Concertina cards are fabulous display cards that have a concertinaed or fan-folded centre. They are constructed out of a few pieces of heavy paper folded inside a standard card blank and can be decorated for just about any occasion. TEMPLATE 1. Start with one sheet of heavy patterned paper measuring 12" x 6" and a coordinating piece measuring 8" x 4". 2. Place the 12" x 6" sheet of paper horizontally on your scoreboard and score at 2", 4", 6", 8" and 10". Concertina fold the paper, beginning with a valley fold, then a mountain fold, valley fold, mountain and finishing with a valley. 3. Use a craft knife and ruler or a trimmer, to remove an 8" x 3" panel from the centre of the concertinaed paper. Make the first horizontal cut between the first valley fold and the last valley fold, 11/2" from the top of the paper. Make the second horizontal cut between the first valley fold and the last valley fold, 11/2" from the bottom of the paper. Join the two horizontal cuts with two vertical cuts to remove the centre section. Refer to the template above for cutting measurements and placement. 4. Now you're going to cut little slots in each of the centre 2" panels (refer to the template). Starting with the bottom cuts, measure and mark 3" from the LHS of the page. Your mark should be in the centre of the second 2" panel (see the photo below). Use your craft knife to cut a 1/2" vertical slot (refer to the template). Repeat this process to cut slots in each of the other bottom panels. You should have cuts at 3", 5", 7" and 9". Now turn your paper around 180 degrees and repeat the process. You should now have a total of 8 slots cut in the top and bottom panels. 5. Place the 8" x 4" piece of heavy paper horizontally on your score board and score at 2", 4" and 6". Concertina fold the paper starting with a valley fold, then a mountain fold and ending with a valley fold. 6. The smaller piece of paper will now slot into the cuts you made in the larger piece of paper. It might take a bit of fiddling to get this right. 8. To decorate the card, I used an assortment of stamps, pieces of kraft card stock and some ink. You don't want to place anything too bulky on the inside of your card or it won't fold up properly. 9. Many card artists leave this card as is, but I like to use it as an insert inside a 5" x 6" card blank. 10. Decorate the front of your card blank as desired... I used a digital stamp, some ribbon and some of the paper off cuts from the insert. 11. Place some double sided tape on the reverse side of the outer two panels of your insert. 12. Line up the left hand edge of the insert with the left hand edge of the card blank, making sure the top and bottom also line up. Press firmly to secure. Repeat for the right hand side and you card is done! Stamps:

I’m back today and playing along with Can You Case It #121 color challenge and the Paper Players #296 sketch challenge. The CYCI challenge colors are so pretty and summery that I immediately thought of flowers. Who am I kidding, I usually think of flowers for most of my cards. I will have to try to go in some other directions in the future. Then when I saw the PP sketch, I thought… Continue reading

In my previous post, I reviewed Paper Folding Templates, by Trish Witkowski (Apple Press, 2012). The author expressed the desire for the templates to be used as "a springboard for creativity". Today's blogpost projects are based upon a couple of the wow-factor designs in the book. First up, a couple of Fold 'n' Twist Cards, based upon the Twist Fold card on page 151: The design is true to the template, whose design lines are similar to these: I simply dropped a design into the format. (The circle of text in the centre says "Happy Spring!", in case you were wondering.) After that straightforward use of the format, I decided to experiment and turn the idea into a flower shape: With inner petals No inner petals These cards are big fun in that they have a TARDIS-like effect - bigger on the inside (once they have been opened). Like so: To open, pull petals in opposite directions. Remove the seal first! Tah dah! The text reads " Birthday Wishes". Since I was pursuing a Springtime/flower theme, I then followed up with a hexagonal design. The book featured a folded card with a configuration similar to the Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt pattern: I played around with it, edited it down and tried different folding methods to come up with these: The basic pattern is like this: I have always been partial to swirls! Pinch the corners to make the triangles, fold them flat to the centre, spiralling them round. So there you go - start with a template, then experiment. Here are your downloadable printables (my original designs, not using the templates from the book, but using the ideas in the book as a starting point): TwistFoldSpring.pdf TwistFoldBirthdayFlowerPetal.pdf TwistFoldBirthdayFlower.pdf FoldingFlowerGetWell.pdf FoldingFlowerThinkingofYou.pdf Have fun making your surprise-factor cards. And enjoy experimenting with folded shapes.

