I have worked in a variety of nature programs, and a common element among all the quality programs I have participated in is a really good mud kitchen. A good mud kitchen becomes the hub for child led outdoor exploration, it transforms with the seasons, and supports many different types of play. Messy play, dramatic play, collaborative play and best of all a mud kitchen supports independent play! I wanted to share some of the best tips I have found for arranging a mud kitchen Tip One: Keep It Si

Each year, the Dramatic Play Centre is a class favourite! Even though school just started, I can already see how much interest there is at this centre. Students have been "cooking" food, setting the table, creating menus and using the telephone to call people and places. My in-laws gave me this phone a few years back - if you have a real one that you no longer use, add it to your Dramatic Centre. The students love pretending that it is real! We listen to the children and plan for our program based on their interests and wonders. Over the years, our Dramatic Centre has been a grocery store, bakery, doctor's office, ice cream parlor and so much more! Students can make an appointment by calling the doctor, order a cake by calling the bakery, etc. You can add this to your Dramatic Play Centre and see all of the possibilities. Last week I noticed that one student spent much of her time reading the phone numbers in our phone book and identifying the numbers. What a great way to practice number identification! I decided to update this old phone book. Click {here} if you would like to download a copy of the phone book with numbers already included. Click {here} for a download of a blank phone book for you to write in your own numbers. Have fun!
I'm going to tell you easy ways you can embed a ton of writing, reading, and math into their play at the Post Office Dramatic Play.
Thank you for your interest in my printables. When I made these printables I wanted to make them for both pretend play and a birthday party! Pretend Play - As a teacher I know how important playing pretend (dramatic play) is for a child's growth and development. And playing doctor is a great way for kids to learn, have fun, and not be so afraid of the doctor's office! When making this I thought they could learn through play and find where their eyes, nose, knees and toes are! My kids love to give each other a check-up! And I'm sure yours will too! Birthday Party - I thought it would be cute to have a play activity that follows along with a Doc Mcstuffins birthday party theme! The kids can play around with the chart and give each other a check-up on a clipboard just like at the doctor's office. You can either print out a bunch of copies for the kids to play around with (it's also cute for the kids to take home with them) OR you can just print out 1 or 2 and laminate them and the kids can erase them and use over and over again! Includes: 1. Doc McStuffins Patient Evaluation * For the Doc Eye Exam and Eye Chart check out my other listings. If you're looking for more Doc McStuffin printables please take a look at my other listings! Please ask any and all questions before purchasing. Thank you! These lovable decals turn any night stand, toybox, storage bin, cabinet or DIY project into a child-sized laundry center; complete with washing machine and dryer front-load windows (6 3/4"D), control panel decals (2 3/4"x 2 1/4") and control knobs (1"D). The Print A Toy Playhouse Decal Series Includes a complete variety of Kitchen appliances including stove bundle with oven, broiler, vintage looking gas range, Electric cooktop, refrigerator set with Freezer door shelf, fridge door shelves and drawers, and Ice water dispenser, dishwasher, sink, Gas or electric grill, Laundry kit with washing machine, clothes dryer and related knobs, bobs, buttons, dials keypads panels racks and accessories. Everything you need for a custom and unique little kitchenette. This Item is a Digital Download. Upon purchase, you will receive a link for the printable files to your email. You can also access the Resources from your Etsy Account. I suggest Avery sticker or label paper. You can also print on printable magnet pages or cardstock. When Printing, be sure and check your printer settings. features like "fit to page" can affect the final size of your illustration. You can seal with mod podge but I prefer laminating with clear shelf liner. Once the designs are printed and laminated, cut and paste or stick and play. The control knobs can be made to "work" by placing them on drawer pulls made to turn. If you will not be using working knobs you can place the knob decals directly onto the center of the control panel decals. For a green project place decals on cardboard boxes and use bottle caps for control knobs. The great thing about play kitchens is you can make one out of almost anything. Ready Made Sets like The Ikea Duktig Kitchen or Kidkraft can be customized easily with Print A Toy Decals. A DIY Kitchen is a Completely unique creation, commonly made from outdated end tables, upcycled hutches, repurposed TV entertainment centers and even TV trays or dining chairs and of course you can always build your own. If you are purchasing a cabinet to use; look for wall cabinets and attach legs or place them directly on the floor. Why? They come in 18 inches which is a good height for a child's workspace and you can get one that is 18 inches wide, then turn it on it's side so you have two drawers that open from top to bottom so you don't have to fuss with doors and hinges. you can also get a good match on a slightly taller cabinet for the fridge. Some Cheaper options are Iris Modular Furniture and