ABC's in Acts: P is for Pray and Peter and Prison! Prayers for Peter in Prison These lessons can be used without the alphabet theme. Consider these an update with new ideas and printables! Printable Envelope that the student 'Flips' (turns around) and turns from prison to the outside gate, to the house with Peter and an angel Stand-Ups. Peter has chains on one side and is knocking on the flip side. A fill-in-the-blank worksheet, secret code worksheet and a picture code worksheet are included with teacher's answer sheets. A maze, word search and crossword with answer sheets are included. These printables can be used for this lesson and any other appropriate lesson and were kept plain intentionally for this purpose. Students can color or paint the designs on the banner, door hanger, poster and bookmark. Stickers can be added. String or ribbon can be added to the banner to hang and on the bookmark. I designed the Trip Strip to be a cut & glue timeline. This one shown has lines for the students to write about each event. Or they can write the scriptures. There is another worksheet without the writing space. These can easily be used for mixed age groups. Cut and glue according to directions. This is not included in the application pack. Abraham is a long lesson and can be divided into two lessons. Here is what is studied: God’s promise to Abram, birth of Ismael and Isaac, the angels visit, Abraham tries to save Sodom & Gomorrah, the sacrifice and the cave he purchases as a burial place. Abraham is found in Genesis 11-25. The following posters, worksheets and more are in the lesson and application pack. These posters are included in the application pack. This is an Abraham's Life Sequencing Timeline. There is a completed one (right) for a teacher's visual, if you are keeping a notebook and just want it as a chart, or you do not like the cut and glue. If the students only put glue above the dotted line, they will have a lift-the-flap with the information under each photo. There is a poster with the people that were in the cave that Abraham purchased with Sarah. Students can fill in the worksheet if this is something you want to discuss. The other worksheet is a favorite and so easy. You just need lots and lots of stars. I give the students stickers, but you can purchase star stampers and ink stamp pads to use. Into the woods ... in the classroom!
This is such a fun lesson! Review: We studied about Jacob last week. He married Leah first after working 7 years, even though he wanted Rachel. He had to work another 7 years to marry Rachel. God told them to leave Laban’s, and, on the way, Jacob wrestled with an angel and God changed his name to Israel. He also saw his brother Esau and he forgave Jacob for everything. Jacob had 12 sons, which are also called the 12 tribes of Israel. The lesson is found in Genesis 37. The 2 younger brothers were named Joseph and Benjamin. The next couple of weeks, we will discuss Joseph. Moses tells us about Joseph in the last 13 chapters of Genesis. Joseph is now 17 years old, and he is helping his brothers feed the animals. Jacob was rich in animals. He loved Joseph the most of any of his sons. **He was born when Jacob was old, and his mother was Rachel who Jacob loved. Jacob gave a Joseph a coat of many colors. His brothers were so jealous when they saw that coat! They didn’t like it that their father loved Joseph the most. They were so angry at Joseph for that, and they couldn’t even talk to him! Joseph had a dream and when he told his brothers about it, they were even angrier! He told them, “In the dream, we were out in the field, and we were binding sheaves. My sheaf stood up and all of your sheaves bowed down to my sheaf.” So, they asked him if he thought that meant that he would reign over them. And they really didn’t like that idea! Joseph had another dream and told them that the sun, moon and 11 stars bowed down to him. Even his father asked him why he thought that people would come and bow down to him. His brothers went to feed the animals and Jacob called to Joseph and told him to go check on his brothers. His brothers saw Joseph coming from far away and decided to kill him. They said, “Here comes the dreamer.” But Reuben saved Joseph by saying, “Let’s not kill him, let’s just throw him in this pit!” So, when Joseph came to them, they grabbed his coat from him and threw him in the empty pit. The brothers sat down to eat, and some Midianite traders came by and they decided to sell Joseph to them instead of killing him. They sold him for 20 pieces of silver. The traders took Joseph into Egypt and sold him to Potiphar. He was an officer of Pharaoh’s and the captain of the guard. When Reuben returned and saw Joseph was gone out of the pit, he ran to his brother’s to ask what happened to him. They said they sold him and they were happy they didn’t have to kill him. They killed a baby goat and dipped the coat into the blood and took the coat back to their father. When Jacob saw the coat he knew that Joseph had been killed by an animal. Jacob