Cervelo S5 Ultegra Di2 Disc Road Bike 2023 Cervelo's S5 Ultegra Di2 Disc is their fastest, most aerodynamic road bike that has seen many pro-level victories. The slippery carbon frame has been tweaked in line with the UCI’s slightly more relaxed regulations, with some deeper tube shapes and a reworked cockpit setup to reduce drag by a few more precious grams. This frame is now only compatible with electronic shifting and has sufficient tyre clearance for 34mm rubber within its sculpted shape. The instantly-recognisable aerodynamic V-Stem and handlebar arrangement is more adjustable and simpler now, with a small drop in weight into the bargain. Its lauded aerodynamic and handling advantages remain impressive and give the S5 an extremely purposeful-looking stance even when standing still. Cervelo has taken advantage of its in-house Reserve wheel brand and developed a 63/52mm tubeless-ready carbon wheelset that integrates perfectly into the frame. This not only reduces drag when tested in the wind tunnel but also shows improvements when faced with real-world situations where the yaw angle is constantly changing, leading to more stable handling and added speed. Ultegra Di2 is Shimano’s second-tier, 12-speed, electronic groupset. It gives virtually nothing away to the range-topping Dura-Ace version in terms of performance and offers near-instant shifting and impressive braking control. The system is part wireless, which means that it can be connected to a GPS head unit or a smartphone via Bluetooth, giving access to more information during and after a ride as well as some function customisation. Cervelo Soloist Force eTap AXS Disc Road Bike 2023 Intended as a one-bike solution for riders who relish speed on any course, the Cervelo Soloist Force eTap AXS Disc Road Bike borrows from both the S5 and R5 in its quest for performance. The frame’s geometry mirrors that of the highly successful R5 so it is plenty comfortable enough for long days and solo breakaways whilst still being fast and efficient enough at speed. Cervelo claims that the Soloist is 250 grams lighter than the S5 and faster than the R5. There are a number of practical touches that will be appreciated by home mechanics and privateer racers too; the bottom bracket is threaded for easier maintenance and replacement, there is space for 34mm tyres to increase the bike’s utility and Cervelo’s clever cable routing keeps everything out of the wind but doesn’t require a full bleed for a stem change or adjustment. Fully wireless and incredibly intuitive, SRAM’s eTap AXS system is a pleasure to use. With just a single paddle on either side, miss-shifts are all but impossible, and gear changes are rapidly and accurately performed, no matter the pressure on the pedals. SRAM’s X-Range concept uses smaller chainrings and a 10 tooth sprocket on the cassette to provide a wide range of gears with smaller gaps between them, making it easier to maintain optimum cadence. There is a Quarq power meter integrated into the chainset for more effective training and efficient riding. Bluetooth connectivity allows access to the AXS app for customisation options, system information and ride data whilst compatible head units can display gear selection and battery charge. Reserve wheels have quickly proven themselves to be light, fast and reliable. This aerodynamic 40/44 wheelset has a slightly shallower front rim for better handling and both rims have a very wide internal width for excellent sidewall support. Tubeless compatibility and Zipp hubs ensure top-drawer performance in every situation.
