This handwoven bag was made with the plant fibre chaguar, a type of bromeliad that grows in South America. It's a resistant and durable fibre. To obtain this material Wichi women first travel into the forest in small groups to harvest the chaguar, they then separate its fibres by hand. After they separate the fibre they spin, dye it with natural extracts -from roots, seeds and fruits- and knit it. All our chaguar bags and baskets have come from a remote area in Argentina - which is the semi-arid Chaco region - and handcrafted in a traditional way. Guarani people are native to Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Guarani culture is a culture shaped by it's spirituality, courage, and tradition. Our artisan partners live in the middle of the Argentinian jungle in a small community of 24 families. The creation of baskets is an art in their culture, and every basket could take up to 3 days. The process of creation started with the collection of the fibres from the jungle. Later, they clean the fibres and let it dry, until they have the right rigidity to start weaving. The Puna is a desert, high in altitude and dominated by Andes peaks. Due to these conditions ponchos & scarves have been used in this area for centuries.
