This liturgical year lesson plan is meant to be an introduction to the Church year so students can understand Jesus is the reason for EVERY season.
Continuing my series on crafts related to the Creed... (for the rest, check out the "I Believe" activities under the Sharing the Faith tab above) Highlighting the Four Marks of the Church found at the end of the Nicene Creed, I made this craft as a vehicle for dicussing how the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Here are some topics I would teach as I made this with kids: -One= Christ founded one Church. It was never his plan for us to break into smaller groups with differing beliefs. When He comes again, we will all be united as one. -Holy= The Church is the spotless Bride of Christ, good and holy, even though it is made up of broken and fallen people. When He comes again, the Church will enter Heaven as His Holy Bride. -Catholic= The Church is universal. Our faith is for all people of all cultures of all times. When He comes again, we will see how all encompassing the Church really is. -Apostolic= The Church is founded on the teachings of the Apostles, and continues to follow their authority today through their successors the Bishops. We are blessed to have leadership in our time by those given authority from Christ. -The Church is not a building, but is the people. We are the Church, and we make up the Body of Christ. -We believe all of these things as we say the Nicene Creed- "I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church." So, for the craft, you will need a copy of the printable (link at the bottom of the post) and one piece of black construction paper for each kid, as well as various colored scraps of paper, glue, scissors, and a circle punch if you have one. First mission: color the pieces on the printable. I chose to leave the church and "Our Church Is..." white to represent it being the spotless Bride of Christ. Then cut them out. Second mission: cut open the doors on the solid lines and fold on the dotted lines. A little trick for kids having trouble-fold the church in half length ways and clip on the line. Then open it back up and cut the rest. Here is what it looks like after that step- Third mission: lay the church in the center of the black paper and trace the opening with a white crayon. (I love finding a purpose for the neglected white crayon in my Crayola box :) ) Fourth mission: Cut or punch out circle of various colors. This is step you could do ahead of time to speed things up if you are crafting with a large group. Glue the circles inside the white rectangle. Glue the church on over the circles without gluing down the doors. Then glue on the rest of the words like this: Fifth mission: glue the "We are the Church!" and the Ephesians verse on the inside of the doors. This is to remind the kids that we, all of the people of God, are the Church, and we are one body. Sixth mission: Go share it with somebody! Here is the link to the printable:

This is an original window that was salvaged out of the Mount De Chantal Visitation Academy in Wheeling, WV which was on the National Registry. This Catholic girls school was demolished in 2011. Virtue: A Habit to do the good, give the best of yourself, and be more like God in what you say and do. If it's in my room, odds are good it is going to be tied in with owls. Get it? The greatest of these is love? To tie in with our study of sainthood and the universal call to holiness, I decided to do a little more intentional instruction about the virtues. The Seven Sacraments: The object of the game is to collect 7 sacrament cards by answering questions about each sacrament. (For 2nd grade on up). Directions: Place your marker on the START square. The player rolls the die and moves that many spaces on the board. If the player lands on a ? space, the teacher asks them a question from the list about one of the sacraments that the person does not have a sacrament card of. If the player is correct, they collect the corresponding sacrament card that the question was about (the players place their sacrament cards face up in front of them so the teacher knows what kind of sacrament question to ask). If the player is not correct, they do not collect a card. If the player lands on “Return a Card” they must return a sacrament card. Players must collect a sacrament card for each sacrament as they move around the board. Note that the board is set up so you can move around it many times. The first player to collect all 7 sacrament cards, wins. Continue playing to find out who comes in second, third, fourth, etc. place. *You can play this game individually or as teams. I had a bit of a panic this week when I realised that I would be teaching the Beatitudes this Sunday. How do I explain 'humble', 'meek', 'righteousness' and 'merciful' to 5-7s without spending the whole session doing it? Even the simplest Bible translations used words they weren't going to understand easily! So I decided to make some colourful cards in child friendly language to explain what each statement meant. I included some symbols that might help explain because a lot of the children are like me and find pictures very helpful! I intend to use these symbols in real life form during the lesson. None of the explanations or symbols are perfect but hopefully they will help! An inflatable swimming ring to symbolise relying on God's help (poor in spirit) A sad face (mourning) A gift (humble- people who think of others before themselves etc) Scales (righteousness and justice) Cross (mercy and forgiveness) Heart (pure in heart) Dove (peacemakers) Handcuffed hand (persecuted) For a printable version of the cards click here

This weekend at Youth Group, we spring-boarded off of the Doubting Thomas Gospel read at Mass on Sunday. We talked about doubt, and how it is ok to ask questions about our faith as long as we investigate and look for the truth. With Easter just last weekend, I decided to share with the kids some historical and prevailing Anti-Resurrection theories. I debated how to present the material to the kids, and ended up doodling some stick figure representations of different ideas that people argue against the Resurrection. We used those as a springboard for discussion. The kids would make their own predictions about the theory and then we would tear it down with other background knowledge, Scripture, or logic. They really enjoyed the drawings, and thought that some of the ideas were ridiculous. It was interesting to listen to them argue about what made sense and what didn't. We closed by reading these verses: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." ~John 20:29 "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile." ~1 Corinthians 15:17 And by looking at the questions/answers of YouCat 96, 98, 101, 103-108, especially paragraph 105: "The disciples who before had lost all hope, came to believe in Jesus' Resurrection because they saw him in a different way after his death, spoke with him, and experienced him as being alive." (I love the YouCat, btw) Anyways, I didn't set out to have a lesson to share, but here is the handout that we used. Not super high quality, but available if someone else has a use for it. Today is the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. This days honors the sacrifices and struggles that Mary endured during her life as she participated in the redemptive mission of Christ. These seven sorrows remind us again that we can turn to Mary in all things, and she will direct us to her Son. All of the stories can be found in the Gospels, starting with this one: "and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” ~Luke 2:34-35 Today my students learned a little more about Mary and practiced looking up Scripture references. We have already been talking about the Immaculate Heart of Mary during our study on St. Maximilian Kolbe and the Miraculous Medal art project we made last week. I made some resources that you are free to use with your kiddos as well! I used the notes below and did a Bible Jigsaw activity. The kids each were assigned one of the Scripture references, and then had to look it up, read it, and summarize it. They shared that summary with the rest of the class and we decided what the sorrow was in the story. After they identified it, I gave them the "official" name and they wrote it in their notes. Then we went on to the next group and the next story until we had found all seven. This was a great method to review how to find things in the Bible and an effective way to hear all seven stories in a short amount of time (this whole activity took us about 20 minutes). We will save this info sheet and add it to our Fulton Sheen Notebooking Project in the Mary section. The kids just got to take home this stained glass one and could color it if they wanted or give it away to someone.
