MMSA is having an APC swap so I dug out my cards and did a few. Made me remember why I like ATCs so much - the tightly defined design space. You have to be creative in 8.75 square inches - the area of a 2.5" x 3.5" ATC or a standard playing card. I've recently been paging thru Artist Trading Card Workshop by Bernie Berlin, trying to add a few more tricks to my usual collage/gelli/stencil/doodle repertoire. It's one of my go-to books because the techniques are mostly ones that use supplies I already have on hand and it's chock full of finished ATCs by a variety of artists so there's lots of idea-inducing eye candy. Anyway, I had the hots to do some gel medium transfers so I dug around for likely looking images of women or kids and slathered a few layers of gel medium on them. While they were drying, I collaged some gelli printed book page onto one of the cards and some white tissue paper layers onto a few others. Sprayed the still-wet tissue paper with inks, then with water and let two of them drip onto the third. Two got two layers of tissue but on the third I wadded it all up and made a highly textured surface. Took forever to dry but it looks cool. As I was rubbing the paper off the transfers I tore the eye area off the little girl, and said a dirty word. Then I realized it wasn't a disaster, it was a design opportunity! (put another layer of gel on the other two transfers cause one 'opporunity' a day is enough for me) I get impatient with the rubbing-paper-off part and always get too rough with them. They are very delicate, and I know that but I still do it pretty much every time. (what's the definition of 'stupidity' again?) The top two pics are the correctly done transfers and the third one is the one-eyed girl. Shoulda put her a one-eyed Jack card, huh? Didn't think of that till just now. Darn. Found some appropriate text in my folder of old book pages, drew a branch on the textured one, and wa-la - four APCs for the swap. They didn't all have to be green for the swap but that's my color family these days.

A crafting blog.
Hello there! Here's a little something I created for Carabelle Studio as their guest. I really, really like their stamps and they have ...
2015 Theme 8: Sprays Hello Everyone, I’m Nicole Maki, a mixed-media artist from Portland, Oregon, USA. I’m so pleased to be sharing my project with you. Paper Artsy is a continuous source of inspiration for me and it’s a real honor to be rubbing elbows with artists I admire so much. My tastes run towards outsider art (Basquiat, Matt Sesow, Jesse Reno), urban style and graffiti and bright neon colors. That said, I make a lot of gifts and try to tailor my creations to suit the receiver. This is a real benefit as it keeps my work fresh and saves me from getting into a stale routine of my own favorite colors and images. I was excited about the theme of ’sprays’ as they are a tremendous time saver when adding and mixing color and their serendipitous nature allows your project to progress from a place of freedom. Brush a thin layer of gesso onto muslin. Once dry, spray the cloth with blue, yellow, green and red spray ink. To help the colors blend, spritz lightly with water. For added saturation touch the tip of a fine paint brush loaded with paint to the wet spots on the cloth - I used Limelight and London Bus. Use the same sprays to color a few yards of seam binding. {The uk equivalent of USA muslin would be a lightweight cotton, with a tight weave such as bleached calico or sheeting} Once the fabric is completely dry, stamp images from Lynne Perrella Collection 034 using permanent ink. Layer the stamped muslin, batting and a backing piece of muslin and pin pieces of dyed ribbon into place. LPC034 Sew around the image affixing the layers of your quilt together. This can be done by hand or machine. Cut the tags and bookmarks apart and fray the edges with your fingernail if desired. Add accents with gold paint and attach beads to the images and/or the ends of the ribbons. Here is the bookmark in its new home. The tag looks great hanging from a bottle of wine, a perfect finishing touch for a gift. As a creative person I’ve often ran into the problem of expectations. When a friend’s birthday catches you unaware it’s not entirely acceptable for us crafty types to buy a card off the rack. People tend to happily anticipate a handmade treasure. But treasure-making takes time, something that can be in short supply. My remedy is to make several tags and bookmarks all at once. Then I can add one to a popular paperback or a bottle of wine and the recipient feels cherished. This technique easily translates into art quilts, mug rugs, cup cozies and cuffs. What I love about it is that it can scale from being as simple as the ones shown above or made more elaborate with the addition of embroidery, buttons, hand-painting, beading etc. Nicole. You can find me at my blog, www.madebynicole.blogspot.com and on Etsy, https://www.etsy.com/shop/PerkyNihilist Welcome Nicole, and thankyou for such a beautiful and useful project. As you say this technique would work on all sizes. I can see gorgeous cushions made in this way. You chose perfect images to work with as they suit the jewel tones of the sprays brilliantly. We would love you to join in with challenge #8: Sprays If you are inspired by any of our guests who blog with us over the fortnight, then please join in and link up your creativity HERE. All links go in the draw to win a voucher to spend on products of your choice from the PaperArtsy online store. The Sprays link will close 17:00 (London Time) Sunday, May 10th, winner will be announced 2 hours later at 19:00.

