Stephen was a leader in the early church. We read about him in the Book of Acts. He was a servant and witness to Jesus, but when the Jewish leadership became angry with him, they stoned him. Paul was among those who wanted him dead.
This week’s lesson was a super fun one for our little ones! The focus was on God’s promises, so we started by talking about a promise that we had learnt a couple of weeks before. We remember that God had made a promise to Noah to save him and his family from the flood and we saw […]

(Mark 1:14-22) At first glance, today's scripture appeared very simple... too simple for a game. There are a plethora of fish crafts but, we haven't played a game in a while, and I had my heart set on having an active activity this week. I read the scripture over and over trying to pick out enough details to support a game. As the week waned, I tried to talk myself into a craft anyway. But I couldn't do it. Thankfully, I awoke Saturday morning with this game idea: Supplies: Colored cardstock Scissors Sharpie Any fish drawing Bean bags (hacky sacks would work well, too) Questions (click to download) Optional: Blue plastic disposable table cloth If you do not want to draw your own fish, or have a picture you can use, you are welcome to download mine here. (Of course, this is for your private use only, and you may not sell the image or anything made from it.) Pre-class Instructions: 1. Using a copy machine or printer, copy the fish image onto 18 pieces of colored cardstock. 2. Cut out the fish. 3. Write one question on the back of each fish. Notice there are only 9 questions, but I have instructed you to cut out 18 fish. Each question will appear on two fish. This allows the game to be played in teams (each team getting their own set of questions/fish, or when there are only a few kids playing, the repetition will help them learn the correct answers.) 4. Print out the question & answer sheet in case it is needed during game play. How to play: 1. If using a blue tablecloth to mimic water, spread it on floor. 2. Spread the fish, face up, on top of the water. If not using the tablecloth, just spread the fish in a smallish area on the floor. 3. Pick a spot on the floor where the kids will stand when it is their turn. I used a rug we have in our room. I simply told them they could not step off the rug during their throw. 4. Each child gets one throw at a time. They are to toss the bean bag in an attempt to land on a fish. 5. When they land on a fish, they get to turn it over and read the question aloud. If they get the answer right, they get to keep the fish. If they do not know the answer, the fish must be returned to the sea, face up. Be sure to tell everyone the correct answer so the next time someone lands on that fish, they will know the answer. 6. The team or child with the most fish at the end of the game wins. I totally ripped this one off a German Sunday School lesson site. Anyways, I refined it so that you can make the least amount of cuts (in case you, like me, are in charge of preparing crafts beforehand.) This one teaches the story of Jesus healing the paralyzed man really well. As I said, I did rip it off a German site, but I added the verse in English at the top. You need: cardstock, scissors (or cutter), Exacto-Knife, and crayons (optional) First off, you want to cut the "ribbon" part away from the main part. You can do this with scissors...or you can do it with my new favorite office tool: The paper cutter! Cut one: Cut two: (Throw the right-hand portion away.) Next, stack all your "main portions" on top of each other so they are perfectly even. Then, very carefully, and with your non-dominate hand pushing down on the top of the stack (and your thumb out of the way!!!), pull the Exacto-Knife through all four cutting places. If your stack shifts during the cut, restack and press the stack harder with your non-dominate hand. Cutting through the stack like this kills several birds with one stone. First off, you can cut through 2-4 pieces of cardstock at a time--saving time. Secondly, you don't have to worry about cutting through to your table when you do it this way. Okay, here is how you thread the "ribbon" portion through. Remember to thread it through all four slits. The first scene you should see is the man being let down by his friends in the top window, and Jesus looking up in the bottom window. Keep pulling and you will see the man and Jesus interacting. Finally (and don't pull too hard here or you will have to re-thread!), you will see where Jesus healed the man who is now holding his bed. Template: The End!

Jesus Walks on Water I have the last two lessons out of sequence. That's what happens when you go on vacation and then try to catch up! So, Jesus walking on water comes before His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. I'm not including an Easter lesson because at our church we have a sunrise service and no Sunday School that day. Here's the lesson on Jesus' Walking on Water. Print these out on card stock. I usually cut them out prior to the class because the younger children have a hard time cutting them out. This past Sunday we continued in our lessons on the Judges! The children were greeted by BIG blow up palm trees. They knew they were in for an exciting lesson. We talked a bit about Shamgar...he killed 600 Philistines with an OX goad. He was a brave man! However, after he died the Hebrews returned to their evil ways...and God allowed them to be oppressed. One of my students asked me, "Why did the Hebrews do this? Why didn't they learn their lesson?" I guess that is the questions we all have when we study the history of the Judges. My visual aids for the story were these 3D visuals. I have had these Palm trees for YEARS, They came in a kids meal when my daughters, who are now 22 & 21 years old, were very young, I have used them time and time again for Bible stories. I purchased the little people from $Tree and Mardels. She is supposed to be Delilah...but, she served as Deborah for today. He is supposed to be an apostle, but today he is Barak. :-) I always try to multipurpose my visuals. Our "Take Home" activity was a palm tree with Deborah sitting beneath it. This was made out of card stock....tape and glue. It was a relatively cheap "Take Home." The kiddos LOVED having their own palm tree! This is what they looked like prior to being colored and assembled. Our Memory Verse is Psalm 92:12. We have a little tune that goes with the Memory Verse. The kiddos seem to have it memorized prior to leaving class. The will make it easy to say it on Wednesday night. I am sure the will ALL be putting up their MAP piece, for knowing their Memory Verse this Wednesday. :-) For our REVIEW GAME we "grew" a palm tree. The kiddos added a Palm Leaf to the tree, by answering questions from the lesson. The leaves have velcro on the back for easy attach-ability. This was very easy to make. I used Printmaster (a computer program) to print the palm tree out as a poster. I made extra leaves and added the velco after laminating. I think it is very cute. Our map is filling up! The kiddos are amazed at all the places and events that have happened. This map makes it easy for us to review places we have learned in the past. Kids LOVE maps!!! As a special treat I gave each of my students a Palm Tree bottle....I told them that every time they use this bottle they need to remember the story of Deborah...and the other Judges. Their Explorer Journal Activity for Wednesday will be a picture of Deborah with palm trees in the background. The palm trees are made from the foam fun material that can be purchased at any craft store. That will make the palm trees 3D. Of course, we all know that Deborah sat beneath the Palm trees in the mountains of Ephraim, between Ramah and Bethel. Teaching on the Judges is an exciting endeavor. The boys in my class are LOVING these lessons. The girls were glad to know that there was a woman judge too. I believe in teaching the Bible as it was written. God wants all of HIS word taught....even though some of the lessons are a bit violent we will be learning about these Mighty Men (and woman) of God. Blessings, Ronda
