbon pulls, and three finger puppets (dog, cat, and bunny) can be taken out of the bushes Match by color and shape, snap into place Button the flowers Fish can be moved up and down Latch the dog collar and leash Open the mailbox to find mail; move the flag up and down Unzip the cocoon to find a butterfly Tuck the kiddo into bed (magnets hold the blanket down) Interview What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence. My name is Katie and I am a working mom in St. Paul, Minnesota. Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they? I made this book for my son, who just turned two. What's your level of sewing experience? Beginner. How long did it take you? I worked on this very slowly over the course of ten months. Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? I did not use any templates, but I based many pages off of ideas that I found online. How did you bind your quiet book? Large eyelets and binder rings. What material are the pages made out of? Felt. What other materials did you use? Various fasteners and other pieces (ribbon, fabric, beads). How much did all the supplies cost you? I didn’t keep track, but I had to buy everything new, including the eyelet kit. What's your favorite page? Why? My personal favorite is the fishing page, but I also like how the bird page turned out. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome book with us, Katie! What a treasure for your son! I previously posted the Old Testament of my mom's quiet books she made for us as kids and I wanted to make sure to follow up with the New Testament book as well. So, here it is: The cover: Here are the Nativity page & the Wise Men page. Here they are in action. On the nativity page Mary, Joseph & baby Jesus are removable. The wise men page was hard to show but they have little stone gems inside of the pockets. The one in the middle has a clear one and the one on the right has a blue one. Can you see them now? These next pages are of Jesus growing up as a carpenter and of him getting baptized. For the carpenter page you pull out the pieces of wood to build the table and chair. On the baptism page the white flaps open to reveal the dove that descends down on Jesus after being baptized. This used to be my favorite page as a kid: the Fisherman's page and the paralyzed man page. The fish are removable with snaps and can be put into the net. The crippled man is healed and stands up. This is the story of the Lost Sheep and the women with her offering. The shepherd finds his lamb in the thorns of a bush. You unbutton it and place it in the arms of the shepherd with another button. The women's bag opens with her offering coins inside and you can place it into the offering bucket. This is the Good Samaritan page and the Last Supper Page. The Good Samaritan removes some cotton balls, alcohol swabs and some warn out bandaids (not quite too sticky) and cleans up the wounds of the hurt man. The last supper pieces are inside the pocket of the table and match up to the shapes of a cup, and bowl of bread representing the communion. This was also one of my favorite pages: Jesus' Death on the cross and the Resurrection. It was probably hard to see but the crosses were in pockets lower on the page (made from felt and popsicle sticks) and were hidden again the black of the mountain, but they are now placed in the higher up three pockets and reveal the three crosses of Jesus and the two thieves. The rock on the opposite page rolls away to reveal Jesus alive again! I need to ask my mom about this page, not quite sure how this lacing one fits in. Anybody else have an idea? The opposite page however is of Paul spreading the word and establishing churches. The first page obviously unlaces. The page with Paul, the churches are removed from the Bible as he spreads the Word and velcro onto the different place. And this is the final page representing Jesus on the throne. I hope you all liked this. My mom remembers spending hours creating these two Bible books for us and I'm so glad she did! They've been around for over 30 years at least and have still held up quite well I must say. Thanks Mom for all your dedication in teaching us and surrounding us with the Word. I know this was just one of the many ways you did and now my girls can enjoy them too! Blessings to you all! Heather Joy
At the heart of Born to Run lies a mysterious tribe of Mexican Indians, the Tarahumara, who live quietly in canyons and are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world; in 1993, one of them, aged 57, came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing a toga and sandals. A small group of the world's top ultra-runners (and the awe-inspiring author) make the treacherous journey into the canyons to try to learn the tribe's secrets and then take them on over a course 50 miles long. With incredible energy and smart observation, McDougall tells this story while asking what the secrets are to being an incredible runner. Travelling to labs at Harvard, Nike, and elsewhere, he comes across an incredible cast of characters, including the woman who recently broke the world record for 100 miles and for her encore ran a 2:50 marathon in a bikini, pausing to down a beer at the 20 mile mark.

