Third graders have also been learning about art from India. They looked at examples of dhurrie rugs and created their own with cut paper and yarn. -Dhurries are flat, woven rugs used as floor coverings. -They've been made for centuries in India. -They are made with bright colors, simple designs like stripes, geometric shapes. -They are woven out of camel and goat hair. -Royal families would use dhurri rugs to decorate the floors of their palaces.

Aloha friends! How is your summer going? I am all over the place with creating, reading, cooking, cleaning etc... But I am loving every minute of it. Today I am linking up with Tara for one of my favorite linky parties during the summer to show you how I created my own seat sacks. I have always wanted to get seat sacks for my classroom, but they are pretty pricey and I don't like the colors that are available commercially. I borrowed a seat sack from a colleague to see how difficult it would be to make. This is what it looked like and I wanted them to fit my 12" chairs that I have in my classroom. Simple enough. Pocket in front and pocket in back to hang. (These are available on Amazon, just click the picture) So I headed out to the ONE fabric store we have on island hoping to find some Duck Cloth. Score!!! I found all of the colors I wanted and bought a yard of each. The pink, yellow and green were a poly/cotton blend and only cost $6 a yard. The blue and purple were duck cloth and cost $9 a yard. The cloth was 58" across so I was able to cut out 4 pieces from a yard - 14"x36". I sewed up the edges on opposite sides. Then I measured 6" for the pocket that connects to the chair. (That was what the seat sack I borrowed measured) I pinned it and then I pinned the book pocket up to meet it on the opposite side, but I did not overlap them. Then I sewed right up both sides. Turn it inside out and you are done! I had a workshop at school so I took one with me to see how it would fit on my chairs. They look awesome!! I was able to make 4 from one yard of material. That comes out to $2.25 a sack for the duck cloth! The others were only $1.50 each. I'm calling this a win :) I can't wait to see how they all look when I head back to the classroom. (Well I think I can wait, I'm not quite ready to go back yet!) What crafty things have you been up to? Head over and link up with Tara or just check out the other awesome craftiness.

For a few years, I've done an abstract project involving line, color, and sweet lil' second graders. Recently, I saw images of artwork by Jean Dubuffet that reminded me of said project. So this year, I've incorporated the two. There are other Dubuffet lessons out there; I found the following before re-styling my own: Dali's Moustache Kids Artists Hands, Head 'n Heart in the Artroom Prior to seeing his work, I didn't know much about Dubuffet. If you're in the same boat, check out the following references that really helped me out: Dubuffet.com MoMA Poul Webb Art Blog Art Smarts 4 Kids Here's what we did. First, we began by filling a 9x12" white piece of paper with a 'controlled scribble,' allowing our imaginations and our pencils dance around the page. The kids did this on both sides of the paper before consulting tablemates to choose their better side. Then, pencil lines were traced with a fine-tip black Sharpie. We erased any peek-a-boo pencil lines. Kiddos colored a few spaces with the Sharpie, while other sections were filled with linear patterns using a white crayon. Everyone's abstract shape was cut out. Next art class, the watercolors came out and the artists went to work! Students were limited to two colors of their choice (like Dubuffet and his limited color palette). Some spaces were left white, while others got the bold color treatment. When works were dry (within a few minutes), they were mounted onto paper. Glue stick glue was put on all edges of the pieces, but pushed down in select locations to create 3D sculptures, a la Dubuffet. They were THRILLED with their (simple) sculptures! And I have to say that I agree--the results are simple yet arresting. Cutting a few of those black lines for more dimension While we worked, we listened to a bit of music that Dubuffet had put together: http://www.ubu.com/sound/dubuffet.html The kids' reactions were quite entertaining! This was a quick two-day project that gave us room to finish any previously incomplete projects (in this case, Gators), and fostered peer helping, as some kids 'got' it more than others. I look forward to finishing this project with my other second grade sweeties!