wept for Joseph and said he would miss him for the rest of his life! The next 2 weeks, we will talk about Joseph’s life while he lived in Egypt. Today's project is a cut & glue, but I had the pit for Joseph ready for class. There is clipart for the pit, but I purchased 12x12 scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby. The paper is from The Paper Studio and is called dirt (item # 686279). I cut the 12x12 paper into 6" squares. Then, I folded over the 2 side edges about 1/4" and the bottom about 1/4". I cut the bottom corners and the bottom sides off to make it flatter to glue. Please see the above picture, they 4 pieces I cut looked like triangles. The above picture shows how I glued the pit to the worksheet. The bottom is flat, and I pushed the top sides in a little to it would be rounded like a pit and not flat against the paper. There is also a colorful coat for Joseph, but can be removed before he is thrown into the pit! This is what the project looks like finished. You can print it here. We did the above project during the lesson, then after the worksheet review, we played with this! I found the idea on Pinterest here. I cut the same 12x12 sheets of the dirt paper (see above) in half and stapled the ends together to make the round pit. I was looking for the smiley bendables, but since I couldn't find them, I used these parachute guys for Joseph. (Hobby Lobby, party section) I cut knit (non-fray) fabric and covered him, and added a head cloth. I used string (jute) as a belt to hold everything on. (I used glue dots on the head for the head cloth.) I used the fishing string and poked it through the fabric, through the holes for the parachute string and tied it up for the kids to hold and "Put Joseph in the hole!" Our lesson today takes a look at Peter's Vision. We will talk about the Old Testament laws concerning clean and unclean animals. We will also learn about Peter visiting Cornelius. There are a couple of puzzles for today's printables. The Bible scripture can be found in Acts 10:1-48 and today we are studying about Cornelius. He lived in Caesarea and was a centurion (captain of 100 men) of the Italian Regiment (military). He was faithful and feared God. He gladly gave gifts to the poor and he prayed a lot. About three in the afternoon an angel of God came to him and said “Cornelius.” He was scared when he saw the angel! The angel told him that God has heard his prayers. The angel told him to "Send for Simon Peter, and he will tell you what to do." The angel left and Cornelius told two servants and a soldier to go to Joppa to get Simon Peter. It was a 10-hour trip. The next day, at about noon, Peter went to the housetop to pray. He was very hungry, and he fell into a trance. Peter saw the heavens open up and something like a huge sheet tied by its four corners come to earth. It had all different kinds of animals on it. Peter wondered what that meant. This happened three times, and then went back up into heaven. (Acts 10:16) (In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. ESV) While he was thinking about it, the three men sent by Cornelius asked if Peter was there. Peter went down and told them that he was the Peter they were looking for. After they explained why Cornelius sent them, Peter invited them into his house. Peter got up in the morning and prepared to travel with Cornelius’ men. Peter took six Jewish believers along with him on this journey. They split the traveling into a two-day journey from Joppa to Caesarea. When they went into the house, all the people that Cornelius had invited were there to greet Peter. God sent Peter to teach Cornelius and his family. Peter told them that God doesn’t show favoritism. Everyone is treated the same in every nation that fears Him and is faithful to Him. Peter told them about Jesus and how He died. He said that we are commanded to preach to all people so all can go to Heaven. The thing was that at any other time, Peter and Cornelius wouldn’t be seen together, especially talking to each other because it was unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with someone from another country. But when the people that were at the house of Cornelius heard what Peter had to say, they believed. The last verse (Acts 10:48) states that Peter told them to be baptized in the name of the Lord and then they asked Peter to stay for a few days with them. (Bible verse for today.) I've always thought the story of Jacob marries Rachel and Leah rather ironic in light of his treatment of his brother, and we loved learning more about Jacob.

In class we were learning about Jacob and Esau. We talked about their differences. I made pocket chart cards to sort in the pocket chart during our lesson. Then for our craft, each child got a 12x18 piece of construction paper and 2 paper doll die-cuts. They made one look like Jacob and one look like Esau. They also labeled each side and glued on the man. The word strips were pre-cut and in baggies. We would all search for the same strip then glue it on the correct side.
