Flag Ponds Nature Park: Reviews from families visiting Flag Ponds Nature Park. Many families are familiar with the nearby Calvert Cliffs State Park where there is a two mile trail down to a beach on the Chesapeake Bay. The Calvert Cliffs are known throughout the area as a geologic feature holding a wealth of fossils and sharks teeth; over time these shark teeth and fossils have been washed by wind and weather into the bay. Now, especially during storms, they wash up on to the nearby beaches. When I was planning a trip to Calvert County searching for sharks teeth sounded like fun to me, but I didnt want to hike two miles to a beach with my young children; fortunately, the Calvert County tourism commission let me in on a local secret - Flag Ponds Nature Park. LOCATION Just north of Calvert Cliffs (and the nuclear power plant), the nature park has many trails along the cliffs, around and through the the area wetlands and down to the beach. The trail down to the beach is an easy 1/2 mile walk. On the day that we visited, we saw many young children running excitedly down the trail to the beach for the first 80 degree Sunday of spring. BEACH Once arriving at the beach, there is still a few hundred feet to walk to get to the water. There are all sorts of shells and pebbles mixed in with the sand - so my kids preferred wearing flip-flops. I walked it barefoot - but I would recommend water shoes for those with sensitive feet. Once we got down to the water, the sand was fine enough that my kids ditched their flip-flops. There are restrooms, water, and even a basket with some sand toys at the entrance to the beach. This park is obviously well-loved by the community. Some areas of the beach (to the north) are roped off for conservation. I was told by the ranger that it is OK to walk right along the waterline looking for sharks teeth - but this area is not open for play or sunbathing. In early May the water was cool - but relatively clean. As the beach is on the Chesapeake Bay, there are only tiny waves. My kids enjoyed playing in the water, and I wished that I had brought their swimsuits (being that it was 80 degrees outside.) SHARKS TEETH For the first 10-20 minutes at the beach, my five and six year old searched alongside my husband and I for sharks teeth using a plastic sieve. When they didnt find anything, they tired of searching and gradually transitioned to playing happily on the beach. When the kids were done using the plastic sieves, my husband and I began looking for sharks teeth. We both found one in about 5-10 minutes, scooping up pebbles and shells where the water was 2-6 inches deep and using the sieve to look through the larger pieces. In total, we found 5-10 sharks teeth in our two hour visit to the beach. Of course, being a parent, once I found a shark tooth - I would let the kids discover it in the sieve and put it in their pocket. My kids seemed satisfied with this. The day we were visited, there were several locals out on the beach who regularly comb the shoreline for sharks teeth. They were friendly and helpful. According to the ranger, December and January are the best time of year to find large sharks teeth. Bring waterproof waders and look in 6 inches of water for the best results. Brr.... VISITOR CENTER There is a friendly ranger sometimes available at the visitor center, and a few displays of sharks teeth. Disclosure: I was hosted by the Calvert County Tourism Commission for the purpose of this review. As always, all opinions are my own.