For a list of the Alumni Blogs, see the end of the post. I created a mini book for my project this month. I have a little tutorial AND a "show-off" video for you! This adorable little mini album is 4 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide, with a 1 3/16" spine. I love the traditional colors of the Festive Holly Paper Collection, plus I just love cardinals! I also used a bit of paper from the Sparkling Poinsettia Paper Collection, which is an older collection, but has the same traditional color scheme. I created three page sets for this little mini. Each page set has an accordion fold section, a flip page, and a pocket page. It is a lot packed into such a small space! The pages are perfect for wallet-sized photos and small notes. The pages are also great for showcasing the beautiful images of the collections. If you want to see every page in the book, please check out the video below. TUTORIAL: Here is a little tutorial for making your own mini. This is a very quick-to-make project! Cut two pieces of heavy-weight chipboard to 4 1/2" x 3 1/2". Cut a piece for the spine to 4 1/2" x 1 1/2". (The spine ended up being a bit too wide, so you could make the spine a bit narrower.) Cut black cardstock to 6 1/2" x 10 1/2" and attach the chipboard to the center, making sure to have 1/8" of space between each cover and the spine. Angle the corners as shown. Attach double-sided tape to the flaps and secure. Create a hinge system using the accordion fold method. Cut black cardstock to 4" x 6". Score at 1", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 3", 3 1/2", 4", 4 1/2", 5". Fold on all score lines in a valley-mountain fold pattern. Turn the hinge system over and place adhesive between the 2nd, 5th, and 8th sections, as shown. Adhere the sections together to form the hinges. Place adhesive over the back of the hinge system. Attach the hinge system to the spine. Place double-sided tape to the front and back of each hinge. Create three page sets, one for each hinge. Each set will have a pocket, an accordion book, and a flip page. Create the pocket pages first, as they will attach to the hinges. Cut three piece of black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 6 1/4". Score at 3 1/8" on the long side. Fold on the score lines and burnish. Place double-sided tape at the bottom of the left page. Do not glue closed yet! Attach the open end of one of the pages to one of the hinges and secure. Then fold the page over the hinge and secure the bottom and the other side, forming a pocket. The pocket will accommodate one of the Graphic 45 ATC tag. Repeat the process with all three hinges. Create an accordion fold book for each page. Cut black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 9. Score on the long side at 1/2", 3 1/2", and 6". accordion fold and burnish the folds. Place double-sided adhesive on the 1/2" flap. Attach the accordion fold to the first pocket page by the 1/2" flap. Round the corners of the 2 1/2" wide section. Repeat for each pocket page/hinge in the mini. You will have three accordion fold sections in total. Burnish all score lines to make sure the pages fold easily. Create three flip pages. Cut black cardstock to 4" x 2 3/4". Score a 1/2" flap at the top of the panel. Round the bottom corners. Chose one panel of each page set to add the flip page. Simply adhere to the page by the 1/2" flap. Decorate the pages as desired. Once you have all of your pages attached to the book, decorate as desired. Thanks for hopping by! Hop on over to Emily Niehaus' Blog next. This is the third item I submitted as a Heartfelt Creations Semi-Finalist. My first official Design Team piece is coming up soon! Papers are from 29th Street Market by My Mind's Eye. I stamped the Flirty Fleurs image with colored markers and colored in with chalk. Check it out in my video below! To make the waterfall card, I followed this tutorial. SUPPLIES: STAMP(S) AND INK: Heartfelt Creations Flirty Fleurs. Heartfelt Creations Filler Leaves- unmounted. Colorbox. Versamark. PAPER: My Mind’e Eye 29th Street Market COLORING MEDIUM: Whispers markers by Sugarloaf. Shimmer chalk by Pebbles. TOOLS: Making Memories Tool Kit Deluxe EMBELLISHMENTS: Micron pen. Eyelets. Sewing machine. Twine. Tim Holtz. INSTRUCTIONS: Background: Purple cardstock is 4 1/8” x 5 6/8”. Ink the edges. Using the Filler Leaves stamp, stamp the edges in several places with Versamark ink. Use green chalk on stamped images. Ink the edges of the purple cardstock. Mat and glue to green cardstock. Waterfall: Use purple and green brush tip markers to ink the floral stamp. Stamp onto white cardstock. Color with chalk. Repeat. Use a trimmer to cut four 1 3/4” squares from the two stamped images. Use the Micron pen to draw a border on each piece. Glue the four stamped squares to 2” mats. Next, cut a 2x9” strip from polka dot paper. From one end, score at 2, 2.75, 3.5, and 4.25 inches. Starting at the 2” scored section, carefully glue one of the stamped squares to the solid side of the polka dot cardstock. And the remaining three pieces to the .75”x2” sections. Click HERE for video tutorial on stamping with markers and coloring with chalk. Center the waterfall piece on the card. Do NOT glue. Secure with tape or magnets. Cut a strip from the striped paper and position with magnets. Add a dot of glue on each end. Do NOT glue the entire strip. The piece with the pull on it should move freely under the strip. Glue the stamped section to the top of the strip. Add eyelets to each side. Pull out the pull tab and install an eyelet. Reinsert the pull tab under the striped strip. Machine stitch around the edge of the card. I used a Tim Holtz safety pin, twine, and a Tim Holtz charm to create a pull. Card base: Cut Cut a 9x6 inch piece of thick, white cardstock. I like textured CS for card bases. Score at 4.5. Attach the card front to the base.
I’ve brought together a few different products to create this pretty thank you card. One of the products that I’m completely smitten with lately is the Paper Lattice in the Annual Catalog. Any time Stampin’ Up comes out with anything similar to a lattice, I’m all in. Lattice creates such a pretty backdrop especially for floral images. I’ve paired it with a DSP “concrete” pattern from the Bloom Where You’re Planted collection and hand cut… Continue reading

Design - Little Happiness - Flowers'.

