Introducing the concept of the cell as a city. Each of the organelles in a cell performs a specific function. These functions can be related to the different parts of a city. I asked my learners…
Students will identify the functions of key organelles within cells. Then, they will compare each organelle to a structure, place, or person within a city necessary for the city to function. Then, they will create a miniature city with their comparisons and provide a legend to justify each choice. E...

Students first read descriptions of cell organelles placed at stations around the room and answer questions about them. Organelles Included: Cell Membrane, Cell wall, mitochondria, vacuole, nucleus, cytoplasm, chromosomes and chloroplasts. Reading simplified to a 4-7 grade level with the most important information. (http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Cell-Parts-Organelles-Descriptions-and-Analyzing-Questions-815804) Then For this project, you are to create a city where each part of the city has a matching part of the cell with a similar function. Requirements: • Design and create the city including all 9 cell parts listed below either as a one-dimensional drawing (using your own drawings or pictures from the computer), or a 3-D model. (You may use any materials you bring in—like boxes or clay, etc.) • Label each city part with its name and the name of the cell part that has a similar function • On a separate piece of paper, write a sentence for each cell part explaining why you matched it up with the city part you chose. Graphic Organizer and helpful hints are included... The Georgia Camo pattern in Flat Dark Earth is part of our GPS Camouflage™ series and is applied with our leading digital infusion process. Our process allows the graphic to be thermally bonded to the top layer of the KYDEX® thermoform sheet, yet maintains the original sheet's texture and size. By maintaining the most original sheet texture, our process allows the graphic to display a 3D depth like never before. This is the best infusion print on the market. The base sheet of this varient is .080 gauge, cell/smooth finish Flat Dark Earth Spring KYDEX®. For DIY thermoforming: Kydex Thermoform Sheet is very similar to both Holstex and Boltaron in the way it forms when heated and molded around an object. Once cooled, this material will keep the shape of the item that was used to mold the shape into place. In its cooled state, it is very durable and light weight. Easy to form: To use KYDEX thermoform sheet, score and cut a piece slightly larger than the object being covered. Heat the material to a 300-375 degree Fahrenheit range and place over object. Using forming foam, press the material around the object and allow it to cool in position. Once cooled, remove and sand edges to desired shape. (Detailed instructions included with order.) We offer KYDEX® Thermoform Sheets in multiple different options, these options can be found on our Etsy Shop at this link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CKKIndustries Specifications Material = KYDEX® Gauge = .080 inch Pattern = Georgia Camo - FDES Texture = Cell/Smooth Graphic Process - Digital Infused (This product is sold by the 11.50" x 11.50" sheet.) This is a differentiated assessment for cells. It is a menu of choices such as creating a crossword puzzle about cells or designing a travel brochure for Cell City. Students will learn and have fun at the same time! A rubric is also included.
This simple and easy-to-implement project is an exciting way to assess your student's knowledge about cell organelles and their functions! This lesson is designed to assess student knowledge about cell organelles and their functions using abstract thinking and a higher depth of knowledge level (specifically level 4, extended thinking). It should be used towards the end of a cell unit, after students have learned the concepts, as a way to creatively gauge their understanding. Using higher level thinking skills, students will make analogies between the organelles in a cell and the entities necessary to run a city... ultimately creating their very own cell city! Students apply a deeper level of understanding about the make-up of both plant-like and animal-like cells while also engaging their creative, artistic side. Throughout the project, students begin to see that, like a city, the cell requires all of its all organelles to survive; it operates as a system. This project can be given as an individual or group assignment. It can also be used as a stand-alone assessment or in conjunction with a more traditional type of assessment. The digital version of this project has been modified to offer students product choices. Specifically, students can create their cell city by making a map, writing a fictional story, or creating a comic strip. Differentiated rubrics are available for each of the projects (as PDFs in the Google file). Watch a preview video of the Google Slides here. Recommended Age Group: middle school, grades 6-8 Next Generation Science Standards MS-LS1-1 Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. MS-LS1-2 Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function. Common Core Standards - ELA RST.6-8.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts. WHST.6-8.7 Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration. Guiding Questions Can we model our understanding of cells in a different way? Included in this lesson: *Easy-to-Follow instructions with material suggestions *Rubrics for both the plant-like and animal-like cell city projects *Student worksheet for brainstorming ideas before getting started *Student reflection worksheet for after the project is created *Suggested responses for student worksheet *Teacher tips Looking for more lessons on cells? This activity helps students to understand the structures and organelles of a cell. They will research the functions of 10 major parts of a cell. Then, they will think of a place or structure in a city that does a similar function. Finally, they will draw out a map or blueprint of their city and label each structure. This activity can be done virtually or in class. This product includes: Teacher Directions-including prep info and materials needed Procedure for Virtual or In Class Student Packet-Short reading, data table to fill in, city directions and rubric Student Packet Answers Cell City Map Example Teacher Tips My students enjoy the creativity and artsy aspects to this activity. It really complements my 6th grade units on cells. It is also enjoyable for high schoolers. To do this activity, students will need: Pencil Copy of “Cell City” packet for each student (INCLUDED) Coloring utensils (colored pencils, crayons, markers, etc.) Research ability (like a chromebook and/or textbook) Optional: Colored Paper and Scissors Check out my Cell Song on YouTube! At some point in their education nearly every student will make a cell model, it might as well be fun! Check out these 10 awesome ways to make a cell model!
The assignment: to make an analogy of the parts of the cell. Kyler compared a cell to a city. I thought it turned out fabulous!
Plant and Animal Cells Labeling - Plant and Animal Cells Lab - Having trouble finding really good plant and animal cells for labeling? I did too. That's why I created these! Students will color, write in the function of the organelles, then use a straight edge to label the organelles. Plant and animal cells are on separate pieces of paper. Plant and animal cells observation lab sheet is also included. This is written at a middle school level. I have also included my analogy handout for "a cell is like a city." All answer keys are included. Ways to use these in your classroom: Assign plant and animal cells labeling as a small project, for homework, or to do with a sub The plant and animal cell lab is a GREAT starter lab for using the microscopes "The cell is like a city" worksheet is a great partner or group activity These materials are supporting materials for teaching cells and cell theory to middle school students. Enjoy teaching again! CrazyScienceLady