So, my main inspiration for wanting to provide these quiet books for my girls is because my mom had made them for us as kids. She actually surprised me one time when she came to visit and brought the quiet books for my girls to now use. I can't tell you the memories that came flooding back with each turn of the page of this book. If you asked me what was in it beforehand I wouldn't be able to tell you but as I was looking through it the first time in probably two decades I now remembered every detail and a new desire was placed in my heart....to create those same wonderful memories for my girls. So, with much love I wanted to show you the first of two quiet books from my childhood. This is the Old Testament quiet book. Here's the cover: Here are the Noah's Ark and Tower of Babel pages. Here they are in action. Noah's Ark unzips to reveal some animals. And the Tower of Babel has blocks in the pocket that you take out to build the tower. Here's the story of Lot & Sodom, and Abraham & Issac. In this page Sodom is burning and Lot's wife turns around and get's turned into a pillar of salt (white sandpaper). In the Abraham & Isaac page Isaac is removable and the ram is removed and takes his place as the sacrifice. These are the Jacob's Ladder & Joseph Colored Coat pages. On the Jacob's Ladder page the angels all remove on snaps and Joseph's coat buttons on and off. These pages are about Moses. The first is him as a baby in the reeds and the other is when he talks to God by the burning bush. You can flip down the grass reeds to reveal a baby Moses in a little basket. I'm not sure if there ever really was a baby but ever since I can remember it had just this little printed paper of a baby. The other page shows the burning bush. When he was there God told him to remove his shoes because he was on Holy ground, so you can remove the the latch on the sandal. These pages are about the priests of the temple and the rod of Aaron. The priest page has a removable jar lid that has a cotton ball with a perfume on it so you can smell it. Pardon my hand on the next page there was no way to photograph it without holding them open. But this is the rod of Aaron that blooms from the story in Numbers 17:8. This next picture is of the story in Numbers 21, where the the Israelites were once again grumbling and complaining God, so he sent some snakes to bite and kill most of them. He told Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on the pole and anyone who was bit could look to the serpent and live. (This blog has a cool explanation of the weird but interesting story in the Old Testament). Well, there you are. A wonderful an amazingly fun Old Testament Bible Quiet Book for you. My mom isn't sure what the name of the pattern was she purchased to make this but there was a pattern. But she made this in the 80's so not sure if we'd ever find out where she got the pattern from. But if anything it will give you ideas to start this wonderful journey of quiet book making! Hope to be posting the New Testament Quiet Book my mom also made soon! So, check back! Happy crafting and God bless!
Does my quiet book make me look fat? In this case... yes... I bet you've been wondering what I've been working on for the last, um... 6 months. This is it! Of course it hasn't been a non-stop project, I took plenty of breaks - but it HAS been a non-stop mess. Thank you to Brett and my Mom for looking the other way as I left the sewing machine and a number of scraps of felt and string all over our dining table for 6 months. Welp... here it is! I made the cover out of a pair of jeans (pocket and button/button hole waist band included), and a cream colored bag that already had handles on it. It doesn't really match the innards of the book, but it's sturdy material, and I think it works. The inside cover has a big green pocket that I plan on putting crayons and paper in. The first page is the "clock" page - my kids are going to know how to read a normal clock. I can't tell you how many times I had to take cell phones away in middle school because they "had to check what time it was" on their digital phone instead of the clock on the wall. Erg! Apple tree page. I added numbers to the apples, in case that's handy someday... why not? Ok... this is probably my personal favorite. Each fish and the hook has a magnet. I don't know why fishing with magnets is so fun... It's also good for learning how to do a drawstring and tying a bow. Gum ball colors! You have to match the word with the colored gumball, and to the outlines inside the machine. This page was surprisingly long in the making with all the embroidery. Flower buttons - the "vase" is also a pocket for holding them when they're not on the button centers. Tic-Tac-Toe. The balls were felt stickers that I stuck onto craft foam and cut out. Easier and more durable than felt, I thought. And adds a little bit of sportiness to the book. Counting bead thingy... My mom's book had one of these, and it never occurred to me that it was for counting - I just pushed the beads around or skipped that page. Shoe tying and buckling. I bought these pairs of shoes at DI for $2 total, cut off the thick soles, and then sewed them on to the book. They don't look perfect, but they'll work. Sure they'll probably have Velcro all their lives, but why not hope for more? One of my favorite pages in my Mom's quiet book was a weaving page... don't know why, it just was. I thought it kind of looked like a picnic blanket, so... I made a dinner set, to practice how to set the table. These are stowed under the woven blanket. This page kept me up at night, trying to figure out how I wanted to do it. It's supposed to be a caterpillar with letters making up the body. Each piece is double sided so that there are more letters to choose from - one side has the full alphabet, and I made more vowels and common consonants on the other side. But they're all mixed up, so the kiddos will have to do a lot of searching anyway. The trunk is just a big pocket with a zipper for all the pieces. The "cool" part is that each piece has a magnet inside, and the background has a couple small metal shingles behind the fabric for them to stick to. So they're kind of like refrigerator letter magnets. Noah's Ark - the only semi-churchy page. There are entire books with spiritual themes, but... mine isn't one of them. I bought the finger puppets at IKEA (and then ran out of the store as quickly as I could manage through the maze - I hate that place). There are 10 puppets... this is partly why the book is sooooo fat, that boat is bulging. Obese hair - just like me! The top of the braid between the two ribbon bows is already done and sewn down, but the rest can be loosened for practice. The front of her dress is a pocket for elastics. I saw this online, and just really liked it - don't know why... They're supposed to be carrots, beets, and onions - all of which I like. The "dirt" is just a flap so that I can get the veggies back down through the holes. Also saw this online, although I added some things like a loop over a handle for the upper door and a hook for the lower door. Who knew there were so many different types of closures to practice. And behind the doors are... More finger puppets - handmade this time. Last page... I was going to do a Mr. Potato Head, but found this idea instead. The felt circles are sewn down, and the purple pocket (on the inner sides of the cover again), is full of felt shapes. I liked that there's a lot more room for creativity with this than with the classic Mr. Potato Head. You can do whatever you want! And if the pieces get lost, you can always make more, or different ones depending on what you need. The End! I pinned almost all of this from other people's blogs on Pinterest - if you want to see the original inspiration pages, go there.
Well first a huge apology for disappearance, I've had rather a lot of things going on (still have really but had a spare bit of time to do ...