These prints are from a 1937 issue of L'Illustration Magazine. The artwork is by SERGE IVANOFF. He was commissioned by the magazine to do a series on 16th century and later dance steps. These would make fabulous party invitations or gift tags. 3 of them measure 2" x 4" and 2 measure 3" x 4". These are digital files.

I am happy to participate in this fun event organized by Michelle Reynolds who is the administrator of one of our Facebook groups, Gelli Printing Enthusiasts. I have been gelli printing ever since the Gelli Arts people released their wonderful gelli plates a couple of years ago. I have to say it has added SO much to my repertoire of skills to use in my mixed media and collage art. As a longtime mixed media artist, I sometimes feel like I need to inject something new and fresh into my work. Gelli plate printing was just the ticket for me and there's been no looking back. I've made bazillions of prints and even taught an online class this summer on making art journals with gelli prints and recycled materials. Today, I wanted to share with you some ideas of the range of things you can make with your gelli prints. The sky really is the limit and I would encourage you to use your imagination to its fullest here. So often, I hear from my students or followers that they just don't know what to do with all these prints they are making. Well, here are some ideas for you. Each photo has a caption underneath it describing how the piece was made. "Moon Goddess" was made with a recycled shipping tag that was gelli printed on both sides. I used a second print for the face and stamped images for her "hair." Funky fibers and some stick-on sparkly doodads complete the piece. "Full Moon On The 26" is an altered tag art doll. The tag was gelli printed on both sides and then I used salvaged beads and jewelry bits for the arms and legs, and other recycled items for the head. It's about 4.5" tall "A Breath Of Fresh Air" was created on a recycled CD for the base. I glued a gelli print onto the CD, then used other gelli prints to make the little person, along with stamped images and other collage elements. It measures 4.75". Artist Trading Cards - made with gelli prints for the backgrounds and then stamped images (Teesha Moore) and collage elements to finish them off. Bookmarks - you can wrap a gelli print around a piece of cardstock or cardboard and make funky bookmarks. Here I did that and added some fun little collage characters to complete each piece. Gelli Print Art Magnets - here I took gelli scraps and adhered them to sticky-backed sheet magnets and then collaged on top. Each is 2" X 3.5" Use your gelli scraps and your rubber stamps to make fun little collage elements for other projects. Use your gelli scraps and your rubber stampsto make fun little collage elements for other projects. Gellii prints glued to recycled CDs which will be used to make mixed media art magnets Use a template to draw out this bow pattern on the back of a gelli print, cut out and assemble for one-of-a-kind gift ornaments. There are so many more uses for those gelli prints but I'd better stop now so you can move along in your blog hop. I hope I've sparked your imagination as to just a couple of fun and creative things you too can try. Enjoy the rest of the hop! Here's the list of other participants in this fun blog hop: Wednesday 15th Oct Michelle Reynolds http://shellsinthebush.blogspot.com.au/ Thursday 16th Oct Joanna Grant http://joannabananadesignoriginals.blogspot.com Friday 17th Oct Jacques Williamos http://theelevatorpress.wordpress.com/ Saturday 18th Oct Linda Stokes http://www.lindastokes-textileartist.com/ Sunday 19th Oct Phillippa Montier http://pipart71.weebly.com Monday 20th Oct Lauri Crowe http://www.laurijeancrowe.com Tuesday 21st Oct Gail Schmidt http://www.shabbycottagestudio.net Wednesday 22nd Oct Tami Sturm Howse Www.thisandthatfromtami.blogspot.com
Wondering what to do with your gelli prints? I've been searching for ideas from other blogs and artists and Pinterest. 1. Start by buying some frames and framing them, the mat around the print finishes it off cleanly. 2. Add some meaningful words: 3. Bookmarks and Tags: Mine are sticking together which may be due to the humidity or the glossy paint so if anyone has any suggestions as how to get them not to stick I would love to hear from you. Transparent gesso??? Love the dressform shape, top right, I even bought some lace to glue on. :D 4. Collage - which was the original purpose that I bought the gelli plate for - so I could make my own papers to use in collage that weren't ones under copyright. Make a heap of textured backgrounds: a) Landscape scenes: Ripped/Torn: Scissors: Abstract/strips: Hundertwasser's Red Streets was the inspiration for these: I love Hundertwasser's use of colour and houses - he would say my houses and streets are too straight...and where are your lollipop trees??? Stayed tuned..... b) Cards: I started to print directly onto the cards but I was getting paint on the inside of the card due to messy hands so with the two below I glued the background onto the card then added the shapes and a little more detail is going to be added with paint pens. c) Altered Playing Cards These are a lot of work - each card