Hodedah easy to assemble small cabinets. For a low cost or travel version, Items you likely already have on hand can be made into a play kitchen such as Plastic Totes, Shoeboxes, Rubbermaid Drawers, and Cardboard Boxes. Dramatic Play is educational. From the infant in daycare to the kindergarten classroom pretend play is vital for a preschooler's development. Fortunately a fun Center can be as easy to set up as placing Print A Toy decals on furniture items already in the school. Role Play is essential for childhood development. Kindergarten and Pre K Dramatic play Centers fill that need with practical life activities. This Center Idea focuses on domestic skills for preschool education. Children love play kitchens and every kid needs one for their Playroom or bedroom furniture. If you are a parent or grandparent looking for the perfect present for your little girl's birthday there is no better gift for her... or him. kitchens aren't just for girls and our gender neutral black and stainless design with red accents is just as perfect for a young boy. Today is going to be short, because I am gathering up pics and activities for our 100th Day of School that we are celebrating this week!! SO stay tuned to see what fun I have planned for my little nuggets. I just really would like to take this time to share my "philosophy" of teaching...no worries, I will try not to bore you...I am just passionate about early childhood and I am saddened that it seems as though kindergarten isn't kindergarten any more, in most cases. But on the bright side, I am proud that my district still believes that kinders are little and they still need that play time to learn to socialize, solve problems, make friends, reenact real life situations. What is so wrong with 5 year olds BEING 5 year olds??? Why are we forcing them to grow up so quickly and turning them into "test taking little robots"? Now, don't get me wrong, I realize the value of test taking skills and when it is time to work in my class, it's time to work....but when it's time to play I pride myself on providing meaningful and engaging activities that they will enjoy and remember for years to come! I have so many teacher friends on Instagram that I am thankful for! It really is my happy place to get on there and see what all of these inspiring teachers are doing in their classrooms. It is very fortunate that those kindergarten teachers that are not "allowed" dramatic play, or blocks only on inside recess days, are thinking outside of the box and creating fun and engaging activities for their students that are not boring old pencil paper tasks. I realize that it is often not the teachers choice, they are just doing what they are told to do. boo.... I am happy to say that in my room I provide dramatic play, blocks, woodworking, sensory table, light table, ipad, computers, library, writing, and 5 different tables with fine motor activities each and every day for 45 minutes in the afternoon! This is what my kids look forward to the most! When they walk in on Monday mornings they always look in three places to see what we are studying that week, the dramatic play, sensory table and library. This excites them and gets them ready to learn! It makes me happy to see their faces light up when they walk into the room and there is an igloo and ice fishing, or a 50's diner, an apple stand, military command center, a Valentine chocolate shop, and so many others I'd love to list! I enjoy planning it and making it happen as much as they enjoy playing in it! So, it's ok if these little ones play each and every day! They are learning so much more through their free play with each other than I could ever teach them!! I love kindergarten , my kids love kindergarten and it's awesome that we are not your average kindergarten. This is my dramatic play for my penguin unit. The Emperor penguin on the wall is the actual size so the children can measure themselves to see if they are taller than an emperor or not. I also have "ice fishing" which is just an alphabet fishing game that is also used during literacy centers and there is a "fire" outside of their igloo. One of my favorite dramatic play centers to set up is my Christmas one!! they are able to redecorate the tree, make cookies, sip "cocoa" by the fire and you can't see but there is also a baby bed on the right side that they LOVE to play with! I put 2 babies in there because I only allow 2 people in this center because of space and it reduces the amount of quarrels and they seem to play better when there is just 2. Close up of cookie baking. I LOVE this Melissa and Doug sliced Christmas cookie set I found at TJ Maxx for $15!!! Woohoo!! I love a good bargain! This is so much fun for the boys, but the girls really dig it as well!! It is my military command center. I have printed pics of maps of Afghanistan, Iraq, soldiers from WW1-modern day men AND women soldiers and even some of our four-legged furry soldiers! I have 2 grown boys, so lots of this army stuff came from their rooms and a friends son. I didn't purchase anything to create this center and it was a hit!! Wait, I take that back, I found army helmets and vests at my FAVORITE STORE IN THE WORLD......DOLLAR TREE!!!! Seriously, I have to go there every week or I have withdrawals!! It's a problem... :) I hope my post inspires you to let your little be just that...little.

Dramatic Play is not only a source of wonder and magic — it is good for cognitive development! Pretend play requires the ability to transform objects and actions symbolically; for example, pretending to be mommy or a doctor; pretending a bowl of nuts and leaves is oatmeal for Goldilocks. There is research that has shown […]
