St. Kateri was born near the town of Auriesville, New York, in the year 1656, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was four years old when her mother died of smallpox. The disease also attacked Kateri and transfigured her face. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle. Kateri became converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had to suffer greatly for her Faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of twenty-four. She is known as the "Lily of the Mohawks". Devotion to Kateri is responsible for establishing Native American ministries in Catholic Churches all over the United States and Canada. Kateri was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1943 and she was Beatified in 1980. Hundreds of thousands have visited shrines to Kateri erected at both St. Francis Xavier and Caughnawaga and at her birth place at Auriesville, New York. Pilgrimages at these sites continue today. Last week I posted a quick tour of my classroom in this video on Instagram. The most common question I got was about the details on this Eucharist bulletin board. Lucky for you I took some process videos and made a shareable version! This bulletin board is the first thing you see when you come in my classroom door, so I like to take the time to make it something eye catching and meaningful. With the Eucharistic Revival beginning this year, it seemed like a great theme to run with for the beginning of the school year. This bulletin board is good sized at around 45"x45". First I'll give you the steps for this version, and then I have an easy to print one further down in the post. -Cover bulletin board with black paper. I didn't want a border to distract from the quote/rays, so just trimmed the edges carefully. -To make the Monstrance, I found a photo of a Monstrance that I liked online and projected it on my smartboard. With the touch sensitivity turned off, I taped a piece of kraft paper to the smartboard and "traced" the Monstrance with a black marker. It really was a rough trace- it doesn't have to be perfect. It will still look quite detailed from a distance, so don't go crazy trying to get every little line! -I then used some gold acrylic craft paint to add some highlights to the Monstrance. Again, not going for perfection, just some shiny details. Up close it is far from perfect, but on the bulletin board it looks great. -Cut a host out of white paper and attached to the Monstrance. Hung in the center of the bulletin board. -Lettered "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" on white paper and hung at the bottom, kind of like an altar cloth beneath the Monstrance. -Wrote out a series of Eucharistic quotes from Scripture and the Saints. (List included below). I wrote them with black marker on old adding machine tape, which was way easier than cutting paper. I did a little rough measuring to know how long the lengths of paper needed to be, and then chose the length of quote to fit. -Tucked the end of the rays of white paper under the edge of the Monstrance and had the radiate off the sides of the bulletin board. I now wish that I would have made them all about 2" longer so they all hung off the edge, symbolized the effects of the Eucharist in the world... but wasn't crazy enough to redo them. ;) You might be thinking, "That's nice Katie, but that is a whole lot of work for a bulletin board." So I also have a printable version for you! :) I made this one with bright paper just for something different, but you could do the exact same thing in black, white, and gold if you like. I don't have anything that can print on paper larger than 8.5"x11", so I printed this Monstrance image using the poster feature in Adobe Acrobat Reader. In the print dialogue, click on "Poster" and then change the tile size to something larger like 150% or 200%. It will print on several sheets of paper which you can trim and tape together to make it as large as you like! Here is mine on 4 sheets of regular paper: I then taped it together and roughly cut out. (No way am I cutting on all of those tiny lines! Just the general shape is enough!) I cut out a small white circle and glued on for the host. I have the "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" still at the bottom for balance, but it certainly could go on the top. The Eucharist quotes are printed on 8.5"x11" paper, so those rays are all 11" long. You could also print those on a larger scale if you were decorating a larger bulletin board. All together, this printable bulletin board sized in right at 3'x3.' It would look great on a door as well! While working on developing an understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation, my students and I created this easy foldable to record the most important info from our textbook. We started with a sheet of red paper, short sides folded to the middle, and then cut horizontally so that there are four flaps in front. To keep things simple, I had already created the "cover" with the four labels of areas we were going to summarize. Painted by Fr. Chauchetière in 1696. On October 21 KATERI TEKAKWITHA, the "Lily of the Mohawks", becomes the first Native American woman to become a Saint. She was born in 1656 at Ossernenon, which today is near Auriesville, New York, USA. Her father was a Mohawk chief and her mother was a Catholic Algonquin. Her baptismal name is Catherine, which in the Iroquois languages is Kateri. Her name can be translated as, "One who places things in order." When she was four smallpox attacked the village, taking the lives of her parents and baby brother, leaving St. Kateri an orphan. Although forever weakened, scarred, and partially blind, she survived. Since the brightness of the sun blinded her, she would feel her way around as she walked. She was adopted by her two aunts and her uncle, also a chief. After the smallpox outbreak subsided, the saint and her people abandoned their village and built a new settlement, called Caughnawaga, some five miles away on the north bank of the Mohawk River, which today is in Fonda, New York. Jan Oliver St. Kateri grew into a young woman with a sweet, shy personality. She helped her aunts work in the fields where they tended to the corn, beans, and squash, and gathered roots in the forest needed to prepare medicines and dyes. Despite her poor vision, she also became very skilled at bead work. Although the saint was not baptized as an infant, she had fond memories of her prayerful mother and of the stories of the Catholic faith that her mother shared with her in childhood. These remained indelibly impressed upon her soul and shaped her calling. She often went to the woods alone to speak to God and listen to Him in her heart and in the voice of nature. Deacon Lawrence Klimecki When she was eighteen, a Jesuit missionary came to Caughnawaga and established a chapel. Her uncle disliked the "Blackrobe" and his strange new religion, but tolerated the missionary's presence. St. Kateri remembered her mother's prayers, and was fascinated by the new stories she heard about Jesus Christ. She wanted to learn more about Him and to become a Christian. Nicholas Otero Father de Lamberville persuaded her uncle to allow St. Kateri to attend religious instructions. The following Easter, at the age of twenty, she was baptized. Her family did not accept her choice to embrace Christ, so after her baptism, she became the village outcast. Her family refused her food on Sundays because she wouldn't work. Children would taunt her and throw stones. She was threatened with torture or death if she did not renounce her religion. Because of increasing hostility from her people and because she wanted to devote her life to God, in July of 1677, St. Kateri left her village and fled more than 200 miles to the Catholic mission of St. Francis Xavier at Sault Saint-Louis, near Montreal. Here she received her First Holy Communion on Christmas Day, 1677. Dorothy M. Speiser Although not formally educated and unable to read and write, St. Kateri led a life of prayer and penance. She taught the young and helped those in the village who were poor or sick. She spoke words of kindness to everyone she encountered. Her favorite devotion was to fashion crosses out of sticks and place them throughout the woods. These crosses served as stations that reminded her to spend a moment in prayer. St. Kateri's motto became, "Who can tell me what is most pleasing to God that I may do it?" She spent much of her time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, kneeling in the cold chapel for hours. She loved the Rosary and carried it around her neck always. Dorothy M. Speiser On March 25, 1679, St. Kateri made a vow of perpetual virginity, devoting herself to Christ for the rest of her life. She hoped to start a convent for Native American sisters in Sault St. Louis but her spiritual director, Father Pierre Cholonec discouraged her. Her health, never good, was deteriorating rapidly due in part to the penances she inflicted on herself. Father Cholonec encouraged St. Kateri to take better care of herself but she laughed and continued with her "acts of love." Br. Robert Lentz, OFM The poor health which plagued her throughout her life led to her death in 1680 at the age of 24. Her last words were, "Jesus, I love You." Like the flower she was named for, the lily, her life was short and beautiful. Moments after dying, her scarred and disfigured face miraculously cleared and was made beautiful by God. This miracle was witnessed by two Jesuits and all the others able to fit into the room. Her feast is celebrated on July 14th in the United States.