It's time to welcome today's Guest Designer, Nikki Acton of Addicted to Art! Nikki was the DT winner of the Winter Wishes challenge and was therefore invited to join us as a Guest Designer. Let's move on to hear from Nikki! Hi everyone I am Nikki from Addicted to Art – it is a pleasure to be asked to be a guest at Frilly and Funkie. I live in Hampshire, England. I am currently not working but my past careers have been in Sales and Marketing and the charity sector. I have a cat called Frankie who, despite being slightly strange, is great company. I am afraid she is a bit of a one person cat and is terribly unfriendly to visitors which can be a little embarrassing! I enjoy crafting with others and love attending workshops and crops with friends. I am also fairly active playing badminton, running and going to the gym. I have been crafting and blogging for just over a year. However I have done different forms of art over the years from watercolour painting (badly) to very contemporary, conceptual art (sound and video). Discovering the freedom of mixed media, journaling and card making has completely got me hooked now and I can’t imagine life without it. I suspect I was definitely more of a Funkie than a Frilly last year but I seem to have embraced the frilliness a little more recently and was pleased to see the theme for this challenge. I decided to make a little wall hanging and took a piece of hardboard measuring 20x10x0.5cm. I made sure I added a hanging device to the back and covered in gesso. I used paper artsy chalk paints on the wood and added some background stamping in archival. I stamped a wonderful lace stamp on some card and carefully ripped to fit my base and then added some ink. I took some mesh and coated with Gesso and then Distress Paint to give it a variegated colour. My flowers are made using Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die. I prepare my cardstock in advance by wetting and scrunching it up and leaving to dry. I then lightly ink over it – as the paper has been screwed up this highlights the lovely, subtle texture. Once complete I die cut various sizes and added a little more ink to the edges before creating my large flower and some smaller ones. Some of my leaves were created in a similar way using the Garden Greens die and the individual ones were pre made and just inked by me. I added some lace, some pearl string and seam binding. Finally, I stamped one of Tim Holtz ‘Simple Sayings’ and carefully curled the card for added dimension on the project. Wow Nikki, your project is stunning, thank you for sharing it with us ! I'm sure you'll agree that this has provided even more inspiration for the current challenge 'Winter Blooms'.

Instructions: Card size: 6 1/8 X 6 1/8” Card base is made with 2 pieces of Ivory card stock, 6 1/8” X 6 1/8 and 6 5/8 X 6 1/8”. Score the 6 5/8 side 1/2" so that it measures 6 1/8 X 6 1/8 after folding then glue 1/2” tab to back of card front. Cut a piece of decorative paper 6 X 6 (Treasured Memories was chosen for this card) and glue it to the card front. Stamp blossoms with Plum and sponge some with Magenta Hue and others with Pink Peony then die cut and run through machine in the mold to form flowers. Glue sets of 2 together then pierce centers and insert single medium stamen in each (flowers are very small). Using Plum Ink stamp skirt, corset, hat, and form then die cut and color with Copics. Die cut skirt base out of dark pink card stock. Stamp extra skirt (inside only) with Pink Peony on ivory card stock and die cut. Use the shimmer brush on the Pink Peony skirt, the flower on the skirt and the leaves. Leaves are stamped with Fern Green and colored with Leaf Green. Die cut a form out of a foam sheet and let it rest to settle back to its shape. Cut a form from chip board and another from Ivory card stock for extra strength since it extends off of the card. Stack colored form, foam, chip board then plain ivory form all together, gluing each layer. Glue corset to foam, hat to the top of form and dark pink shirt with colored skirt flowing down below form (under corset at the bottom). Glue lace to bottom of skirt. Stamp sentiment using Plum ink onto decorative paper and die cut. Die cut matching mat from ivory then glue to card centering vertically and extending off left side of card about 1”. Glue extra skirt stamped in Pink Peony to the right upper portion of card extending off card about and 1 1/4". Glue dress with form onto card off center to the right. Glue clusters of tiny flowers bottom left of skirt, top left of corset and the right side of the waist line [corset]. Add leaves and then add pink Prills like baby’s breath. Make a small bow from silk ivory 1/4" ribbon and glue to the top of the sentiment. Thanks for visiting! Robin Proverbs 31:10-12 Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. 11 Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