needs to be sanded and gessoed before being glued/collaged and I need to decide if I'm going to put in one hinge ring in the top right corner or two in book style. Then I need to decide/know do I sell the whole deck at once for one price or break them down into suites. Well, I've had a lot of fun this week preparing for the Bickley Harvest Festival on 4th and 5th May where I'll be selling my paintings, pendants and prints and tags and cards at Myattsfield Vineyard. I'm still unsure of prices, even more so after a sales lady said I'd be lucky to get $2 for my prints as she has trouble getting people to pay $1.60 for scrapbooking paper! Confidence shattered after talking to her but she only saw pics from my iphone and I think she may have thought that I was asking her to sell them. After this experience I read an excellent blogpost by Leonie Dawson on How to work out pricing for what you sell. I'm still unsure of prices even though I've checked out Etsy - not a lot of gelli prints for sale (some 6in squares for $45, I was thinking a lot less for mine), whilst they don't take long to create there is a lot of other time that has gone into making them such as research, education and making and buying tools. If you have any idea of pricing then please let me know. I think we are all caught up - I really should post after each arty session but I just haven't had time lately. Thank you for reading, have a great weekend and stay safe. Love and hugs. Here are some more of my blogs about my gelli art. ETA: Do you love creating gelli prints? Want a place to discuss gelli printing? To show off your work? Share your ideas? Discuss the pros and cons of different paints/paper/plates/tools etc? Get some great ideas on what to do with the thousands of prints you have created? Then I would love you to join me at the Gelatin Printing Enthusiasts Facebook Group. This group is open to people who use a Gelli Arts Plate or who make their own gelatin plate.

Pocket Journal by Ingrid Vichova It is always an absolute delight to have Ingrid feature on the blog, and tonight you are in for a treat with her lusciously bright take with Alison's stamps. Not only is this a practical project, but it looks like so much fun too!! Here's a reminder of the new stamps designed by our new kid on the block, Alison Bomber! Over the next 3 nights we have {designer} and 2 of our talented bloggers presenting these fabulous new products to you in 3 different ways. All these new products are available from your PaperArtsy stockists now. See the list at the foot of this post. ~ Leandra Hi everyone, Ingrid here to show you Alison's newest stamps designed for PaperArtsy. I hope you will find some inspiration here today. Have you ever found yourself browsing Pinterest to find the right quote for your journaling or a card? I have, many times! So when Alison put together two whole sets of beautifully meaningful quotes, I got all excited. I don't have to search high and low for the right motto anymore. I can pick one and create around it or the other way around. Thanks, Alison! :) I am terribly indecisive when it comes to picking art supplies sometimes and I hate to 'procraftinate'. I was having a really hard time to pick just one so I decided to use them all! I think I only left one behind in the end as it didn't fit on the pocket, but I will find a right project for that one ;) For this post, I created a simple and colourful... Pocket Journal I knew I wanted to make one, but I wasn't sure exactly how. So I started exploring the idea further and, whilst rummaging through my supplies, came across a bunch of paper CD covers that I once received by mistake. I was supposed to receive the sturdy clear ones to use them for the pesky little dies that after a use or two start falling out of their original packaging. I hate throwing things away so I stashed it knowing they would be useful one day. Today is the day! I had a great messy fun using a whole bunch of the gorgeous Fresco Finish Chalk Paints on my Gelli Plate. I tried to keep it fairly simple but colourful. Using Gelli Plate is a great exercise for those who have a problem 'letting go' and overthinking it when creating. Fear not... You're not alone! I do have to laugh when my palette paper ends up looking better than what I am working on :D In case you wonder, I used a bunch of other stamps from Paperartsy, such as EEV05 by Ellen Vargo, ELB31, ELB34 by Lin Brown as well as the stencils by Kim Dellow. Once again, I tried to go with the flow and was not looking for perfection. I was going for a more distressed look. I wanted Alison's stamps to pop so I went for a white for contrast and a bit of sponging with dark brown ink did the trick. Gluing two of the pockets together and adding paint to them made them sturdy after all. It also meant that I have two pockets on each side of the pages. I might use them for smaller dies after all and be reminded of the beautiful quotes each time I list through them. Or I might store some die cuts in the pockets... Let me know your thoughts of what you would use it for in the comments below. I shall look forward to hearing from you. I also hope you can buy Alison's stamp sets to try them and create something for yourself. Stay creative!
