4th Graders created these cave paintings using oil pastels and water colors. I purchased cave stamps and some of the students used them in their paintings. We looked at the cave of Lascaux' virtual tour and studied several different sections of the cave. We studied the animals and symbols found within several prehistoric painted caves. Creating art is a universal trait that makes humans unique, and people have been creating art longer than they have been writing. Students love learning about Prehistoric Art because it gives them a chance to connect people who lived thousands of years ago in different places of the world. The Lascaux Cave is one of the most famous Paleolithic archaeology sites. Located in France, the Lascaux Cave is home to many murals of animals that students can identify. The is a downloadable zip file with everything needed for a one class period art-making activity. There is a 2 page PDF lesson plan that explains all the steps and connects the activities with the National Core Arts Standards. The “Prehistoric Art-How to Draw Prehistoric Style Animals” PowerPoint presentation includes 40 slides. There are 3 slides that briefly introduce students to the Lascaux Cave. The first main section teaches students how to draw a horse in the Lascaux Cave style using step-by-step drawing instructions that the students can follow along with easily.