We started our Sunday School Creation: Day 2 – God made the Sky lesson by revising the previous lesson. “After God made the light, God looked out over the world and there was water E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E!” I told my kiddos. “I don’t know about you, but I’m not a good swimmer at all.” I asked my little dears […]

For our 2015 Activity Day theme, we decided to do a Mission Possible theme. We were inspired by Pinterest with a lot of our ideas. The mission we desired for the girls to accomplish this year is having them memorize the Articles of Faith. Scripture Theme: Invitation: I had the opportunity of designing and putting these cute invites together. Supplies: manila folders, labels, paper clips, card stock for the cipher card, paper cutter, regular paper for the documents, scissors, glue, Credits: The mission labels are from Inkablinka. I got the cool cipher alphabet card from Take the Side Street Blog, United States Seal, and office manila folder template is from Mirk Wood Designs. Decorations: We made a few signs: A Mission Possible poster, Restricted Access Agents Only, Agents Report Here, 13 Footprints, Welcome Top Recruits Level 8-11, Scan to Enter, and the United States Seal on podium. We set up a desk for check in and had each girl finger printed by the entrance. Finger Print Decoding: We had the girls use their magnify glasses to read the tiny finger print which contained the 13 Articles of Faith, which was made by Linda. We also printed out the keywords worksheet using this Articles of Faith Puzzle. Linda made a transparency of Jesus Christ for a visual aid while talking about having the light of Christ in our lives. Secret Package: We gave each girl a bag filled with Special Training Devices such as: a tiny magnify glass, Articles of Faith music CD (Credits: paper is by Shabby Princess, Nancy Drew Silhouette but Linda put a hat on her, footprints Stock Illustrations , magnify glass, thought bubble, and reprise title font) an activity day schedule for the year, a calendar of each Article of Faith, Articles of Faith Memorization Cards are from Sugar Doodle. Badges: I made these badges for the leaders and activity day girls. The leaders wore lanyards around their necks while the girls had stick on badges. Credits: We Believe in Obeying the Law badges Mormon Mommy Blogs, Spy clip art is from Can Stock Photo, and the fingerprints are from My Paper Crane . Refreshments: Cupcake and water (made by Shannan and Amy). The cute cupcake toppers were designed by Linda. Article of Faith Match Up Game: The girls had to match up the numbers to the right Article of Faith, which was printed under the footprints.

TUTORIAL FOR LIZARD HEAD HERE http://www.elementaryartfun.blogspot.com/2013/05/catching-up-lots-of-fun-stuff.html I have been so busy lately and have hardly had time to blog. Thank you so much for the Versatile blogger awards. I will eventually get some time to reciprocate! I appologise! I really appreciate all my readers and your sweet sweet comments. I have two high maintenence toddlers at home that keep me on my toes! We have been doing so many things in here and I need to catch up and bring my camera this week to update the latest. Here are some things from a few weeks ago… These cubes are so easy to make and you can be so creative with what they put inside. Some kids put an alien inside, some made flowers, animals, tvs, and some made it into a giant robot head Ok this made my day. Today I had a parent tell me that they were on their way to the zoo and saw a painting of Van Gogh outside the art museum and the child said, “Look mommy, it’s Vincent Van Gogh!” It made the two weeks of yellow paint stains on my pants completely worth it!! Shout out to Artolazzi! Jenny Bartolazzi, you are a genius! Your ideas impress me and your posts never disappoint. I am so glad you blog so I can copy you! My kids are so happy with their chameleons because of you. I love the candid picture I caught of a student snuzzling up to her chameleons as though they were made out of velvet and purred like kittens!! You can find step by step instructions for these chameleons on her blog here: http://artolazzi.blogspot.com/2011/04/3-d-lizard-directions.html My kids used the same steps as we used on the bunny head to make the chameleon head They LOVED them. We watched these videos first, some of the other classes gave theirs sun glasses Some kids even made a cube cage for their Chameleons and I gave a prize to the one who could spell chameleon first! AND I will conclude with a random photo from one of my recent newborn photoshoots that has nothing to do with elementary art! This also keeps me busy! Is she not the cutest thing God ever breathed life into! www.shelbyjunephotography.com She makes my ovaries hurt!
