Lady Caroline Lamb (1785-1828) was daughter of the Earl of Bessborough and also wrote novels. She is better remembered for her dramatic nine months infatuation with the poet Lord Byron in 1812-13. She described him as 'Mad, bad and dangerous to know'. She was the wife of William Lamb (1779-1848) who later, as Viscount Melbourne, became British Prime Minister. Detail from an engraving by W.
